New alternators, starter motors and regulators from Dubai for export
Updated
The quick answer
We quote new alternators, starter motors, regulators and charging-side sensors by the list, each line graded Genuine, OE-brand or Quality aftermarket and matched to the part number on the unit's own label, because voltage, output and pulley must all agree. We supply no remanufactured or exchange units. Your cargo agent collects in Dubai, and a person quotes on WhatsApp and arranges payment there.
Key facts
- UAE-reported 2023 exports under heading 8511 were US$223.7 million, of which spark plugs were US$153.3 million, starter motors US$19.3 million and generators, the alternator line, US$20.4 million.
- Saudi Arabia took 39% of the UAE's starter-motor exports and 41% of its generator exports in 2023; Iraq took 1.7% and 3.2%.
- Pakistan and Egypt rank high under the whole heading, but together took only US$0.34 million of starter motors and generators.
- Denso's own aftermarket material says its starters and alternators are all new in box, with no remanufactured units and no core surcharge.
- One retail listing for a Toyota-fit alternator gives 12 V, 110 A and a 58 mm freewheel pulley with 6 ribs, and cross-references seven Denso and six Toyota numbers.
- Starters and alternators sit in the 10% duty band in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda; lead-acid batteries sit at 25% and are never part of our export quotes.
- Electrical items, a group that includes starters, were 16 of the 97 clear export enquiries we logged from July to 2 November 2026, second only to body panels.

Which charging and starting parts do we quote?
The family is four kinds of part. Alternators charge the battery and feed the car's electrics once the engine runs. Starter motors turn the engine over until it fires. Regulators hold the alternator's output at a steady voltage. The fourth kind is the small sensor that gives the engine computer the battery readings it controls charging with. Wikipedia says modern designs dispense with a separate regulator and leave voltage control to the engine computer, so a regulator line is quoted only where the maker sells one.
Every line is a complete new unit with its label. Batteries are not on this list at all, because carriers treat lead-acid batteries as dangerous goods and they stay out of every export quote. The crankshaft and camshaft sensors that read the engine's speed belong on our ECU page, where the module they feed is explained. The table shows what must agree on each part before a person can quote it.
| Part | What must match | The usual trap |
|---|---|---|
| Alternator | Voltage, output in amps, pulley type and ribs, terminal, plug, mounting | Two Toyota-fit numbers can differ in output, as the 100 A and 110 A listings do |
| Starter motor | Voltage, starter type, pinion and flange for the flywheel ring gear | Denso's manual sorts starters into three types: pinion shift, reduction and planetary |
| Regulator | The alternator's own number | Retail listings key a regulator to the alternator's Denso number, not to the car |
| Charging sensor | Part number and connector | Only fitted where the engine computer controls charging |
How big is the UAE's alternator and starter trade, really?
Trade tables often cite heading 8511, ignition and starting equipment, which the UAE reported at US$223.7 million of exports in 2023. The sub-headings tell a plainer story. Spark plugs were US$153.3 million of it, 69%. Starter motors were US$19.3 million and generators, the line customs use for alternators, US$20.4 million. Coils, parts and other equipment made up the rest. The whole-heading figure makes alternators and starters look more than five times larger than they are.
Saudi Arabia is the real destination for them. It took US$7.6 million of starter motors, 39% of the UAE's starter exports, and US$8.3 million of generators, 41%. Iraq took US$0.3 million of starters and US$0.7 million of generators, 1.7% and 3.2%. Both sets of figures are UAE-reported 2023 values from UN Comtrade, the latest year the UAE has filed.
Pakistan and Egypt look large under the whole heading, at US$10.3 million and US$9.2 million. Spark plugs and parts explain most of it. Of Pakistan's total, spark plugs were US$5.2 million and parts of the equipment US$4.0 million, against US$0.17 million of starters. In Egypt, spark plugs were US$8.8 million, and starters US$0.02 million. We therefore do not present either country as an alternator market, and a quote does not depend on that reading.
Almost all of it is goods passing through. Re-exports were 99.8% of starter value and 98.6% of generator value, so the units sold in Dubai are mostly made elsewhere. At about US$4.9 a kilogram the generators line is also cheap by weight, which suggests it holds more than new car alternators. Comtrade does not separate new from used, so that is our reading and not a published finding.
| Sub-heading | What it covers | Value | Share of 8511 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 851110 | Spark plugs | 153.3 | 69% |
| 851150 | Generators, the line for alternators | 20.4 | 9% |
| 851140 | Starter motors and starter-generators | 19.3 | 9% |
| 851190 | Parts of ignition and starting equipment | 11.7 | 5% |
| 851130 | Distributors and ignition coils | 11.4 | 5% |
| 851180 | Other ignition and starting equipment | 6.7 | 3% |
| 851120 | Magnetos and magneto-dynamos | 1.0 | under 1% |
What must match before an alternator or starter is quoted?
