- Alternator inlet cooling-air temperature has climbed with engine bay packaging: around 90°C in 1960s vehicles, 110°C by the 1980s, and approaching 130°C in tightly packaged modern applications (Electronics Cooling, 2002). Those are temperate-market figures assuming roughly 20°C ambient; starting from a 45 to 50°C UAE ambient shifts the whole thermal budget upward and collapses the temperature difference the rectifier needs to shed heat.
- Those 90/110/130°C figures are alternator cooling-air temperatures, not general underhood ambient. General underhood automotive electronics are normally designed to a −40°C to +125°C range, with up to about 150°C at the hottest on-engine locations.

Semiconductor failure accelerates sharply as the rated limit is approached rather than degrading linearly.
- On a conventional petrol car the AC compressor is a belt-driven mechanical load on the engine, not an electrical load on the alternator; only its clutch coil draws current. The real sustained electrical load from cooling and ventilation is the fans and blower — roughly 25 to 45 amps combined, with higher peaks at fan start-up. Those are component-rating ranges, not a measurement from a specific vehicle.
- Dubai's warm season runs roughly mid-May to late September, with average highs around 38 to 41°C, so peak electrical demand and peak thermal stress coincide for about five months a year rather than four.
- Fine desert dust is drawn straight through the alternator by its own cooling fan, packing into stator windings and between rectifier fins as an insulating layer, and embedding in the brushes where it grinds against the copper slip rings. Sustained heat above about 50°C independently increases brush friction and slip-ring oxidation. This is far more aggressive than in ordinary European road service, though the same mechanism is documented in agricultural, quarry and unsealed-road use anywhere.

What the charging system is, and what actually breaks
The battery does one job well: it delivers several hundred amps for a couple of seconds to spin the engine. It is a poor supplier of steady current and it stores a small amount of energy. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over and supplies everything, and it also has to put back the charge cranking took out.
That is a bigger job than most owners assume. A modern petrol saloon in a UAE summer is running the AC system, a blower motor at high speed, one or two radiator and condenser fans, headlamps, an infotainment screen and the ECU. On a car whose alternator is badged 90A, there is less headroom than the badge suggests — and the badge is a cold, high-speed test figure rather than a promise, which we come back to below.
When people say "auto electrics" in a UAE workshop they usually mean this whole cluster: the alternator, the starter, the battery, the cables and earth straps between them, and the small parts that fail alongside. Any one of those can produce a no-start. Only a measurement tells you which.
An important vocabulary note before you call a shop. In most workshops here the alternator is the dynamo (Arabic دينمو, and it is how the part is searched for locally), and the starter motor is often called the self or self-start in South Asian workshop English. If you ask for an alternator and get a blank look, ask for the dynamo. Nobody is confused, they are just using the word the trade uses.

How the charging system actually works
Understanding the mechanism makes the diagnosis obvious rather than mysterious.
1. The belt drives the pulley. Alternator pulleys are geared up, commonly in the region of two to three times crankshaft speed, so a 700 rpm idle spins the alternator at roughly 1,500 to 2,100 rpm. That is a general design range and the exact ratio varies by vehicle, but the consequence is universal: output at idle is much lower than the badge figure.
2. Field current magnetises the rotor. Current passes through carbon brushes onto two slip rings and into the rotor winding, creating a rotating magnetic field. The regulator controls how much.
3. The stator generates three-phase AC. The rotating field induces alternating current in three stator windings offset by 120 degrees.
4. The rectifier converts AC to DC. Six or eight diodes in a bridge turn the three phases into direct current. This step is where the heat concentrates and where UAE alternators most often die.
5. The regulator holds the voltage. It compares system voltage to a target, typically around 14.2 to 14.6V on an older car, and modulates field current to hit it.
6. The battery takes what is left over. After the running loads are supplied, surplus current recharges the battery. When the loads exceed alternator output, the battery makes up the difference and the system voltage falls below 12.8V while running. That is the moment you are on borrowed time.
Why the badge amperage flatters the part. Alternators rated under SAE J56 have their headline output measured at 6,000 alternator shaft rpm, at a test voltage of 13.5V, with the machine cold — the standard's reference condition is roughly 23 to 28°C. Nothing about that resembles a July afternoon on Sheikh Zayed Road. An alternator badged 120A does not deliver 120A at idle, hot, in traffic, and it was never claiming to.
One modern complication matters for diagnosis. Cars built roughly since 2010 often use ECU-managed "smart" charging, sometimes with a battery sensor on the negative terminal. These deliberately vary system voltage between roughly 12.3V and 15.0V, cutting charging under acceleration and raising it on overrun to recover energy. On those cars a single voltmeter reading proves nothing on its own. You need to watch the voltage for a minute, or read the charging duty through a scan tool.
Alternator or battery? The test that settles it
This is the section that saves money. The whole question is answered by four readings taken in the right order with a cheap digital multimeter on DC volts.
Preparation matters. Measure resting voltage after the car has stood at least four hours. If you cannot wait, remove the surface charge first: switch the headlights on for one minute with the engine off, then switch them off and wait two minutes before reading. Take the reading too soon and the battery reads slightly high, which is exactly how a marginal battery gets called healthy on the page whose whole point is to settle the diagnosis.
Reading 1: resting voltage at the battery posts, engine off. This tells you the battery's state of charge, not its health.
Reading 2: cranking voltage. Watch the meter while somebody cranks. A healthy battery holds above 9.6V during a normal crank at 21°C, and in this climate you want to see above 10.0V. A battery that collapses below 9.6V while cranking is failing regardless of what it reads at rest.
Reading 3: charging voltage at idle, then at about 2,000 rpm, all loads off. Anything from 13.6V to 14.7V is normal on a conventionally regulated car. Below 13.0V is undercharging. Above 15.0V is a regulator failing high, and that boils a battery dry in a UAE summer very quickly.
Reading 4: charging voltage under load. Headlights, blower on maximum, rear demister, AC on. Voltage should stay above 13.0V. If it sags towards 12.5V or lower with the engine running, the alternator cannot carry the load.
One more test separates a nearly dead alternator from a dying one, and takes ten seconds. Switch the meter to AC volts with the engine running. You are looking for the AC ripple the rectifier failed to smooth out. Under 0.05V AC is excellent, under 0.5V AC is generally accepted as serviceable, and readings above roughly 0.3 to 0.5V AC point at a failed diode or a stator fault. Ripple that climbs steeply as you add load or raise revs confirms it.
The reason this test matters here is that AC ripple is invisible on a DC reading. An alternator can show a perfectly respectable 14.1V and still be pumping AC into a battery that cannot absorb it, cooking the battery and confusing every module on the bus.

