Hiace parts from Dubai for export: matatu, kombi and taxi fleets

Updated

The quick answer

Fleet owners and parts shops in Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia can send a Hiace restock list on WhatsApp, with the engine code and the van's VIN, and a person prices every new line with its grade named. Your cargo agent collects the order in Dubai. We quote by the list, not for one or two pieces, and we give no delivery times.

Key facts

  • Toyota showed the H300 in Manila on 18 February 2019, after the H200 of August 2004; Kuwait and Egypt were still selling the H200 in 2020.
  • H200 engines named are the 1TR-FE 2.0 and 2TR-FE 2.7 petrols and the 2KD-FTV 2.5 and 1KD-FTV 3.0 diesels; Toyota's engine notice dates the 1GD Hiace to December 2017.
  • Toyota says the H300 has an all-new body on a specially revised platform, with the 1GD 2.8 diesel or the 7GR 3.5 petrol V6 at launch.
  • A snippet-level BestSellingCarsBlog summary gives the Hiace 12.9% of Kenya's 2024 new sales; Business Daily counted 5,353 Hiaces registered in the 22 months to October 2018.
  • A Harare street report of January 2019 priced kombi brake pads at USD 30 to 50 and oil filters at USD 10 to 20, paid in US dollars.
  • South Africa supplies 43% of Zimbabwe's recorded vehicle-part imports and 38% of Zambia's, where the same van is sold as the Quantum.
  • Kenya has barred used brake pads, filters and bearings since KEBS's 2019 instruction on 17 wear categories, so matatu operators there buy these new.

Which Hiace generation and engine does your van carry?

Wikipedia numbers the modern Hiace generations four to six. The fourth, the H100, ran from August 1989 to August 2004 with 5L, 1KZ-TE and 2L-T diesels and 1RZ and 1TR-FE petrols. The fifth, the H200, began in August 2004, and Wikipedia says it kept selling after its successor arrived, naming Kuwait, Egypt and Pakistan as of April 2020. The sixth, the H300, made its global debut in Manila on 18 February 2019.

The H200's engines are the ones fleets abroad ask about: the 2.0 litre 1TR-FE and 2.7 litre 2TR-FE petrols, and the 2.5 litre 2KD-FTV and 3.0 litre 1KD-FTV diesels, with the 1KD from 2006. Toyota's January 2024 engine notice adds the 1GD diesel in the Hiace from December 2017, sold to Japan, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The H300 launched with the 1GD 2.8 diesel or the 7GR 3.5 petrol V6, per Toyota, and Wikipedia adds the 2TR-FE.

Toyota's UAE page for the 2026 Hiace lists a 2.7 litre four-cylinder with a five-speed manual, a 3.5 litre V6 with a six-speed manual and a 2.8 litre diesel in its feature summary, and describes a van that seats 13. Toyota calls the H300 an all-new body on a specially revised platform, so a body, lamp or chassis quote for an H200 will not carry across, though the 2TR-FE and 1GD appear in both generations.

Who runs the Hiace as a matatu, kombi or taxi?

In Kenya the Hiace is the van behind many matatus. A BestSellingCarsBlog summary of 2024, seen only as a snippet, gives it 12.9% of new sales, and Business Daily's count from tax-authority data had 5,353 Hiaces registered over 22 months to October 2018. Wikipedia says over 70% of commuter trips in cities such as Nairobi use matatus, with each one required to be linked to one of more than 600 SACCOs, so the demand is repeat buying.

Uganda calls the minibus a taxi, and one import agent's Uganda guide puts the Hiace van first among popular imports, ahead of the Prado, the Mitsubishi Canter and the Isuzu Elf. The UAE ranked second among Uganda's declared vehicle-part suppliers in 2023, at 23%. A Kampala buying guide says mechanics there keep five or six trusted suppliers, and that quality varies from stall to stall.

In Zimbabwe the van is the kombi, and its parts are sold on Kaguvi Street in Harare. A Sunday Mail report of January 2019 named kombi and pirate-taxi operators among the street's buyers, and listed tyres, brake pads, shock absorbers, clutches, ball bearings, batteries, oil filters and service kits, priced and paid in US dollars. South Africa, where the same van is the Quantum, supplies 43% of Zimbabwe's recorded vehicle-part imports.

Zambia is the thinnest of the four in our sources. We expect Lusaka minibuses to buy Toyota and Isuzu diesel parts, and South Africa supplies 38% of Zambia's recorded vehicle-part imports against the UAE's 4.5%. That makes the Zambian trade a restock and range business, not a volume one.

Which new parts do minibus fleets order, and how much at once?

A minibus operator replaces the same parts again and again, so a Hiace order is a restock list. The Harare report is the most detailed local evidence we have: brake pads, shock absorbers, clutches, ball bearings, oil filters and service kits, with tyres, engine oil and batteries beside them. Wet batteries are dangerous goods and stay out of our quotes, so that line goes to your agent.

Engine and drivetrain overhaul is the second basket. Of the baskets we looked at for Kenya and Uganda, matatu parts together with Isuzu truck parts were the best defined for trade quantities, with injectors, turbos and clutches named. The Hiace's 2TR-FE, 1KD-FTV, 2KD-FTV and 1GD-FTV each have their own gasket, bearing, timing and pump lines. Send the engine code with the list, because one body carries petrol and diesel.

What does each grade cost against a kombi operator's budget?