Voltage comes first. Most cars and light trucks run 12 V, while Wikipedia's article on automotive batteries says heavy trucks and earth-moving equipment can run 24 V, with two batteries in series. A quote states the voltage on every line, and a 24 V unit is never offered for a 12 V vehicle. Denso's September 2023 news added three heavy-duty starters linked to 15 OE numbers, for road haulage among other uses, a reminder that heavy-duty units form a separate list.
Output is next. Wikipedia gives typical passenger-car and light-truck alternators as about 50 to 70 A, semi-trucks as 140 A and buses or heavy equipment as up to 300 A. A retail listing for a Toyota-fit alternator shows 110 A, and a listing for another Toyota number shows 100 A, so the amps differ by number even within one make. We quote against the amps printed on the old unit's label, and a person tells you when the unit offered has a different output.
The pulley is the detail buyers forget. The 110 A listing describes a freewheel pulley of 58.0 mm with six ribs, an M6 B+ terminal and three mounting holes. A different diameter or rib count changes how the belt runs, and Hella's workshop advice tells fitters to check the alternator freewheel clutch and pulleys for smooth running, play and alignment. Photograph the pulley face-on and from the side, with the label in the same picture if you can.
Why does one Denso number sit beside six carmaker numbers?
Cross-reference lists run long. The listing for the 110 A unit names seven Denso numbers, from 1042102800 to 1042105491, and six Toyota numbers beginning 27060, beside references from more than a dozen other brands. Denso's September 2023 news item links its new passenger-car starter and alternator references to 18 OE part numbers, covering 89 models and almost 1.7 million vehicles. One maker number can serve many cars, and one car can take several maker numbers.
That is why we ask for two numbers and not one. Send the number on the old unit's own label, the carmaker's number if you have it, and the VIN. A person checks the pair against each other and against the engine code, and tells you if the label number alone would have allowed a wrong fit. Photographs of the label, the pulley and the plug cost you nothing and settle most queries before a quote is written.
Denso's technical manual sorts starters into pinion shift, reduction and planetary types and alternators into conventional, Type III and SC types. The names show that a starter for this engine can hide several designs, and the label number picks one. Regulators follow the same rule: retail listings key them to the alternator's Denso number, such as 104210-3050 to 104210-3052, so a regulator is ordered by the alternator's number and not by the car.
Genuine, OE-brand or aftermarket: what is new and what is not?
Genuine is the carmaker's own unit in its box; the Toyota numbers in the listing above begin 27060. OE-brand means the firm that supplies the carmaker sells the unit under its own name, and Denso's 2016 technical manual claims OE coverage of Toyota and of Ford, Opel, BMW, Fiat and Land Rover. Quality aftermarket is a branded replacement made to the same pattern. We hold no measured Dubai price for an alternator or a starter, and each quote gives a price for every grade it can supply.
Bosch, Valeo and Mitsubishi Electric are names buyers ask for beside Denso. The public pages we read say Mitsubishi Electric lists charging and starting products among its automotive equipment, Valeo supplies automakers and the aftermarket, and Bosch has made generators since 1914. They do not say which Toyota or Nissan number each firm supplies. A person therefore checks the number and never the logo, and calls a line OE-brand only when the maker is known to supply that carmaker.
The word new needs checking in this part family. Exchange units, sold against the return of the old one, trade under famous names, and cross-reference lists mix their numbers with new ones: the listing above groups some numbers under the heading Bosch Exchange. Denso's manual draws the contrast, saying its units are all new in box, with no remanufactured units and no core surcharge or returns policy. We supply no exchange or remanufactured unit and ask for no core, so the price quoted for a new unit is the whole price.
Which markets order them, and what duty applies?
Saudi Arabia is the measured market, at 39% of the UAE's starter exports. Its SASO regulation for auto spare parts names brake linings, filters, radiators, mirrors, lamps and suspension among its categories. The list we read does not name alternators or starters, and the SABER certificates sit with the Saudi importer in any case, so ask your importer whether a given line needs one before you order.