How an alternator fails: the faults worth telling apart
"The alternator is gone" is a lazy diagnosis. Alternators fail in several distinct ways, they sound and measure differently, and most of those ways are repairable rather than requiring a new unit. Knowing which one you have is the difference between AED 300 and AED 2,500.
We group them into five below. That grouping is ours, chosen because each one has a different confirming test — it is not a classification anybody official publishes, and a real workshop will sometimes find two of them at once.
Rectifier diodes. The most common heat-related failure and the one this climate produces most. A diode can fail open, which cuts output by roughly a third and adds heavy AC ripple, or fail shorted, which can drag the battery down overnight even with the car switched off. A shorted diode is one of the few alternator faults that presents as a flat battery in the morning with no other symptom.
Voltage regulator. Semiconductor failure, usually thermal. Fails low and you undercharge; fails high and you overcharge, boiling electrolyte and pushing 15V or more at every module in the car. Regulators frequently fail intermittently when hot, which produces the classic complaint of a car that charges fine in the morning and drops its voltage after an hour in traffic. On many alternators the regulator and brush pack are one replaceable assembly.
Bearings. Two of them, front and rear, running at several times engine speed, in a hot and dusty environment. They announce themselves: a rising whine or a rumbling growl that tracks engine rpm, not road speed. A quick check is to listen with the belt removed and the engine off, spinning the pulley by hand. Rough or gritty means bearings. Ignored bearings eventually seize, which shreds the belt and takes the water pump and power steering with it.
Brushes and slip rings. Carbon brushes wear. As a rough guide, new brushes are often in the region of 15 to 20mm and are at end of life around 5mm, but dimensions vary considerably by manufacturer and design, so treat those numbers as indicative and compare against the new part rather than against this page. Worn brushes cause intermittent charging that often changes with vibration, and a car that starts charging again after a bump in the road. Slip rings score and pit; heavy grooving means the rings need machining or the rotor needs replacing.
Pulley or decoupler. Many modern alternators use an overrunning alternator decoupler (OAD) or one-way clutch pulley to smooth torsional vibration. When it fails you get belt chirp on start-up and shutdown, a rattle at idle, and sometimes charging that comes and goes. It is a bolt-on part, and replacing it is far cheaper than replacing the alternator, but it needs a special tool.

Why the UAE is harder on alternators
An alternator is an air-cooled power-electronics box bolted to the hottest part of the car. Everything about that is worse here.
The cooling air was already getting hotter before you added desert heat. Electronics Cooling's 2002 review of alternator power electronics tracked the inlet cooling-air temperature drawn into the alternator as engine bays got tighter: around 90°C in 1960s vehicles, 110°C by the 1980s, and approaching the 130°C range in what it then called modern applications. Two caveats we owe you. Those are cooling-air figures, not general underhood ambient — general underhood electronics are normally designed to a −40°C to +125°C range, with up to about 150°C at the very hottest on-engine locations. And the article is now more than two decades old, so read the numbers as a direction of travel rather than as today's measurement.
The point that survives is the one that matters here: that whole progression assumes a temperate ambient somewhere near 20°C. Start from 45 to 50°C instead and the entire thermal budget shifts upward, because an air-cooled component can only ever settle some number of degrees above the air cooling it. The temperature difference the rectifier needs in order to shed heat gets smaller at exactly the moment it is producing the most heat. This is one of the main reasons diodes and regulators fail earlier here than in temperate markets — one of them, not the only one. Dust, vibration, belt condition and an overworked battery all contribute, and nobody has published a ranking of causes for this market, so we are not going to invent one.
How much headroom the diodes actually have. The same Electronics Cooling review gives the progression in maximum reliable rectifier case temperature: roughly 160°C for the can-packaged diodes of the early 1960s, 180°C for the button and sandwich diodes that became common in the 1980s, and around 200°C for the press-fit diodes most manufacturers use today. Note that these are case temperatures. You will also see 175°C quoted for automotive diodes, but that is a junction rating for automotive diode families generally, and mixing the two measurements in one sentence is how people talk themselves into false comfort about a part they cannot see. What is not in dispute is the shape of the failure curve: semiconductor life falls away sharply as the rated limit is approached rather than degrading in a straight line, so a diode running 20°C hotter does not last 10% less time.
The load is at maximum exactly when cooling is worst — but count it correctly. One figure gets repeated all over this subject, including in an earlier version of this page, and it is wrong: that the AC compressor, blower and fans together pull 40 to 60 amps continuously. On a conventional petrol car the AC compressor is belt-driven. It is a mechanical load on the engine, not an electrical load on the alternator; only its clutch coil draws current, and that is a few amps. The real electrical draw is the fans and the blower. Typical single radiator fans draw somewhere around 7 to 15 amps, dual-fan installations 15 to 30, and a cabin blower on maximum around 15 amps with a higher surge at switch-on. That puts sustained cooling-and-ventilation draw nearer 25 to 45 amps, with peaks above it. Those are component-rating ranges rather than a measurement from any specific car, but they are the honest order of magnitude. Add lights, ignition, fuel pump, ECU and infotainment on top and a 90A alternator has less spare capacity than its badge implies.
And it lasts. Dubai's warm season runs roughly from mid-May to late September, with average highs from about 38°C to 41°C across those months. That is five months in which AC use is effectively continuous. Peak electrical demand and peak thermal stress arrive together and stay together for most of half a year.
Dust. Fine desert dust is drawn straight through the alternator by its own cooling fan. It packs into the stator windings and between the rectifier fins, forming an insulating blanket exactly where heat needs to escape. It also embeds in the carbon brushes, where it acts as a grinding compound against the copper slip rings, and sustained heat above about 50°C independently increases brush friction and ring oxidation. This is far more aggressive here than in ordinary European road use — though it is not unique to deserts, and we will not claim it is: the same mechanism is well documented in agricultural, quarry and unsealed-road service anywhere in the world.
Short trips. A 12 to 20 minute school run or a short drive to the mall does not recover the charge that cranking removed, because the blower and fans are eating the surplus for the whole trip. The battery ends each drive slightly lower than it started. Do that five days a week and the battery falls to a chronic partial state of charge, which sulphates the plates and simultaneously keeps the alternator working at high field current. Both parts age faster.
And the battery is already short-lived. Battery retailers and garages across the UAE consistently report typical local battery life of 2 to 3 years, against 4 to 5 years in mild climates, with cars parked outdoors in summer sometimes failing at around 18 months. Be clear about what that figure is: market consensus from people who sell batteries, not a controlled study or a manufacturer specification. The mechanism behind it — heat accelerating internal chemistry, evaporating electrolyte and damaging plates — is textbook, and the direction is not controversial. It is the practical reason the two-part failure loop described at the top of this page is so common here and so rare in Germany.

