1NZ-FE and 2NZ-FE engine parts from Dubai in trade lots
Updated
The quick answer
We quote spark plugs, ignition coils, gasket sets, timing chains and VVT-i parts for Toyota's small NZ petrol engines: the 1NZ-FE of 1.5 litres and the 2NZ-FE of 1.3. They sit in the Vitz and Yaris, Corolla, Probox, Fielder and Belta. A trade list is counted per engine, with four of each cylinder part. Your cargo agent collects in Dubai, and a person confirms how to pay on WhatsApp.
Key facts
- Wikipedia gives the 1NZ-FE 1,497 cc and the 2NZ-FE 1,298 cc; both are chain-driven four-cylinder engines with the same 75 mm bore and different strokes.
- The two engines look identical; Wikipedia says the 2NZ-FE is marked on its intake manifold, and in leaded-fuel regions it came without VVT-i.
- A 2003 revision sold in Japan only gave the 1NZ-FE roller rocker arms, hydraulic lash adjusters, EGR and a hotter thermostat, so parts differ by revision.
- Business Daily, from KRA data, reported Probox 14,188, Corolla 10,786 and Vitz 5,468 registrations in Kenya in the 22 months to October 2018.
- Kenyan press reports in 2019 named 17 kinds of used wear part, spark plugs among them, that must be new; KEBS said other used spares remained permitted.
- In our own enquiries Ghanaian buyers named the 1NZ-FE twice and the 2NZ-FE once, alongside two other small Toyota codes.
- The Aqua's hybrid engine, the 1NZ-FXE, shares the 1NZ-FE's bore and stroke but has its own code and sits outside this page.

How do you tell a 1NZ-FE from a 2NZ-FE, and what changed?
Wikipedia gives the 1NZ-FE 1,497 cc, with a 75 mm bore and an 84.7 mm stroke, and the 2NZ-FE 1,298 cc, with the same bore and a 73.5 mm stroke. Both are four-cylinder double overhead cam engines with four valves a cylinder and a timing chain. They look identical from outside, and Wikipedia says a 2NZ-FE is marked on its intake manifold, so that is where a buyer abroad should look before writing a list.
Revisions matter more than the badge. Wikipedia says a 2003 revision sold in Japan only gave the 1NZ-FE roller rocker arms, hydraulic lash adjusters, a narrower valve angle, EGR and a thermostat opening at 88 degrees instead of 82, and that a different plastic engine cover identifies it. A 2012 update raised the compression ratio from 10.5 to 11.0. Regions that sold leaded petrol got a 2NZ-FE without VVT-i at 81 PS. VVT parts therefore apply only to engines that have VVT-i.
| Engine | Size | Bore and stroke | Output | Versions to check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1NZ-FE | 1,497 cc | 75 mm and 84.7 mm | 98 to 110 PS | VVT-i on the intake cam; Japan-only 2003 revision; compression 11.0 after 2012 |
| 2NZ-FE | 1,298 cc | 75 mm and 73.5 mm | 86 to 88 PS | Marked on the intake manifold; a 81 PS version without VVT-i for leaded-fuel regions |
Which cars carry them, and which of those does Dubai stock match?
Wikipedia lists the 1NZ-FE in a long run of Toyota small cars: the Vitz and Yaris, the Corolla, the Corolla Axio and Fielder, the Probox and Succeed, the Belta, the Platz, the Allion and Premio and the Sienta, among others. The 2NZ-FE shares many of the same bodies, including the Vitz, Probox, Belta and Corolla. The table follows Wikipedia's chassis codes, which a buyer can read from the plate, and its years.
The overlap with Gulf stock is narrower than the list suggests. Wikipedia names the Middle East among the markets for the 2NZ-FE in the 2010 to 2020 Yaris and the 2000 to 2008 Corolla. The Probox and Fielder, built for Japan, are rare in the Gulf, but the engine's parts belong to the engine and not to the body. We have not confirmed that every Gulf part matches a Japan-only body, so a person checks each line by number.

