Car headlights and tail lights in the UAE: assemblies, bulbs, LED and how to buy the right one

The quick answer

Car lights are sold two ways: as a complete lamp unit, called the assembly, or as just the bulb inside it. If one light has gone out and the cover is clear and dry, the bulb is the likely cause, and a halogen bulb is matched by its code, such as H4, H7 or H11. If the cover is cracked, yellowed or filling with water, or the car has xenon or LED headlamps where the light source is built in, the part you need is the assembly, and that is specific to your car, to the left or right side, and often to the facelift. Changing a bulb does not change the technology of the lamp: a halogen housing is shaped around a halogen filament, and Hella and Osram label their LED replacement bulbs as not approved for public roads. To get a correct quote on WhatsApp, send your chassis number, a photo of the front or rear of the car, and photos of the markings on the old lamp.

Key facts

  • A bulb code is a physical and electrical standard, not a brand. An H4 is a two-filament 60 and 55 W halogen bulb on a P43t base that makes both the dipped and the main beam. An H7 is a single-filament 55 W bulb on a PX26d base and an H11 is a 55 W bulb on a PGJ19-2 base. They are not interchangeable.
  • A listed xenon lamp gives a little more than twice the light of a listed halogen bulb at the source. A standard H7 is listed at a nominal 1,500 lumens. Osram lists its XENARC ORIGINAL D2S xenon lamp at 35 W and a nominal 3,200 lumens, and says it is to be operated only with approved electronic control gear.
  • A D-code is not a size. D1 and D3 lamps are listed with the ignitor built into the lamp, and D2 and D4 lamps are not. The S means a projector housing and R a reflector housing. D3 and D4 lamps are listed as mercury-free and run at 42 V where D1 and D2 run at 85 V.
  • An LED bulb in a halogen housing is not a like-for-like swap. Hella and Osram label their LED retrofit products on their own pages as not approved for public roads, and Philips says that under existing EU legislation the only exception is a bulb and a housing approved for use together.
  • UN Regulation 48 says dipped-beam headlamps whose light source exceeds 2,000 lumens may only be installed together with headlamp cleaning devices. That requirement belongs to the whole lighting system of the car, not to the bulb.
  • Headlamp covers are polycarbonate, which needs an outer coating because of its low scratch resistance and its susceptibility to ultraviolet degradation, which shows as yellowing.
  • Some fogging inside a headlamp is normal. Kia's service bulletin says it can usually be dried out by running the lamps for up to 30 minutes, and that water pooling at the bottom or fog that does not clear points to a leak, a blocked vent or a failed seal.
  • Headlamps for left-traffic countries have dipped beams that dip to the left. Japan drives on the left and the UAE on the right, so a lamp from a Japanese-market car can be wrong for UAE roads even when it is in perfect condition.

Assembly, bulb or control gear: what you are actually buying

Ask three shops for a headlight and you can get three different things quoted, because the word covers a whole unit, a light source and the electronics that run it. The assembly is the complete lamp that mounts on the car: the housing, the cover, the optics that shape the beam, the adjusters that aim it and the light source inside. The bulb is the replaceable light source of a halogen or xenon unit. Control gear is the ballast, ignitor or LED driver that powers a xenon or LED unit, and whether it comes with the lamp is a question to ask rather than assume.

The cover is joined to the housing by a seal, and Kia's service bulletin names a poor seal between housing and lens as one cause of water getting in. A cracked cover, or a lamp that keeps filling with water, therefore tends to be an assembly purchase rather than a cover purchase.

Rear lamps follow the same logic. A rear lamp unit is a housing and a lens with a separate light source for each job it does: tail, stop, indicator, reversing and sometimes a rear fog lamp. A fault in one function is often just a bulb. A cracked lens, a broken mounting tab or a unit with water in it is a unit.

So there are two questions to settle before any price is worth asking for. First, which of these are you replacing. Second, which technology is in the lamp. The rest of this page follows that order.