The starter motor: click, slow crank, or nothing
When the key turns and the engine does not spin, the sound tells you most of what you need to know. Learn these cases and you will rarely misdiagnose.
One loud single click, no crank. The solenoid pulled in but the motor did not turn, or the pinion engaged and stalled. Most often this is burnt solenoid contacts, a worn starter, or insufficient voltage arriving at the starter. It is the classic case where a tap on the starter body with a wooden handle gets one more start, which is a diagnosis rather than a repair.
Rapid machine-gun clicking. The solenoid is pulling in and dropping out repeatedly because voltage collapses the instant load is applied. This is almost always the battery or the connections, not the starter. Nine times out of ten it is a flat or failing battery, a loose or corroded terminal, or a corroded earth strap.
Slow, laboured crank. The starter is turning but too slowly to fire. Candidates are a weak battery, high resistance in the heavy cables, a worn starter drawing excessive current, or genuine mechanical drag. Measure cranking voltage: if it holds above 10V but the engine still turns slowly, suspect the starter or the cables, not the battery.
Absolute silence, dashboard lights fine. Nothing in the heavy circuit is being commanded. Look at the control side: ignition switch, starter relay, clutch or neutral safety switch, immobiliser, or the small trigger wire to the solenoid. Automatics that will not crank in Park but crank in Neutral have a range switch fault, not a starter fault.
Grinding or a harsh shriek. Pinion and ring gear meshing badly. Stop immediately. Continuing will chew teeth off the flywheel ring gear, which turns an AED 600 job into a gearbox-out job.
A starter's normal current draw is substantial. As a general engineering range rather than a model-specific specification, expect broadly 125 to 200A for a four-cylinder petrol engine, and considerably more — often 250 to 400A — for a large V6, V8 or diesel. Your car's workshop manual will give the real figure if you need it. The reason to know the order of magnitude is that it explains why every connection in the heavy circuit matters: a single corroded earth strap can add enough resistance to turn a healthy system into a slow crank.
Heat matters for starters too, but differently. The classic UAE complaint is a car that starts perfectly cold and refuses after a shutdown at a petrol station, cranking slowly or clicking. Heat soak raises resistance in the starter windings and in the solenoid contacts while also thinning the oil film, so a marginal starter that copes at 25°C fails at 70°C under the bonnet. If your car only fails to start when hot, test it hot. A workshop test on a cold engine will find nothing.

New, rebuilt or used: an honest comparison
This market is full of rebuilt alternators and starters, and that is not automatically a bad thing. Rebuilding these units is genuine engineering, not a con: an alternator is a housing, a rotor, a stator and three replaceable wear items. A properly rebuilt unit with new bearings, a new brush pack and a new rectifier can be as good as new. A badly rebuilt one is a cleaned-up housing with a wire brush applied to the outside.
When rebuilt is the right answer. The car is older than about eight years, the fault is one of the classic wear items, you have a shop that will state exactly what was replaced, and you get a written warranty. A rebuild of a common Japanese or Korean alternator is often a fraction of the price of a new genuine unit and will typically outlast the rest of the car.
When rebuilt is the wrong answer. The car is under warranty or a lease. The alternator is a smart, ECU-communicating unit (LIN-bus controlled, common on European cars since roughly 2010) where the regulator is not a generic part. The failure was a burnt stator, which means the unit was already cooked. Or you are being quoted a rebuild with no itemised list of what was changed, in which case you are buying somebody's guess.
Used units from the Sharjah market. Sajaa and the Sharjah Industrial Area are a real resource and there is no shame in using them, particularly for a discontinued model or an American import where new parts are slow. But understand what you are buying: an alternator pulled from a car that also lived in this climate, with the same heat history yours has. Nobody can tell you how much life is left in it, because no test measures remaining alternator life — a bench test tells you it works today and nothing more. Buy used when the part is unobtainable, when the car's remaining value does not justify a new part, or when you need to move the car today. Do not buy used for a car you intend to keep for five years.
The vocabulary you will actually hear. Shops here sort parts into three tiers that are well documented across the UAE market: genuine or agency, meaning the manufacturer's own part in manufacturer packaging; branded aftermarket from a recognised manufacturer — for alternators the names worth having are Denso, Bosch, Valeo, Mitsubishi Electric and Hitachi, several of which built the original unit anyway; and unbranded copy. You will hear branded aftermarket called commercial in a lot of workshops here. That is spoken trade usage rather than a formal or regulated grade, we could not find it defined anywhere in writing, and it is not used consistently from shop to shop — so confirm what a particular seller means by it instead of assuming.
One judgement, offered as judgement rather than data: the gap between a branded aftermarket alternator and a copy is wider than it is on most other parts. We cannot point you at comparative failure data, because none is published. The reasoning is simply that the components a copy manufacturer saves money on are the rectifier and the regulator, and those are precisely the two things UAE heat attacks.
One asymmetry worth stating: an OE-quality remanufactured unit from a known brand is usually a better buy than a new no-name copy at the same money. The rebuild at least started life as a properly engineered part.