Which countries buy small-engine parts, and what do they ask for?
Kenya's roads carry many of these engines. Business Daily, working from Kenya Revenue Authority data, reported on 13 December 2018 that Toyota took 57.3% of the vehicles registered in the 22 months to October 2018, led by the Probox with 14,188, the Corolla with 10,786 and the Vitz with 5,468. Kenyan press reports in 2019 named 17 kinds of used wear part, spark plugs among them, that must be new, and KEBS said other used spares remained permitted, so plugs are a natural new-parts line there.
Ghana is where these codes came up in our own enquiries: the 1NZ-FE twice, the 2NZ-FE once and two other small Toyota codes. Citi Newsroom reported in 2023 that Abossey Okai holds more than 15,000 shops, that the Ghana Standards Authority had no written policy specific to vehicle spare parts, and that 26 national standards for vehicle parts and systems were approved in 2019. The High Street Business listed brake pads, filters, belts, headlamps and clutch kits as Ghana's fast movers in a single unsourced article of 17 May 2026.
Zimbabwe's most visible cars are the Honda Fit and the Toyota Aqua, news reports seen as search summaries say, with the Vitz, Passo and Nissan Note named as the dominant fuel-saving models. Of those, only the Vitz appears in the NZ tables above. Zimbabwe's government fleet agency CMED warned in August 2025, the Herald reported on 6 August, that fake vehicle parts and maintenance products were circulating, and it advised buying from Motor Industry Association members.
Ethiopia is where Toyota dominates the road. Addis Fortune put Toyota at about 90% of Ethiopian cars in 2021, in a summary we saw without reading the full article. A person screens every Ethiopian buyer before we quote, and your own cargo agent collects in Dubai, as for any other buyer. The country's own page covers what applies there.
What does a trade lot of small-engine parts look like?
A trade list for these engines is counted per engine, not per box. Both are four-cylinder engines, so each engine needs four spark plugs, and four ignition coils where one coil serves each cylinder, which a buyer confirms from the old coil's number. A list for twenty-five engines is a hundred plugs, twenty-five head gaskets and twenty-five timing sets. This is the shape of order we quote; a single plug is not.
The VVT-i parts are the line where lists go wrong. An oil control valve or actuator applies only to an engine that has VVT-i, and the 2NZ-FE sold in leaded-fuel regions has none. Valve train lines also depend on the revision, because the Japan-only 2003 1NZ-FE has roller rocker arms and hydraulic lash adjusters that earlier engines do not. When in doubt, write the model code and year beside each engine on the list.
| Line | One engine | Twenty-five engines |
|---|---|---|
| Spark plugs | 4 | 100 |
| Ignition coils, one per cylinder | 4, confirmed from the old coil's number | 100 |
| Head gasket | 1 | 25 |
| Valve cover gasket | 1 | 25 |
| Timing chain set with tensioner and guides | 1 | 25 |
| VVT-i oil control valve, VVT-i engines only | 1 | 25 if every engine has VVT-i |
How do genuine, OE-brand and aftermarket compare on small parts?
We measured no price for these engines on 3 November 2026. Small parts behave differently from a pump: a plug costs little, so the total is driven by the count, and a few dirhams of difference on one plug becomes real money across a hundred. Genuine is Toyota-branded stock; OE-brand is a maker who supplies Toyota, with NGK and Denso the usual names for ignition parts; quality aftermarket sits below them. Each line on a quote names its grade and brand.
Where the buyer's own country sets a rule, the grade follows it. Kenya's reported list of 17 kinds of used wear part that must be new includes spark plugs, so a Kenyan list asks for new plugs whatever the grade. Zimbabwe's CMED warning of August 2025 pushes buyers toward named brands from known sources. Wherever the rule or the warning applies, ask for a brand, a number and a photograph before paying.
What to send for a 1NZ-FE or 2NZ-FE quote
Send the engine size first, 1.5 or 1.3 litres, and the code on the intake manifold. Add the chassis code from the plate, such as NCP91 or NZE141, and the year. Say whether the engine has VVT-i if you know, and whether the engine cover looks like the Japan-only 2003 revision's plastic one. Photograph the number on any coil, valve or chain you want matched.
Then write the list per engine with the counts, for example plugs by four and head gaskets by one, and the number of engines. A person replies on WhatsApp with each line priced, its grade and brand named and a flag on any line checked only by engine code. How to pay is confirmed in that chat. Mixed lists across the Vitz, Corolla and Probox are fine, as long as each engine is labelled.

Questions buyers ask
- How do I tell a 1NZ-FE from a 2NZ-FE?
- They look the same from outside, and Wikipedia says the 2NZ-FE is marked on its intake manifold. The 1NZ-FE is 1,497 cc and the 2NZ-FE 1,298 cc, with the same 75 mm bore and strokes of 84.7 and 73.5 mm. If the marking is unreadable, the chassis code and year usually settle it.
- Do all 2NZ-FE engines have VVT-i?
- No. Wikipedia says regions that sold leaded petrol received a 2NZ-FE without VVT-i, rated at 81 PS. VVT-i oil control valves and actuators apply only to engines that have the system, so a list should say which version each engine is before a person quotes any VVT line.
- Does the 1NZ-FE use a timing chain or a belt?
- A chain. Wikipedia's infobox for the NZ family lists a timing chain, so there is no timing belt interval. The wear parts are the chain, tensioner and guides, which we quote as one set per engine after a person has checked the code and the revision.
- Can I get Probox and Fielder engine parts from Dubai?
- Engine parts, yes, by engine code and part number; body parts for cars built only for Japan, rarely. Wikipedia lists both models with the 1NZ-FE. We have not confirmed that Gulf parts match Japan-only bodies line for line, so a person checks every line by number and says so on the quote.
- Is the engine in the Toyota Aqua a 1NZ-FE?
- The Aqua's hybrid engine is a 1NZ-FXE, a separate code with the same bore and stroke as the 1NZ-FE according to Wikipedia. It is outside this page, and parts for it are quoted by engine number only. Send the code from the plate and a person tells you what can be found.
- How many spark plugs do I order for twenty-five engines?
- One hundred, because both NZ engines are four-cylinder. Write the list per engine and multiply it. Ignition coils are also four an engine where one coil serves each cylinder, which you confirm from the old coil's number before ordering.
- Can an Ethiopian buyer ask for a quote?
- Yes. A person screens each Ethiopian buyer before we quote, and your own cargo agent collects in Dubai. Send the engine code, the chassis code and the list per engine on WhatsApp, as you would for any other country. The Ethiopia page covers the rules that apply there.
