Buying car parts from Dubai for Malawi
Updated
The quick answer
Malawi's tariff lists 30% customs duty on most car-part lines and nil duty on engines, with import VAT of 17.5% since 10 January 2026. An importer registers with MRA for a taxpayer number, and MRA licenses the clearing agents who file declarations. Malawi has no seaport, so parts arrive overland from Dar es Salaam, Nacala or Beira. Message the part, its number or the VIN on WhatsApp for a quote from a person; an agent you appoint collects in Dubai.
Key facts
- MRA's tariff order, HS 2022 version for 2023 to 2024, lists 30% in its standard duty column for every line of heading 87.08.
- Engines for cars and pickups are listed free of duty; starter motors, generators, spark plugs, oil filters and lamps sit at 15%.
- MRA's public notice sets VAT on imported goods at 17.5%, effective 10 January 2026.
- Commercial imports also bear advance income tax, which MRA treats as creditable and not as a final tax.
- Importers register with MRA for a TPIN, and MRA licenses the customs clearing agents who file declarations.
- MRA's restricted-goods brochure names grains, oilseeds, cement and similar goods, and does not name vehicle parts.
- Nacala is served by a 931 km railway into Malawi; Beira and Dar es Salaam also serve the country, and the US Commerce Department notes long border delays.
- Easy Auto does not carry goods to Malawi; an agent of your choosing collects in Dubai.

What Malawi charges on car parts
MRA publishes the Customs and Excise (Tariffs) Order on its downloads page, and the HS 2022 version for 2023 to 2024 is the latest full edition listed there. In its standard duty column every line of heading 87.08, parts and accessories of motor vehicles, shows 30%. A second column shows 25%, and the order says it applies to goods grown, made or produced in Commonwealth, Lome convention and GATT contracting-party countries, so your agent confirms which column fits the part's country of manufacture.
Engines are the exception: those of a kind used in vehicles are listed free of duty in both columns. MRA's public notice says the rate of VAT on imported goods is 17.5%, effective 10 January 2026, which supersedes the 16.5% still printed in the tariff order's VAT column. Commercial importers also pay advance income tax at the border, which MRA describes as not a final tax, and a refund can follow if the total paid exceeds the tax due on profits.
| Part | Tariff heading | Standard column | Second column |