The only local prices in our sources are old. The Harare report quoted kombi brake pads at USD 30 to 50, oil filters at USD 10 to 20 and tyres at USD 40 to 79 in 2019, and a trader interviewed there said cheap counterfeits do not last. Those figures fix the operator's budget, not today's price, and they show why a quote that names three grades helps: Genuine, OE-brand and Quality aftermarket.

No Hiace number was in our Dubai price check of 3 November 2026. On two other Toyota numbers, OE-brand came in at about 0.67 of genuine, quality aftermarket at 0.54 to 0.58 and budget at 0.15 to 0.23, all with VAT at Dubai counters. Expect that shape on Hiace lines, not those figures. One way to split a list is genuine where a failure stops the van and branded aftermarket on the repeat-wear lines.

Fake parts are a documented risk where these vans run. Zimbabwe's state fleet agency warned in August 2025 about fake brake fluid and told buyers to use members of the motor industry association, and Kenyan studies rank spare parts among the most counterfeited goods. Ask for the distributor's invoice on any genuine filter, because oil filters were AED 2.81 million of the AED 7.46 million of fakes Al-Futtaim reported seizing in 2024.

Do H200, H300 and Gulf vans need different parts?

Yes for body and chassis, less so for engines. Toyota's all-new H300 body means panels, lamps, bumpers and the chassis lines will differ from the H200's, while the 2TR-FE and 1GD-FTV appear in both. Within the H200 the 1GD joined the KD diesels from December 2017, so a 2016 van and a 2019 van can sit in one generation and carry different engine parts.

Gulf vans are left-hand drive, and Toyota UAE's page offers the 2.7 petrol and the 3.5 V6, while the vans in Kenya, Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia are right-hand drive and the markets use petrol 2TR and diesel KD and GD engines. Engine parts follow the engine code, not the van's market, while steering and dashboard parts follow the drive side.

Aftermarket makers build brake, suspension, filter and engine parts for right-hand-drive vans too, so those lines are quoted by part number. A steering rack or a dashboard belongs to one side of the van, and is quoted by part number alone after a person has matched the number to your VIN.

What should you send, and check, before paying for Hiace parts?

Send the VIN or chassis plate, the engine code, the roof and wheelbase (standard or long, normal or high roof, van, commuter or tourism body), the month and year of build, the drive side and the number or a photograph of each old part. One list for the whole fleet is easier to quote together than separate messages for each van.

Before paying, check that the van on the quote is the generation you drive, because an H200 line and an H300 line can share a name and little else. Ask for each line's grade and brand. If the goods are going to Zimbabwe, ask your clearing agent whether the CBCA general-goods route applies to the consignment; the agent books it, not us.

Questions buyers ask

Which engines does the Toyota Hiace have?
The H200 van carries the 1TR-FE 2.0 and 2TR-FE 2.7 petrols and the 2KD-FTV 2.5, 1KD-FTV 3.0 and later 1GD-FTV 2.8 diesels. The H300 launched with the 1GD diesel or the 7GR 3.5 V6 petrol, and the 2TR-FE is listed too. The code on the engine plate settles it, not the van's year.
Is the Hiace the same van as the Toyota Quantum?
The Quantum is the name Toyota uses in South Africa for the Hiace family, assembled in Durban, with the H200 Quantum introduced in 2005. That makes South Africa's parts trade a neighbour for Zimbabwe and Zambia buyers. Send the VIN, because the same name can sit over different engines and bodies.
Why do matatu owners in Kenya order new brake pads?
Used pads are on the list of 17 wear categories that KEBS told its pre-shipment inspectors in 2019 not to pass, with filters, bearings and clutch plates, and we found no revision since. A matatu operator in Nairobi or Mombasa who wants pads from Dubai therefore buys them new, with the grade and brand stated.
Does the Hiace 2TR-FE use the same engine parts as a Hilux 2TR-FE?
The engine code is shared, and Wikipedia lists the 2TR-FE in the Hilux, the Prado and both Hiace generations. Internal parts such as gaskets, pistons and bearings follow the engine, but mounts, sensors and ancillaries differ by vehicle. Send the old part's number and your VIN, and a person checks which number applies.
Do Gulf Hiace parts fit a right-hand-drive van in Kenya?
Engine, brake, suspension and filter parts follow the part number and fit by it. Steering racks, dashboards and other side-specific parts do not cross between left- and right-hand-drive vans without a check. New aftermarket parts exist for right-hand-drive models, so a person quotes by number against your VIN.
Can you deliver Hiace parts to Nairobi, Kampala, Harare or Lusaka?
No. A cargo agent or forwarder of your choosing collects in Dubai, files the export papers and books the sea or air leg, and a clearing agent at your border handles customs. We do not ship abroad and set no delivery dates. Collection details are agreed with a person on WhatsApp.
Is one set of Hiace pads worth ordering?
We quote by the list at trade quantities, so a fleet owner or parts shop should send the whole restock list: pads, filters, shock absorbers, clutch kits and bearings for several vans. A person tells you on WhatsApp whether the list is the right size. One or two pieces are not what we quote for export.
Do you sell used Hiace engines or half-cut vans?
No. Everything we export is new, whether genuine, OE-brand or a named aftermarket brand. A Hiace engine job is quoted as new parts, such as gasket sets, bearings, pumps and injector parts, matched to the engine code. Used or rebuilt engines, gearboxes and half-cuts are not part of our offer, and neither are whole vans.