This is the most under-diagnosed fault in the UAE and the cheapest to fix.
Current has to get back to the battery. It does so through braided earth straps from engine to body, body to battery, and often gearbox to body. Those straps live under the bonnet in an environment that combines heat, vibration and, along the coast from Dubai Marina to Ajman to the Abu Dhabi Corniche, humidity that regularly runs high with airborne salt in it. Copper corrodes. The strap can look perfectly intact from the outside while the strands inside are green and largely gone.
What that produces is not a dramatic failure. It produces a car that charges a little low, cranks a little slowly when hot, and throws electrical faults that appear unrelated to each other. Owners replace batteries and alternators trying to fix it.
The test is a voltage drop test and it takes five minutes. With the meter on DC volts, put one probe on the alternator's B+ output stud and the other on the battery positive post, engine running with a heavy load applied. You are measuring the loss in the cable, not the system voltage. Then do the same on the earth side: alternator case to battery negative post. The widely used shop rule is that each side should show less than 0.2V, and that anything approaching 0.5V is a fault to be fixed before you condemn any component. That rule is a workshop convention, not a manufacturer specification, and individual manufacturers publish both tighter and looser limits — if your car's manual gives a figure, use that one.
The same test applied to the starter circuit, taken while cranking, finds slow-crank faults that no amount of battery testing will explain.
Terminals. The white or blue-green crust on a battery post is not cosmetic. Clean the post and clamp back to bright metal, refit tight, and protect with terminal grease or a proper protector spray. Do not smear ordinary grease across the top of the battery, which just traps dirt.
A note on aftermarket wiring. Retro-fitted equipment is common on cars in this market: alarms, GPS trackers, dashcams, sound systems, LED light bars, seat coolers. A lot of it is fitted by tapping into whatever wire was convenient and earthing to whatever bolt was nearest. Those improvised earths corrode first and produce exactly the symptoms above. We have no data on how common that is here compared with anywhere else, and we are not going to claim it is the leading cause of anything. What we will say is that if your car has been to more than one accessory shop, that is where we look before condemning the alternator.

Parasitic drain: the car that is flat every Monday
If the car starts fine when driven daily but is dead after two or three days standing, the fault is probably not the alternator and probably not the battery. It is something staying awake.
All modern cars draw a small current when parked, to keep alarm, immobiliser, clock and module memory alive. Normal is broadly 25 to 85 milliamps once every module has gone to sleep. Older, simpler cars usually sit under 50mA. Anything above about 100mA in a car that has fully slept is a fault.
The trap is the sleep time. Modules do not shut down instantly. Depending on the car, full sleep takes 20 to 30 minutes, and on some newer vehicles up to two hours. Measure at five minutes and you will find a large, alarming, entirely normal current. Wait, or you will chase a ghost.
How to test. Meter on the 10A range first, in series with the disconnected negative lead, then step down to the milliamp range once you know the current is small. Lock the car, leave the bonnet catch and any door switches in their closed state, and wait for the reading to settle. Then pull fuses one at a time, watching for the reading to fall.
The culprits we find most often, in roughly the order they turn up: aftermarket GPS trackers fitted for insurance or fleet reasons and never removed; alarm and remote-start systems from a previous owner; hardwired dashcams in parking mode, which are usually the single biggest legitimate drain; amplifiers left permanently live; boot, glovebox and vanity lights whose switches have failed; and a shorted alternator diode, which is the one drain that points back at the charging system. That ordering is our experience, not a published statistic.
A useful shortcut for the last one: if the drain disappears when you disconnect the alternator's B+ cable, the alternator's rectifier is the drain.
Why the numbers are worse here. The days-to-flat figures below assume a battery that starts full and does not self-discharge. In a car parked outdoors in a UAE summer, self-discharge is substantially faster than in a temperate climate, so treat these numbers as optimistic. A 120mA drain that a car in London would tolerate for a fortnight can flatten a car in Al Quoz in a long weekend.

What alternators, starters and diagnostics cost in the UAE
Prices in this market vary enormously by where you go, and that is the honest headline. The same alternator job on the same Corolla can be a few hundred dirhams in the Sharjah Industrial Area and several thousand at a dealer. The difference is partly the part, partly the labour rate, and partly the warranty you can actually enforce.
What we can actually source. Two published figures we can point at, both checked in August 2026. Golden Horse Car Repair in Dubai advertises alternator repair from AED 250 and car starter repair from AED 200. Those are one advertiser's from-prices — not a market survey, and not a promise about your car. ServiceMyCar's UAE service pages quote AED 1,500 to 3,000 for a full alternator replacement, and quote that same band on a Honda Accord and a Nissan Altima as on a Mercedes E-Class, an Audi and a BMW. That consistency is informative in itself: it tells you the band is an advertising range covering a catalogue, not a measured price for a specific job. Note also that UAE workshop quotes are normally stated before 5% VAT.
A disagreement we are not going to hide. An adversarial review of this page argued that AED 1,500 to 3,000 is the luxury bracket, and that mainstream cars should be quoted nearer AED 900 to 1,800. We looked for that lower band and could not find it published anywhere we could cite, while the pages we can cite apply 1,500 to 3,000 to mainstream saloons. So we have kept the sourced band and flagged the argument rather than quietly picking a middle number. The practical reading either way is the same: a chain quote is the top of the market, an independent workshop fitting a branded aftermarket part routinely comes in well under it, and a four-figure quote on a Corolla is a reason to get a second opinion rather than a benchmark to accept.
The bands we are estimating rather than sourcing. The figures below for a branded aftermarket alternator fitted, used units from the Sharjah market, batteries, earth straps and drive belts are our estimates from working in this market. They are not from a price survey and we are not going to dress them up as one. Use them to sanity-check a quote, not to argue a price down to the decimal.
Diagnosis should be cheap or free. A charging and battery test is a five-minute job with a battery tester. Most battery retailers, mobile battery services and parts shops will do it at no charge because they hope to sell you a battery. A proper auto-electrical diagnosis, including voltage drop testing and a parasitic drain hunt, is real labour and is worth paying for.
Repair before replacement is often the right call. For brushes, a regulator pack, bearings or a diode pack on an older car, a repair in the low hundreds is a fair price and a sound decision.
Full replacement climbs quickly, and labour is the variable. On some V-engines the intake manifold has to come off to reach the starter, and that is three hours before anybody touches the part.
One piece of advice worth more than any price band. Get the fault identified before you get a quote, and get the quote itemised into part and labour. "Alternator problem, AED 1,800" is not a quote. "Reconditioned Denso alternator, 6 month warranty, AED 550, plus 1.5 hours labour at AED 150, plus VAT" is a quote you can compare.