| Oil and petrol filters | 8421.23 | 15% | 10% |

Registering, clearing and what Malawi restricts
The US Commerce Department's country guide, updated on 8 June 2026, says importers register with the Malawi Revenue Authority to obtain a taxpayer identification number, and that goods are declared on MRA's customs declaration form, with a separate declaration of value. MRA's downloads page carries notices on registering and renewing the licences of customs clearing agents, which points to declarations being filed through a licensed agent.
Malawi runs an import and export licensing system, but MRA's restricted-goods brochure, dated June 2022, lists grains, oilseeds, potatoes, tomatoes, salt, cement, cooking oil and similar goods, and the same US guide's list of second-hand restrictions names clothing, kitchen utensils and refrigerators. Neither names vehicle parts. That is a reading of two published lists, not a guarantee, so your agent still checks the tariff line of each part.
How parts get from Dubai to Malawi
Freight is outside what Easy Auto does. The desk finds the part in the UAE, from stock or from a Sharjah or Dubai yard or market; the cargo agent or forwarder you appoint collects it in Dubai and books the onward leg. Malawi has no seaport, so a neighbour's port and a long overland leg are unavoidable.
Three gateways serve it. Nacala in Mozambique is the nearest port to Malawi, with a 931 km railway into the country, and one trucking operator gives about 912 km from Nacala to Lilongwe, two to three days by road. Beira is the terminus of the Sena and Machipanda railways, which carry products from Malawi and Zimbabwe. Dar es Salaam is the third: the Malawi Cargo Centre, set up by the Malawi government, runs dry ports there and at Mbeya, and goods go by TAZARA rail to Mbeya and by truck over the Kyela border.
The US guide calls lengthy border-crossing delays one of the biggest hurdles to doing business in Malawi, with new one-stop border posts planned. A courier is dear: DHL Express's 2026 UAE guide lists 12 kg to Malawi (zone 8) at AED 3,792.16 before fuel surcharge, duty and tax, so only small, valuable parts suit air. No delivery time is offered.
How big the Malawian market is and what suits it
Malawi is small beside Zambia and Zimbabwe. TradingEconomics's UN Comtrade page gives its 2024 vehicle imports from Japan as more than US$80 million, and UAE customs data recorded US$3.10 million of vehicle parts and accessories exported to Malawi in 2024, against US$9.88 million for Zambia and US$41.58 million for Zimbabwe. Malawi's own return shows US$1.38 million arriving from the UAE. The two records differ, but both are small.
That is why Malawi is covered here in practical terms rather than at length. Malawi also buys its vehicles from Japan, and it drives on the left. The lamp rule applies again: a headlamp from a right-hand-traffic UAE car needs a marking for left-hand traffic or for both, because a dipped beam is made for one direction only.
Making a small order worth sending
A single part carries the whole border, clearing and transit cost on its own. Two things help: buy several parts in one go, and ask your agent whether a container to Lilongwe or Blantyre has space. Some agents combine small orders for several buyers into one load, and your agent is the one who can say whether that is possible on your dates.
Batteries of either kind, airbags, gas-filled struts, fluids and undrained engines are not something we can arrange for Malawi, because they require licensed dangerous-goods carriage, which we do not offer. Engines are the best-priced item at the border, since duty on them is nil, but they are heavy and go by sea.
Traders and repeat orders
A Blantyre or Lilongwe workshop that orders often can ask for a price list in place of single parts. The wholesale page sets out minimum quantities and mixed-supplier orders, and a repeat buyer can keep the same clearing agent and the same Dubai agent from one order to the next.
What to send on WhatsApp
Give the make, model, year and VIN, a photo of the part and any number on it, and say whether you want new, aftermarket or used. Add your town, your Malawian clearing agent and whether a Dubai agent is already booked. A person replies with a quote and confirms how to pay in the same chat.
UAE parts shops that export
These shops are here because our record of each one lists exporting, sending parts outside the UAE, among what it offers. It is a record of what they told us or published, not a check that they send parts to Malawi today or of what is on the shelf, and none of them has paid to be here. Ask how the part reaches you, and who handles the export paperwork, before you pay.

Questions buyers ask
- How much duty does Malawi charge on car parts?
- MRA's tariff order for 2023 to 2024 lists 30% in its standard column and 25% in its second column on every line of heading 87.08, and no duty on engines for vehicles. Alternators, starters, spark plugs, filters and lamps are 15% standard. Import VAT is 17.5% from 10 January 2026.
- What is the VAT on imported goods in Malawi?
- MRA's public notice says the rate of value added tax on imported goods is 17.5%, effective 10 January 2026. The tariff order from 2023 to 2024 still prints 16.5%, so use the newer figure and have your clearing agent confirm what is charged at the border.
- Must a licensed agent clear car parts into Malawi?
- MRA licenses customs clearing agents and publishes notices on registering and renewing them, which points to declarations being filed through an agent. You also need an MRA taxpayer number. Whether an owner may clear a small load personally is a question for MRA or your agent.
- How do parts reach Malawi from Dubai?
- Your agent ships by sea to Nacala, Beira or Dar es Salaam, then rail or road into Malawi. Nacala has a 931 km railway into the country. Sailing times vary by service, border delays are common, and we give no delivery times for any leg after Dubai.
- Is a used engine from Dubai allowed into Malawi?
- The MRA and US Commerce Department material we read has no ban on used engines or gearboxes. Engines are listed free of duty in the tariff order, gearbox lines sit at 30%, and VAT is added. Confirm with your clearing agent, because MRA changes rates by order.
- Will you deliver the parts to my address in Malawi?
- No. Easy Auto is a UAE parts directory with a WhatsApp parts desk, not a carrier. The agent you appoint takes the parts from Dubai and clears them into Malawi, and no delivery estimate comes with that leg.
- Does Malawi charge anything besides duty and VAT on commercial imports?
- Yes, advance income tax is withheld at entry on commercial imports. MRA calls it not a final tax, refundable if it exceeds the tax due on profits. The rate has differed between MRA documents: 3% of value in an April 2022 notice, and 10% in the tariff order's advance income tax column for 2023 to 2024. Ask your agent for today's figure.