East African and Zimbabwean fleets can order by engine code. Our research notes, an analyst's judgement and not a maker's statement, read starters and alternators as units that usually fit right-hand-drive versions of the same engine, which suits Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. A Toyota Hilux, Hiace or Isuzu truck fleet can therefore send one list covering its starters and alternators beside filters and brakes, quoted by label number.
| Market | Duty or tax on starters and alternators | What else applies |
|---|---|---|
| Kenya | 10% in the East African tariff | 2.5% import declaration fee, 2% railway levy and 16% VAT on top |
| Tanzania | 10%, same tariff | Lead-acid batteries and filters sit at 25% |
| Uganda | 10%, same tariff | Filters and lead-acid batteries pay more |
| Zimbabwe | 10% on 8511.40 and 8511.50 | Your broker confirms the certificate rules for each line |
| Saudi Arabia | VAT at 15% | SASO regulation covers spare parts; the importer holds SABER certificates |
How are alternators and starters packed for your agent?
They are heavy for their size, the opposite of a radiator. Starters shipped from the UAE to Saudi Arabia in 2023 averaged about US$13.9 a kilogram, US$7.57 million over 543 tonnes, so a carton is dense and your agent's weight charge will decide the bill, not its volume charge. Keep every unit in its maker's box with the label outward, put heavy boxes at the base, and keep terminals and plugs capped as boxed.
The paper must follow the cartons. The packing list gives each line's label number and quantity exactly as the box shows them, so your agent and your clearing agent can match one to the other. A Deira consolidator's card that we read starts at 30 kg, at AED 38 a kilogram for Nairobi, which means a single alternator pays for 30 kg. A list of many units fills that minimum properly, and that is the reason for the trade-size rule.
What to send for a charging and starting quote
Send the VIN or the engine code, the label number of the old alternator or starter, and photographs of the label and of the pulley or pinion. Add the voltage and amps if the label shows them, the quantity, the grade you prefer, the country the parts go to and the name of your cargo agent. Six or more parts on one list is the working minimum, so a fleet restock for several vans suits.
A person replies on WhatsApp with each line, its grade, its brand and the number it was matched to, and marks as declined any line that label and VIN could not support together. Payment is arranged with that person in the same chat. Nothing is collected until you and your agent have agreed the packing and the paperwork: the commercial invoice with a customs code for each line, the packing list and the certificate of origin.

UAE parts shops that export
These shops are here because our record of each one lists exporting, sending parts outside the UAE, among what it offers, and records stock that covers electrics or their parts. It is a record of what they told us or published, not a check that they send parts to your country today or of what is on the shelf, and none of them has paid to be here. Ask how the part reaches you, and who handles the export paperwork, before you pay.

Questions buyers ask
- Do you supply remanufactured or exchange alternators and starters?
- No. Easy Auto exports new parts only, and an alternator or starter is quoted as a complete new unit, Genuine, OE-brand or Quality aftermarket. We take no core back and charge no core. Denso's own aftermarket material makes the same distinction, saying its units are all new in box with no remanufactured units.
- Can you quote an alternator from the Toyota part number alone?
- We can start from it, but we ask for the number on the old unit's label and the VIN as well. One maker number can be linked to many carmaker numbers, and one car can take several, as the listings we read show. A person checks the pair against the engine code before quoting a line.
- Why do you ask for the amps and the voltage?
- Because the same make can be sold with units of different output, such as 100 A and 110 A in the listings we read, and heavy trucks can run 24 V where cars run 12 V. A wrong voltage or output fits badly or not at all. The label of the old unit settles both.
- Will a unit for a left-hand-drive car fit my right-hand-drive pickup?
- Often, if the engine and the options match. Our research notes read alternators and starters as units that usually fit right-hand-drive versions of the same engine, an analyst's judgement and not a maker's statement. We quote by label number and engine code, never by steering side, and a person checks both before you pay.
- Is the UAE a big exporter of alternators and starters?
- Smaller than the headline suggests. The UAE reported US$223.7 million under heading 8511 for 2023, but spark plugs were US$153.3 million of it. Starter motors were US$19.3 million and generators US$20.4 million, almost all re-exports, and Saudi Arabia took about 40% of each.
- What duty do alternators and starters pay in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda?
- They sit in the 10% band of the East African tariff, in the 2022 edition updated in June 2025. Kenya adds a 2.5% import declaration fee, a 2% railway levy and 16% VAT. Lead-acid batteries and filters sit at 25%. Your clearing agent's assessment is the figure you pay.
- Can I add batteries to the same order?
- No. Carriers treat lead-acid and lithium batteries as dangerous goods by air, so batteries, airbag modules, gas-charged shock absorbers and fluids are left out of every export quote. Alternators, starters and regulators carry no fluid, and a person marks them dry on the packing list.
- Do you sell regulators separately from the alternator?
- Where a maker sells one, yes, as a new regulator ordered by the alternator's number. On many modern cars the engine computer controls voltage and there is no separate regulator, as Wikipedia notes, so a person confirms from the VIN whether your car has one before quoting.
