Buying car parts from Dubai for Uganda
Updated
The quick answer
Uganda has no coast, so parts bought in Dubai reach Kampala through Mombasa or Dar es Salaam, or by air to Entebbe. A buyer sends the part, part number or VIN on WhatsApp, a person replies with a quote, and the buyer's own cargo agent collects in Dubai and arranges the onward route. Vehicle parts under heading 87.08 are in the 10% East African duty band, VAT is 18%, and used car tyres are banned.
Key facts
- Uganda is landlocked: cargo arrives through Mombasa on the Northern Corridor, through Dar es Salaam, or by air to Entebbe.
- The UAE reported USD 13.18 million of vehicle parts and accessories exported to Uganda in 2024, against USD 60.10 million to Kenya.
- Heading 87.08 vehicle parts are in the 10% East African duty band, with seat belts and airbags at 0%; batteries and new car tyres are at 25%.
- Uganda charges VAT at 18% on imported goods (US Commerce Department guide, published 18 December 2025).
- Used tyres for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles are banned from import.
- UNBS runs the pre-export verification programme; a Bureau Veritas datasheet from July 2023 lists used products among the goods it covers.
- Uganda ranks in Africa's top five destinations for Japanese used vehicles, despite having no coastline (Uchumi360, August 2026).
- We do not ship to Kampala: the buyer's cargo agent collects in Dubai and arranges the route.

Landlocked: three ways a part reaches Kampala
A part bought in Dubai cannot sail to Uganda directly. By sea it lands at Mombasa and travels the Northern Corridor, the road and rail route that links the port to Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, among others. Or it lands at Dar es Salaam, which the Tanzania Ports Authority lists as serving Uganda among seven landlocked countries. By air it flies to Entebbe.
The choice belongs to the buyer and the Dubai cargo agent. Mombasa suits an agent who already runs trucks to Kampala, and Dar es Salaam suits one who works through Tanzanian transporters. Either way the goods cross a border under customs transit, and the buyer's clearing agent in Uganda completes the entry. One Mombasa forwarder advertises transit bond options for cargo continuing to neighbouring countries, which is the customs guarantee behind goods that pass through one country on the way to another.
| Route | Entry point | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Sea to Mombasa, then the Northern Corridor | Mombasa, Kenya | Engines, gearboxes and consolidated orders |
| Sea to Dar es Salaam, then overland | Dar es Salaam, Tanzania | Buyers whose agent already works through Tanzania |
| Air to Entebbe | Entebbe International Airport | A few light parts that are needed quickly |
What Ugandan mechanics and traders look for
Uganda sits in Africa's top five destinations for Japanese used vehicles despite having no coastline, according to Uchumi360's August 2026 analysis of Japan's Ministry of Finance data for 2024. Toyota, Nissan and Subaru parts are among those sold at Kisekka, the Kampala market where mechanics go for parts, according to a Mekavo guide published in April 2026.
That guide also shows why a photograph matters. Kisekka sells Japanese surplus parts, new aftermarket parts, copies made in Taiwan and reconditioned units, and quality varies from stall to stall. Mechanics keep five or six trusted suppliers on speed dial. When you ask a Dubai source for a part, ask for the exact part, its number and the car it came from, so you know which of those four you are buying.
The UAE reported exporting USD 13.18 million of vehicle parts and accessories to Uganda in 2024, out of USD 45.54 million for the whole vehicle chapter, reported to UN Comtrade. That is a fraction of the Kenyan and Tanzanian lanes, so most Ugandan orders from Dubai are modest and are better placed to share a load with another buyer than to fill a container alone.
Duty, VAT and what Uganda bans
Uganda applies the same East African Community tariff as Kenya and Tanzania. Under the 2022 schedule, updated June 2025, parts under heading 87.08 are in the 10% band, with seat belts and airbags at 0%. Road-vehicle engines and alternators are also at 10%, and batteries and new car tyres at 25%. The US Commerce Department's Uganda guide, last published on 18 December 2025, gives VAT on imports as 18%.
Used tyres for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles are on the prohibited list that Uganda applies, and the same US guide records used motor vehicle tyres as banned. Other charges may apply on top of duty and VAT, so plan against your Ugandan clearing agent's assessment rather than a rule of thumb, and ask for it before the goods are collected in Dubai.
| Item | Rate or rule | Where the figure comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Import duty, heading 87.08 parts | 10%; seat belts and airbags 0% | East African Community tariff, 2022 version updated June 2025 |
| Import duty, batteries and new car tyres | 25% | East African Community tariff, same edition |
| VAT on imported goods | 18% | US Commerce Department guide, 18 December 2025 |
| Used tyres for cars and light commercial vehicles | Prohibited | East African prohibited list, as printed in a 2023 Bureau Veritas datasheet |
UNBS pre-export checks and what to confirm first
The Uganda National Bureau of Standards, UNBS, runs a pre-export verification of conformity programme. The US Commerce Department guide notes that some goods must pass it in the country of origin, and lists a certificate among the import documents. The most recent datasheet we could read, published by Bureau Veritas in July 2023, names automotive products and used products among the covered groups and excludes consignments of up to USD 2,000 FOB, except used motor vehicles.