Every figure in this section was read off a named UAE seller's own published page on the date shown beside it. It is what one shop asked for one part on one day. It is not an average, it is not a survey, and it is not what you will be quoted. Use it to sanity-check a quote, then get the quote. All of them are part-only prices with no fitting, and neither seller states whether VAT is included, so treat 5% as a possible addition on top.
We went looking for published UAE prices for the two parts this page is about, and the interesting result was not the numbers. It was the distance between them. A genuine European alternator sold over a counter in Sharjah and a Toyota Corolla alternator listed on a UAE parts marketplace are not the same product at two prices. They are two different markets that happen to share a word, and what we found is eight times apart end to end.
The European counter. Trunk Auto Spare Parts Trading, which trades online as partstore.ae from the Autoparts Complex in Sharjah and lists its coverage as Mercedes Benz, BMW, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, Toyota, Nissan and Volkswagen, had three relevant units listed when we read the site on 2 September 2026. A Valeo alternator, part 443272 under SKU VAL-013 154 5602, listed against Mercedes-Benz models from 2006 to 2015, at AED 1,254.75 with one in stock. A Bosch alternator, part 0121813101 under SKU BOS-013 154 0502, described only as suitable for Mercedes models, at AED 2,047.50 with one in stock. And a starter motor listed under OE number 006 151 3701 with no vehicle stated against it at all, at AED 1,352.61. The site does not say whether those prices include VAT.
The mainstream side. The Partfinder UAE marketplace, which carries listings posted by third-party sellers rather than its own stock, published four priced Toyota Corolla alternator listings when we read it on 2 September 2026: a used 2015 unit at AED 250 carrying part numbers 27060-0T300 and TE104210-9751, a used 2013 unit at AED 400, a new 2015 unit at AED 550, and a new 2009 unit at AED 650. No seller name, no emirate and no VAT statement is shown against any of them, and a marketplace listing is an asking price rather than a completed sale.
So we are not going to publish an alternator price range or a starter motor price range for the UAE, and here is exactly why. Four Corolla listings from unnamed sellers on one marketplace, plus three European units on one Sharjah shelf, is not a survey. Averaging them would produce a number that describes no car anybody owns: several times too high for a Corolla, and less than half of what the Mercedes owner is about to be asked for. A single range across a part that spans AED 250 to AED 2,047.50 in the same week tells a reader nothing they can act on. What follows instead is what actually moves the price, and what a fair quote looks like when you get one.
One thing this does bear on, and we are not going to bury it. The pricing section above carries a sourced band of AED 1,500 to 3,000 for a full alternator replacement, published on ServiceMyCar's UAE service pages and applied there to a Nissan Altima as readily as to a Mercedes E-Class, together with a fact-checker's objection that this is the luxury bracket. The Corolla listings do not settle that argument, because a part-only marketplace price and a fitted chain-workshop price are different things and cannot be subtracted from one another. What they do show is that on 2 September 2026 a new Corolla alternator was being listed in this market at AED 550. If a workshop quotes you four figures on a mainstream Japanese saloon, that is a reason to ask what the part costs and what the labour costs, separately, before you agree.
What moves the price, in the order that matters. The badge comes first and it is not close. A volume Japanese or Korean alternator is a commodity with several aftermarket manufacturers competing for it and a deep used supply in Sharjah. A Mercedes, BMW or Land Rover unit is a low-volume OE part with a thin aftermarket, and the two observations above are the whole argument. Before you compare any two quotes, check you are comparing the same market.
Then grade, which is the lever most owners never pull. Genuine or agency, branded aftermarket from Denso, Bosch, Valeo, Hitachi or Mitsubishi Electric, remanufactured with itemised parts, unbranded copy, or used from the Sharjah market are five different prices for one job, and a quote that does not name which of them it is has told you nothing. Ask for the brand and the grade in writing before you ask for the number.
Then whether the whole unit is being replaced at all. Most alternator faults are a regulator and brush pack, a diode pack, a set of bearings or a decoupler pulley, and every one of those is a part of the unit rather than the unit. A shop that reaches for a complete replacement without opening the old one has chosen the most expensive answer available. That is the single largest difference between a low quote and a high one on the same fault.
Then the electrical architecture. A LIN-controlled smart alternator, common on European cars since roughly 2010, is not a generic part and cannot be quoted like one, and a start-stop car needs the alternator its system expects. Amperage matters for the same reason, and so does the pulley type, because a solid pulley, a one-way clutch and an overrunning decoupler are three different parts on units that otherwise look identical.
Then access, which is pure labour and is invisible from the outside. An alternator at the front of a transverse four-cylinder engine is a short job. A starter under an intake manifold on a V-engine is hours of work before anybody touches the component, which is why we will not quote a starter replacement figure at all: on the same car, the part can be the smaller half of the bill.
And then the things that are not the part. Whether fitting is included. Whether the 5% VAT is in the number or added to it. Whether the old unit has to be surrendered, because exchange pricing assumes it. Whether the belt and tensioner are being done at the same time, which is sensible on a high-mileage car and should be priced separately rather than folded in. And whether the battery is being replaced too, which after months of undercharging or any period of overcharging is usually necessary and should appear as its own line rather than as a surprise.
What a fair quote looks like. It names the fault, not the symptom. It states the part by brand and grade, and ideally by part number. It splits part from labour, gives the labour as hours at a rate rather than as a lump, and says whether VAT is included. It states the warranty in months and says whether that warranty covers the part only or the part and the labour to refit it, because on a three-hour job those are very different promises. It says what happens to your old unit. And it is written down.
What a suspiciously cheap quote is usually leaving out. A used unit described as reconditioned. A copy alternator with no brand on it. Labour quoted without VAT that appears with it on the invoice. A rebuild with no list of what was actually replaced, which in practice often means brushes only on a unit whose diodes are already cooked. And the battery, which the failing alternator has probably already damaged, left in the car so the job can be quoted twice.
The one number we would rather you get than any number on this page. A quote for your actual car, from a shop that has your chassis number and a photograph of the old unit. That is what the enquiry button here is for, and it is the only figure on this subject that is worth anything.