The four things a headlight order can mean
PartWhat it isWhen it is the right purchase
AssemblyHousing, cover, optics, adjusters and light source as one unitA cracked cover, a broken mounting tab, water that keeps returning, or an LED unit whose light source is not sold separately
BulbThe replaceable light source of a halogen or xenon unit, matched by a code such as H7 or D2SOne light is out and the cover, housing and seal are in good order
Control gearThe ballast, ignitor or LED driver that powers a xenon or LED unitThe lamp and its bulb look sound but it will not light. Ask whether it is included with a used or new unit
Rear lamp unitHousing and lens carrying separate light sources for tail, stop, indicator and reversingA cracked or water-filled lens, or an LED rear lamp whose circuit board is not sold on its own

How to tell a failed bulb from a failed headlamp

Start with the cheapest explanation. If one light has gone out, the other side works and the cover is clear and dry, the light source is the likely culprit. On a halogen car the replacement is matched by a code that the owner's manual or the old bulb will tell you. Hella's step-by-step guide for replacing the halogen headlamp bulbs on a Vauxhall Corsa D, reported by Professional Motor Mechanic in June 2020, says to fit a bulb suitable for the recess and to check the headlamp adjustment afterwards and correct it if necessary. It also recommends replacing bulbs in pairs, so that both sides have the same brightness and are likely to last about as long, and Bosch's aftermarket site gives the same advice.

Moisture needs more care. Kia's technical service bulletin on headlamp condensation, filed with the US safety regulator, says fogging is generally considered normal, can form when the air temperature drops and cools the inside of the lens, and can be dried out by running the headlamps with the engine on for up to 30 minutes. The same bulletin says that water pooling at the bottom of the lamp, or fogging that remains after drying, may be a leak, and lists a poor seal between housing and lens or bulb socket, cracks, a pressure washer and a car wash as possible causes. It also lists blocked vents and an over-saturated desiccant bag, and it notes that seals can be damaged by incorrectly installed bulbs. It says that in some cases headlamp replacement will be necessary. Nissan's 2025 Qashqai manual says much the same in fewer words: fog may form temporarily inside the lens in rain or in a car wash because of the temperature difference between the inside and the outside of the lens, that is not a malfunction, and the owner should contact a dealer or qualified workshop if large drops of water collect inside the lens.

A yellow or hazy cover is a separate fault. The lens is polycarbonate, and Wikipedia's polycarbonate article says automotive headlamps need outer surface coatings because of the material's low scratch resistance and its susceptibility to ultraviolet degradation, which shows as yellowing. Once that coating has gone the cover is past what a new bulb can fix. Polishing a cover is workshop work and is outside this page; what you buy when the cover is beyond use is the unit.

On xenon and LED cars the question is which part failed. A xenon lamp is a bulb that runs on control gear, so a dead lamp can be the bulb, the ballast or the ignitor, and swapping parts at random is the expensive way to find out. An LED unit may be different again. Nissan's owner's manual for the 2025 Qashqai describes its LED headlight as an LED module without serviceable parts and says to contact a dealer or qualified workshop if replacement is required. Where a maker takes that position, the assembly is the part.

Halogen, xenon or LED: the housing decides, not the bulb

Three kinds of light source are in use on UAE roads, and a lamp housing is designed around exactly one of them. A halogen bulb is a heated filament in a small glass envelope. A xenon lamp, often called HID, is an electric arc between electrodes in a gas-filled capsule and needs control gear to start and run it. An LED headlamp uses light-emitting diodes on a module built into the unit.

The manufacturers' own numbers show the gap. The standard H7 halogen bulb is listed at 55 W with a nominal luminous flux of 1,500 lumens. Osram's XENARC ORIGINAL D2S xenon lamp is listed at 35 W with a nominal luminous flux of 3,200 lumens and a colour temperature of 4,100 K, and its page says the lamp is to be operated only with approved electronic control gear and that changing it is recommended to be done by a professional.

The optics matter as much as the source. In a reflector headlamp the beam shape is designed into the reflector itself. In a projector headlamp a shade sits between the reflector and a condenser lens, and the edge of that shade produces the cut-off of the dipped beam. A bulb code tells you the source and not the optics, so two cars that both take an H7 can still have quite different lamps.