Rules for used goods have moved since then, and UNBS has issued its own notices on used motor vehicles. We could not read UNBS's current notice for used spare parts, so do not treat the 2023 threshold as settled. Before any part is collected, ask your Ugandan clearing agent in writing whether a certificate is needed for that consignment and which firm issues it in the UAE.
Until that question is answered we treat a Ugandan order as one that may need paperwork. A person at Easy Auto will mark which items in the quote are used, so your agent can price the paperwork. We do not arrange certificates or shipments ourselves.
Air to Entebbe or sea through a neighbour
Air suits a small number of light, urgent parts. Dubai air-cargo agents publish cards for Entebbe from both Dubai airports, DXB and DWC, and one card read on 7 October 2026, dated July 2025, gives four to eight workdays. Agents price by weight or volume, whichever is higher, so a bulky light part such as a bumper can cost more to fly than it is worth.
Sea suits engines, gearboxes and shared orders. A Dubai forwarder's February 2026 guide gives Jebel Ali to Mombasa as 7 to 14 days port to port; from Mombasa the goods continue by road under transit to Uganda, and that second leg adds to the sea time. A buyer weighing Mombasa against Dar es Salaam should ask the agent for the whole journey to Kampala, not only the sea rate.
Descriptions that do not match the goods invite questions at the border. Ask for every item to be described the same way on the quote, the invoice and the packing list, with used parts marked as used, and give your clearing agent the set before the goods leave Dubai.
Small orders, shared loads and traders
Because Uganda's lane is small, a single part from Dubai pays the same fixed charges as a bigger parcel: an agent's weight band, duty, 18% VAT and clearing fees. The sensible way to cut them is to share. Two or three buyers can load together through one cargo agent, or a trader can order a mixed list and sell on. Easy Auto does not run the consolidation; your cargo agent does.
Traders buying for resale can ask for a price list and a minimum order through the wholesale route. Name the makes and the part families you sell, and the person quoting replies with what is available, which items are used and which are new aftermarket. A Kampala trader who has bought at Kisekka can compare that list against what the market already offers.
What to send on WhatsApp for a Uganda quote
Send the car's VIN or chassis number, the engine code, a photo of the old part and any number cast or printed on it. Say whether you want used or new aftermarket, how many you need, and whether the parts are for one vehicle or for resale. Name the cargo agent who will collect in Dubai, or say that you have not chosen one, and say whether the goods will go through Mombasa, Dar es Salaam or Entebbe.
The reply lists what is in UAE stock and what the Sharjah and Dubai yards can source, and marks the used items. How to pay is confirmed on WhatsApp before anything is collected. The quote is for the parts at the Dubai end; freight, duty, VAT and clearing are agreed between you, your agent and the authorities.
UAE parts shops that export
These shops are here because our record of each one lists exporting, sending parts outside the UAE, among what it offers. It is a record of what they told us or published, not a check that they send parts to Uganda today or of what is on the shelf, and none of them has paid to be here. Ask how the part reaches you, and who handles the export paperwork, before you pay.

Questions buyers ask
- How do car parts get from Dubai to Uganda?
- Send the part and the car on WhatsApp and a person replies with a quote. Your cargo agent in Dubai collects the parts and books freight to Mombasa or Dar es Salaam, or by air to Entebbe, and a clearing agent in Uganda completes customs. Easy Auto does not ship abroad or arrange the route.
- Is Mombasa or Dar es Salaam better for Uganda?
- Neither wins for every buyer. Mombasa is the port of the Northern Corridor, and Dar es Salaam serves Uganda among seven landlocked countries. Ask your Dubai agent to price both to Kampala, and choose by the whole journey, including transit paperwork, not by the sea rate alone.
- What duty and VAT does Uganda charge on car parts?
- Heading 87.08 vehicle parts, road-vehicle engines and alternators are in the 10% East African duty band, with seat belts and airbags at 0%; batteries and new car tyres are at 25%. VAT on imported goods is 18%. Your clearing agent's assessment gives the total and may include other charges.
- Does Uganda allow used tyres from Dubai?
- No. Used tyres for passenger cars and light commercial vehicles are prohibited imports, and a US Commerce Department guide published in December 2025 lists used motor vehicle tyres as banned. We do not quote used tyres for Uganda.
- Do I need a UNBS certificate for used parts from the UAE?
- It depends on the consignment, and the rules for used goods have changed since the July 2023 datasheet we could read. Ask your Ugandan clearing agent in writing before anything is collected, and tell the person quoting which items are used so the question can be answered item by item.
- Can you ship parts to Kampala for me?
- No. We do not ship abroad, set transit times or deliver to an address in Uganda. Your own cargo agent or forwarder collects in Dubai and carries the goods, and your Ugandan clearing agent handles the border. Freight and delivery terms are agreed between you and them.
- Is it worth buying one part from Dubai for Uganda?
- Sometimes, if the part is scarce or heavy and valuable, such as an engine control unit or a gearbox. A cheap wear part pays the same freight band, duty, VAT and clearing fees as a costly one. Parts bought together, or a load shared with another buyer, spread those fixed charges.
- Which parts do Ugandan buyers ask Dubai for?
- Toyota is the make our export enquiries mention most, and Uganda's Kisekka market stocks Toyota, Nissan and Subaru parts. Engines, gearboxes, suspension and driveline parts for those makes are the usual asks. Send the car and the part, and a person tells you what is in stock and what is used.