GCC spec, US imports and why the part number matters
This is where ordering by model name goes wrong, and it goes wrong more here than almost anywhere.
The UAE parc is unusually mixed. A single model year of one nameplate can be present as a GCC-specification car sold through the local agency, a US-specification car imported from a North American auction, a Japanese domestic import, and sometimes a European-specification car brought in privately. They share a badge. They do not always share an alternator.
What GCC specification actually changes. The documented differences are in cooling and protection: larger radiators and higher-volume cooling fans, higher-capacity AC compressors and condensers, heavier-duty multi-stage air filtration for dust, and additional corrosion protection. We looked for evidence that GCC cars carry a different alternator output, bracket or pulley from the same model sold elsewhere, and we could not find a source documenting it for any named model — so we are not claiming it. If a parts seller tells you a specific model differs, ask them to show you the two part numbers.
What is well established is that US-market, Japanese domestic and European versions of the same nameplate differ from each other in electrical architecture: regulator control strategy, connector, amperage, accessory layout. European cars in particular are where you meet LIN-controlled smart alternators, which are not interchangeable with conventional units.
The practical consequence: "2014 Camry alternator" is not enough information to order a part in the UAE. It may get you the right part. It may get you a part that physically bolts on and either overcharges, undercharges, or refuses to communicate with the ECU.
What to give the seller instead. The chassis number (VIN) is the single best identifier and resolves origin, engine and specification in one field. Failing that, give the part number stamped on the old unit, which is the most reliable thing on the car, plus the amperage rating, the pulley type and number of grooves, the connector type, and a photograph of the unit in place.
This matters more on alternators than on many other parts because an incorrect alternator can be quietly wrong. A wrong brake pad does not fit. A wrong alternator bolts up, spins, charges at the wrong voltage, and slowly ruins your battery.

RTA testing, roadworthiness and what an inspection actually looks at
Here is the careful version, because a wrong statement about regulation is worse than no statement.
In Dubai, a vehicle must pass a periodic technical inspection at an RTA-approved testing centre before its registration can be renewed. The exemption people get wrong most often is a new-vehicle rule, not an age rule. The RTA's own vehicle technical inspection service page states it plainly: if you are the first owner of the vehicle and it is new and has no mileage, it is exempt from the technical inspection for a period of three years from the year of manufacture or the year of registration, whichever comes first (rta.ae, checked August 2026).
Read all three conditions, because all three bind. Zero mileage at purchase. First owner. And the clock starts at manufacture or registration, whichever is earlier — so a car built in one year and sold the next has already spent part of its exemption. A three-year-old car you bought second-hand last month is not exempt. Nor is an import that arrived with delivery mileage on the clock. "My car is under three years old" is not the rule, and repeating it is how people arrive at a registration counter unprepared.
Fees. The RTA lists AED 170 for a light vehicle inspection — AED 150 for the test plus a AED 20 knowledge and innovation fee — with AED 220 for heavy vehicles, AED 170 for motorcycles, AED 420 for classic vehicles, and a surcharge in the region of AED 200 to 300 for mobile inspection. Re-inspection is charged at a lower rate (rta.ae, checked August 2026). Fees change. Check the RTA service page rather than a blog before you budget, including this one.
Other emirates. Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates run their own testing arrangements through their own authorities, and the rules and fees differ. We have not verified them and we are not going to summarise them from memory. Check with the authority in the emirate where the car is registered rather than assuming Dubai's rules apply everywhere.
What the test covers. The RTA describes the inspection as verifying that the vehicle is roadworthy, with checks covering brake systems, lighting apparatus, tyre condition, engine functionality and body integrity, varying by vehicle category. From an electrical point of view that means all lights, indicators, brake lights, reverse lights, the horn and the wipers must work, and warning lights on the dashboard attract attention.
The nuance that matters for this page, stated at the strength it deserves. Nothing in the RTA's published scope mentions charging system output. We want to be exact about how strong that claim is: it is an argument from absence. We have read what the RTA says the test covers, and charging voltage is not in it — but we have not seen an official test specification that positively excludes it. On that basis, a roadworthiness test of this type is not an alternator output test. It is not designed to measure charging voltage or predict how long your battery will last. A car with a marginal alternator that starts on the day and has all its bulbs working will generally pass, and then fail its owner on Sheikh Zayed Road two weeks later. Passing the test is not evidence that your charging system is healthy.
The practical, non-regulatory advice is simple. If a warning light is on, fix the cause rather than the bulb. If the car has been jump-started recently, get the charging system measured, because a jump-start hides the fault rather than resolving it. And if you are buying a used car in this market, put a meter on the charging system before you put money on the table, because a three-year-old car here has had the thermal exposure of a much older car elsewhere.
How to buy the right part without a second trip
Most wasted trips to Sharjah are caused by insufficient information, not by dishonest sellers. Sort this before you go or before you send a WhatsApp enquiry.
Send the chassis number. It resolves make, model, year, engine and market origin in one string, and it is the single thing that prevents the GCC-versus-import problem described above.
Photograph the old part in place, then photograph its label. The part number stamped or printed on an alternator or starter is the most reliable identifier that exists, and it is often more useful than the catalogue. Include the amperage rating if it is shown.
Count the pulley grooves and note the pulley type. Six-groove and seven-groove pulleys are both common. Note whether the pulley is solid, a one-way clutch, or an overrunning decoupler, because the wrong one produces belt noise and belt wear even when the alternator itself is correct.
Photograph the electrical connector. Two-pin, single-pin, and multi-pin LIN-controlled connectors all exist on similar-looking units.
Decide grade before you ask price. Say whether you want genuine, branded aftermarket or used, because a price quoted without that context tells you nothing and is the main reason quotes vary tenfold. If a seller uses the word "commercial", ask which brand.
Ask two questions about warranty. How long, and what does it cover: the part only, or the part and the labour to refit it? On a job with three hours of labour, part-only warranty is a much smaller promise than it sounds. Get it in writing.
Ask whether the price includes VAT. UAE workshop and parts prices are commonly quoted before 5% VAT, and that is a real difference on a four-figure job.
And fix the battery at the same time. If the alternator has been undercharging for months, the battery is damaged even if it still starts the car. If the alternator has been overcharging, the battery is definitely damaged. Replacing the alternator and reinstalling a battery the alternator has already ruined is how people end up doing this job twice.
Electrics in the UAE — what is different
- UAE battery retailers and garages consistently report typical local car battery life of 2 to 3 years against 4 to 5 years in mild climates, with vehicles parked outdoors in extreme heat sometimes failing at around 18 months. This is market consensus from sellers rather than a controlled study, though the heat mechanism behind it is well established.
- Short UAE trips of 12 to 20 minutes with the blower and fans running do not recover the charge that cranking removed, leaving the battery in a chronic partial state of charge that sulphates plates and simultaneously keeps the alternator at high field current.
- Coastal humidity and salt aerosol from Dubai Marina through Ajman to the Abu Dhabi Corniche corrode battery terminals and braided earth straps internally; the strap can appear intact while the strands inside have corroded away, producing low charging voltage and slow hot starts that get misdiagnosed as alternator or battery faults.
- Heat soak is the mechanism behind the common local complaint of a car that starts perfectly cold and refuses after a fuel stop: raised resistance in starter windings and solenoid contacts at around 70°C under the bonnet. Any diagnosis must be performed hot.
- The UAE parc mixes GCC-specification cars with US auction imports, Japanese domestic imports and European private imports that share a badge but can differ in alternator amperage, connector, pulley grooves, bracket and regulator control strategy. Ordering by model name alone is unreliable; the chassis number is the only dependable identifier.

