Buying car parts from Dubai for Zambia
Updated
The quick answer
Zambia's customs tariff lists 15% duty on most car-part lines and no duty on engines, with 16% VAT, collected by ZRA. A clearing agent is required once a consignment passes US$2,000 CIF. Zambia has no seaport, so parts arrive overland from Dar es Salaam, Durban or Beira. Message the part, its number or the VIN on WhatsApp; a person replies with a quote, and the cargo agent or forwarder you appoint collects in Dubai.

- A consignment above US$2,000 CIF is declared electronically by a clearing agent; one between US$1,000 and US$2,000 does not need an agent.
- ZCSA enforces 102 compulsory standards; its published list names new and retreaded tyres, lead-acid batteries and engine oils among motor-related products.
- One trucking operator gives about 2,000 km from Dar es Salaam to Lusaka, and about 1,200 km from Beira to Lusaka.

What Zambia charges on car parts
ZRA publishes its Customs and Excise Tariff with a January 2026 update, and the picture for car parts is simple. Every line of heading 87.08, parts and accessories of motor vehicles, carries 15% duty, and engines of a kind used in vehicles are listed free of duty. ZRA expresses import values as CIF, meaning cost, insurance and freight, and duty is a percentage of the declared value.
VAT comes on top. ZRA states that standard-rated supplies attract VAT at the prescribed standard rate of 16%, and the tariff's VAT column shows S, standard rated, against these parts lines. ZRA's own disclaimer says that where the tariff and the legal text differ the legal text prevails, so ask your clearing agent to confirm the line for the exact part before you order.
| Part | Tariff heading | Duty |
|---|---|---|
| Engines for cars and pickups, petrol or diesel | 8407.34 and 8408.20 | Free |
| Every other heading 87.08 line, such as gearboxes, brakes, suspension, radiators, clutches and steering | 8708 | 15% |
| Alternator or starter motor | 8511.40 and 8511.50 | 15% |
| Spark plugs | 8511.10 | 15% |
| Oil and petrol filters | 8421.23 | 15% |
| Vehicle lighting and signalling equipment | 8512.20 | 15% |
When Zambia wants a clearing agent
ZRA sorts commercial imports by CIF value. A consignment above US$1,000 and up to US$2,000 counts as small value, and no clearing agent is needed to make the declaration, though duty and taxes are still payable. Above US$2,000 the declaration goes onto ZRA's electronic customs system and a clearing agent is required.
For a large consignment the agent declares before the goods reach the border, attaching invoices, airway bills, manifests, bills of lading, contracts, certificates and any permits for controlled goods. Taxes are self-assessed and paid, a release order follows if the declaration is right, and a wrong declaration produces an additional assessment and automatic penalties. A buyer accredited under ZRA's Customs Accredited Client Programme can be given a special release soon after registration, before duties and taxes are paid.
What the standards agency checks on imported parts
The Zambia Compulsory Standards Agency, ZCSA, inspects imports only where a product is regulated under the Compulsory Standards Act, and its site says it currently administers 102 compulsory standards. It runs an annual import quality certification scheme, and a certificate covers the named product from the named supplier and country of origin, not other suppliers of the same product. A consignment can also be pre-cleared before it reaches the border.
The list of compulsory standards that ZCSA publishes names, among motor-related items, new and retreaded pneumatic tyres, lead-acid batteries, engine oils, automotive gear oils and number plates. Engines, gearboxes, brake parts, suspension parts and lamps are not named in the list as we read it, but ask your clearing agent whether anything on your invoice falls under a standard. Wet batteries and fluids are, in any case, goods we do not arrange for export.
How parts get from Dubai to Zambia
Easy Auto runs no freight. A part sourced in Dubai or Sharjah, from stock, a yard or a market, is handed to the cargo agent or forwarder you have chosen, who books the leg and arranges transit. With no seaport of its own, Zambia receives cargo through a neighbour's port, with a truck, and in places a train, covering the rest.
Three corridors compete. Dar es Salaam is the northern one, crossing at Tunduma in Tanzania and Nakonde in Zambia, which Wikipedia places at the northern end of the Great North Road; one trucking operator gives about 2,000 km from Dar es Salaam to Lusaka. Beira in Mozambique is the eastern one, about 1,200 km to Lusaka by the same operator's figures. The southern one runs north from Durban through Zimbabwe or Botswana, and Chirundu and Kazungula, both among ZCSA's inspection points, are the crossings into Zambia.
Sailing times depend on the service, and no delivery date is promised. A courier price shows why most parts go by sea: in DHL Express's 2026 UAE guide, 12 kg to Zambia (zone 8) lists at AED 3,792.16 before fuel surcharge, duty and tax.
The Zambian market and what Dubai stock suits it
Of Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi, Zambia takes the most from Japan: its 2024 vehicle imports from there topped US$300 million in UN Comtrade data on TradingEconomics, against about US$100 million for Zimbabwe. UAE customs data recorded US$9.88 million of vehicle parts and accessories exported to Zambia in 2024, while Zambia's own return recorded US$3.04 million from the UAE. The records differ, but both show a real trade.
Zambia drives on the left, so anything with a side matters, and lamps matter most. A dipped beam is angled for one side of the road: a headlamp pulled from a UAE-market car sends its low beam to the wrong side in Lusaka unless its markings cover left-hand traffic, and it is worth reading them before you pay.
What travels well and what stays behind
Small, valuable, clearly labelled parts suit air through your agent: alternators, starters, sensors, ignition parts, lamps marked for left-hand traffic and boxed brake components. Engines, gearboxes and half-cuts are heavy and go by sea in a consolidated container, which is where the Dar es Salaam and Beira routes earn their cost.
Wet and lithium batteries, airbags and pretensioners, gas struts, fluids and undrained engines are out of scope for any Zambia enquiry; they cannot travel without dangerous-goods handling, which we do not offer. Used parts are not banned in the Zambian sources we read, but we found no separate used line in the tariff, so the listed duty is the one to plan on and your agent confirms it.
Traders, wholesale and repeat orders
A workshop in Lusaka or Kitwe that buys on a regular basis can ask for a price list instead of single parts. The wholesale page covers minimums and mixed-supplier orders, and a consolidated load spreads freight and clearing cost over more goods.
What to send on WhatsApp
Tell the desk the make, model, year and VIN, attach a photo of the part and any number on it, and say if you want new, aftermarket or used. Then give your town, your Zambian clearing agent's name, whether a Dubai agent is booked, and a rough CIF value, because that decides whether an agent is required. A person answers with a quote and confirms how to pay in the same chat.
UAE parts shops that export
These shops are here because our record of each one lists exporting, sending parts outside the UAE, among what it offers. It is a record of what they told us or published, not a check that they send parts to Zambia today or of what is on the shelf, and none of them has paid to be here. Ask how the part reaches you, and who handles the export paperwork, before you pay.