This page publishes no averaged range across them, because the spread is a market difference between mainstream Japanese and European OE supply rather than a range for one part.

- How do I know if it is my alternator or my battery?
- Measure. Engine off and rested, a healthy battery reads 12.6 to 12.8V; 12.2V means it is only about half charged. Engine running at 2,000 rpm, a working alternator holds 13.6 to 14.7V. Low at rest but correct while running points at the battery. Low while running points at the alternator. Above 15.0V is a failed regulator and damages both. If you cannot rest the car four hours, shed surface charge with the headlights on for a minute, then wait two minutes before reading.
- My battery light comes on at idle and goes off when I drive. What is that?
- Classic partial charging failure. At idle the alternator spins at only around 1,500 to 2,100 rpm and produces its lowest output, so a unit with a failed diode, worn brushes or a slipping belt cannot meet the load. Raise the revs and it just about copes. Most often it is a diode, a brush pack or belt tension. Check AC ripple: over 0.5V AC confirms a diode fault.
- Can a bad alternator ruin a new battery?
- Yes, in both directions. An alternator charging below 13.0V leaves the battery in a chronic partial state of charge, which sulphates the plates permanently within months. A regulator failing high and pushing over 15.0V boils off electrolyte, which in UAE heat can destroy a new battery in weeks. Always measure charging voltage before fitting a new battery, not after.
- Can a bad battery ruin a good alternator?
- Yes. A battery with a shorted or high-resistance cell presents a permanent low voltage to the regulator, which responds by commanding maximum field current for the entire drive. The rotor and rectifier then run at maximum thermal load continuously. In a UAE summer that is exactly the condition that kills diodes. Fitting a cheap battery to save money frequently costs an alternator.
- Why do alternators fail faster in the UAE?
- Because an alternator is cooled by engine bay air, and here that air is already very hot. Electronics Cooling reported in 2002 that the cooling air drawn into an alternator had climbed from around 90°C in 1960s vehicles to 110°C by the 1980s and was approaching 130°C in tightly packaged modern cars — all assuming a temperate ambient. Start from 45 to 50°C instead of 20°C and the whole thermal budget shifts up, shrinking the temperature difference the rectifier needs to shed heat. Dust drawn through the cooling fan, which packs the fins and grinds the brushes against the slip rings, makes it worse. It is one of the main reasons, not the only one.
- How hot can alternator diodes actually get before they fail?
- The alternator literature quotes maximum reliable rectifier case temperature, and it has risen with packaging: roughly 160°C for the can diodes of the early 1960s, 180°C for 1980s button and sandwich diodes, and around 200°C for the press-fit diodes most manufacturers use today (Electronics Cooling, 2002). You will also see 175°C quoted for automotive diodes, but that is a junction rating for a different measurement, so do not compare the two. What matters practically is that semiconductor life falls away sharply as the rated limit is approached rather than degrading in a straight line.
- Is a rebuilt alternator worth buying?
- Often yes. An alternator is a housing plus three wear items: bearings, brushes and the rectifier. A rebuild that replaces all three, from a shop that will itemise what was changed and give a written warranty, is a sound purchase on a car out of warranty and typically costs a fraction of a genuine new unit. Avoid rebuilds with no itemised parts list, and avoid them entirely on LIN-controlled smart alternators.
- What is the difference between a click and a slow crank?
- A single loud click means the solenoid pulled in but the motor did not turn, usually burnt solenoid contacts or a worn starter. Rapid clicking means voltage is collapsing under load, which is almost always the battery or the connections. A slow crank means current is flowing but not enough, so measure cranking voltage: below 9.6V and it is the battery, above 10V and it is the starter or the cables.
- My car starts fine in the morning but not after I stop for fuel. Why?
- Heat soak. With the engine off, underbonnet temperature rises sharply, and that increases resistance in the starter windings and solenoid contacts. A marginal starter that copes at 25°C fails at 70°C. The same mechanism affects intermittent voltage regulators. Test it hot, not cold, because a workshop test on a cold engine will find nothing and you will be told the car is fine.
- What is a normal parasitic drain?
- Roughly 25 to 85 milliamps once every module has gone to sleep, which takes 20 to 30 minutes and on some newer cars up to two hours. Older cars usually sit under 50mA. Above about 100mA is a fault. A 300mA drain will flatten a typical battery in around four days, and faster than that in a UAE summer because heat accelerates self-discharge as well.
- Can the alternator itself drain the battery overnight?
- Yes, if a rectifier diode has failed shorted. That gives a path from the battery back through the alternator with the engine off. It is the one drain that points straight back at the charging system, and it is easy to confirm: if the parasitic current disappears when you disconnect the alternator's main B+ cable, the alternator is the drain.
- How much does an alternator cost in the UAE?
- The figures we can point at, checked August 2026: Golden Horse Car Repair in Dubai advertises alternator repair from AED 250, and ServiceMyCar's UAE pages quote AED 1,500 to 3,000 for a full replacement — the same band whether the car is a Nissan Altima or a Mercedes E-Class, which tells you it is an advertising range rather than a price for your job. From our own market experience, a branded aftermarket unit fitted at an independent usually lands between AED 500 and 1,500 and a used Sharjah unit between AED 150 and 500, but those two are our estimates rather than published prices. All exclude 5% VAT.
- How much does a starter motor cost in the UAE?
- Golden Horse Car Repair advertises starter repair from AED 200 for solenoid contacts or brushes (checked August 2026). We do not have a sourced band for full replacement, and we would rather say so than invent one, because labour dominates the price: on some V-engines the intake manifold must be removed to reach the starter, which adds hours before anybody touches the component. Get the quote itemised into part and labour, and ask whether VAT is included.
- What does the alternator itself cost, as opposed to the fitted job?
- It depends almost entirely on the badge, and the spread is wider than most people expect. On 2 September 2026 the Partfinder UAE marketplace listed a new Toyota Corolla alternator at AED 550 and a used one at AED 250, while partstore.ae in Sharjah listed a Valeo alternator for Mercedes-Benz models from 2006 to 2015 at AED 1,254.75 and a Bosch unit for Mercedes at AED 2,047.50. Observed at thepartfinder.ae and partstore.ae on 2 September 2026: two sellers on one day, part only with no fitting, VAT status stated by neither, and not a market survey or a quote. We deliberately publish no average across them, because a single range spanning AED 250 to AED 2,047.50 would describe no car anybody actually owns.
- Why will you not give me one alternator price for the UAE?
- Because the honest answer is that there is not one. The published UAE prices we could source and date ourselves on 2 September 2026 ran from AED 250 for a used Toyota Corolla unit listed on the Partfinder UAE marketplace to AED 2,047.50 for a Bosch alternator for Mercedes at partstore.ae in Sharjah, both part only with no fitting and neither stating VAT. An average of those describes nothing. What actually decides your number is the make, the grade you buy, whether the whole unit is being replaced or only the regulator, diode pack, bearings or pulley that failed, whether the alternator is ECU-controlled, and how long it takes to reach. Get the fault identified, then get an itemised quote for your chassis number.
- What should I check before blaming the alternator?
- The earth straps and the voltage drop. Put the meter between the alternator's B+ stud and the battery positive post with the engine running under load, then between the alternator case and battery negative. Each side should show under 0.2V on the common workshop rule. Approaching 0.5V means the cable or connection is the fault, not the alternator, and a corroded earth strap costs a fraction of a charging system.
- Does coastal humidity really affect the electrical system?
- It affects the connections rather than the components. Along the coast, humidity combined with salt aerosol corrodes battery terminals, braided earth straps and connector pins. The strap looks intact from the outside while the strands inside have gone green. The result is low charging voltage, slow hot starts and unrelated-looking electrical faults, and it is very often misdiagnosed as an alternator or a battery.
- Is my car exempt from the RTA technical inspection because it is under three years old?
- No, and this is the rule people get wrong most often. The RTA's exemption is a new-vehicle rule: if you are the first owner and the vehicle is new with no mileage, it is exempt for three years from the year of manufacture or the year of registration, whichever comes first (rta.ae, checked August 2026). A three-year-old car bought second-hand is not exempt, and the clock can start from the manufacturing year rather than the day you bought it. Other emirates run their own arrangements — check with the authority where the car is registered.
- Will a weak alternator fail the vehicle inspection?
- Almost certainly not. The RTA describes the periodic inspection as a roadworthiness check covering brakes, lighting, tyres, engine functionality and body integrity, and its published scope makes no mention of charging system output. - Why does the shop need my chassis number for an alternator?

A wrong alternator often bolts on and spins, then charges at the wrong voltage and quietly damages the battery. The chassis number resolves origin and specification in one field.
- How long should an alternator last?
- Longer than most people here get. In temperate markets alternators routinely reach very high mileages and are treated as a long-life component. In the UAE, sustained high ambient temperature, a five-month season of near-permanent cooling load and dust ingress bring failures forward. We deliberately do not publish a kilometre figure for UAE conditions, because we could not find a defensible one and inventing one would be worse than saying nothing. Treat any charging warning on a car over five years old as urgent rather than cosmetic.
- Should I just buy a higher-amperage alternator to be safe?
- Usually no. A higher-output unit draws more torque from the belt, may need a different bracket and pulley, and on a car with ECU-managed charging may not be controlled correctly. If your standard alternator is struggling, the fault is normally wear, voltage drop or a failed diode, not insufficient rating. Fix the actual fault. Genuine upgrades belong on cars with added loads such as large audio systems or auxiliary lighting.