Questions buyers ask
- What duty do car parts attract in Zambia?
- ZRA's tariff, last updated January 2026, lists 15% on every line of heading 87.08, 15% on alternators, starters, spark plugs and filters, and no duty on engines for vehicles. VAT at 16% is added. The tariff states the legal text prevails, so confirm the line with your clearing agent.
- Do I need a clearing agent to import car parts into Zambia?
- Above US$2,000 CIF, yes: a clearing agent must make the electronic declaration. Between US$1,000 and US$2,000 CIF, ZRA treats the consignment as small value and no agent is required, though duty and taxes are payable. Check the exact figure with your agent before you order.
- Is there VAT on imported car parts in Zambia?
- Yes. ZRA gives the standard VAT rate as 16%, and the customs tariff marks heading 87.08 lines as standard rated. VAT is charged in addition to the 15% duty on most parts, so your landed cost is higher than the part price plus freight.
- Can parts from Dubai reach Zambia by sea?
- Only as far as a neighbour's port, because Zambia has no seaport. Your agent books the sea leg to Dar es Salaam, Beira or Durban and a truck completes it. Sailing time depends on the service, and we give no delivery times for any leg after Dubai.
- Does ZCSA inspect imported car parts?
- ZCSA inspects only products covered by the Compulsory Standards Act. Its list names new and retreaded tyres, lead-acid batteries and engine oils among motor-related products. Engines, gearboxes and brake parts are not named in the list as we read it, but your agent should check each invoice line against the current list.
- Are used engines and gearboxes from Dubai allowed into Zambia?
- The ZRA and ZCSA pages we read contain no ban on used engines or gearboxes, and the tariff has no separate used line, so engines are listed duty-free and gearbox lines at 15%. VAT applies. Confirm with your clearing agent, because Zambian rules are changed by instrument.
- Will you deliver the parts to my address in Zambia?
- No. Easy Auto is a UAE parts directory with a WhatsApp parts desk, not a carrier. A cargo agent or forwarder you appoint takes the parts from Dubai and arranges transit and clearing into Zambia, and no delivery time is offered for that stretch.