That is why changing the light-source technology is a different question from replacing a bulb. UN Regulation 48 says that dipped-beam headlamps with a light source above 2,000 lumens shall only be installed together with a headlamp cleaning device, and Wikipedia's headlamp article says that in Europe and the many non-European countries applying ECE Regulations even HID headlamps designed as such must be equipped with lens cleaning and automatic self-levelling systems, which it adds are usually absent on vehicles not originally equipped with HID lamps. Those are requirements on the whole lighting system of the car, and they are why a xenon headlamp is bought as a system and not as a bulb. They describe ECE practice, not UAE rules.

Bulb codes explained: H4, H7, H11, HB3, HB4 and the rest

Halogen headlamp bulbs are specified under UN Regulation 37, which covers motor vehicle filament lamps, and the codes in the table are its categories. A code names the bulb: its power, its number of filaments and the shape of its base. The base matters because it is what keys the bulb into the housing, so a bulb of the wrong code either does not fit or can fail to put its filament where the optics expect it.

H4 is the odd one out. It has two filaments, 60 W and 55 W at 12 V, so a single bulb produces both the main beam and the dipped beam. A lamp built around an H4 therefore has one bulb per side, while a lamp built around separate bulbs for each beam has two. In the US the similar bulb is sold as the 9003, also called HB2, and the HB3 and HB4 are the bulbs known there as the 9005 and the 9006.

Three codes cause most of the mix-ups. H8, H11 and H9 are all single-filament bulbs, rated 35 W, 55 W and 65 W, and their bases are listed as PGJ19-1, PGJ19-2 and PGJ19-5. The shared prefix hides the fact that the standard treats them as three different bases. Match the code exactly, and photograph the old bulb if you cannot read it.

Fog lamps use the same family. Philips's LED fog bulb is developed to fit three fog lamp types, H8, H11 and H16, which gives you a starting list when you are reading the old bulb of a fog lamp. The small signal bulbs that sit in tail and indicator lamps use a different set of codes, covered further down.

Xenon lamps and the D-code: D1S, D2S, D3S and D4S

A xenon lamp code looks like a size and describes four separate things. The digit is the generation, and it sets the supply voltage, whether the ignitor is built into the lamp and whether the lamp is mercury-free. The final letter says whether the lamp is made for a projector housing, S, or a reflector housing, R.

Do not mix generations. A D2S and a D4S can look alike and are different lamps: they are listed at different nominal voltages, 85 V and 42 V, so check what the existing ballast was built to drive before accepting a lookalike. The code on the old lamp's base is the thing to match.

The letters on the headlamp cover give a second check. Hella's marking guide lists DC for a xenon dipped beam, DR for a xenon main beam and DC/R for a bi-xenon lamp. Wikipedia describes the bi-xenon arrangement as a projector in which a shade is lowered by a solenoid to give the low beam and removed from the light path for the high beam.

A factory xenon system is specified as a set. Osram's page for the D2S says the lamp is to be operated only with approved electronic control gear. The practical meaning for a used purchase is to ask whether the ballast and ignitor come with the lamp, and whether they are the ones that were running it.

LED headlights, and the LED bulb in a halogen housing

A factory LED headlamp is a different thing from an LED bulb. Hella says the first full LED headlamp from its own production went into series in spring 2008 on the Cadillac Escalade Platinum, and that in 2013 it brought the world's first LED matrix headlamp with glare-free high beam into series production for the Audi A8. On a unit like that the light source is a module designed together with the optics, and on some cars it is not a serviceable item. Nissan's 2025 Qashqai manual says exactly that. For this kind of lamp, the part to ask for is the assembly, and the question to ask is what is in it.

LED replacement bulbs sold to fit halogen sockets are a separate product. Philips's own EMEA FAQ on its LED upgrade bulbs says they are designed for headlight units certified for halogen bulbs, that in the EU the legislation to make them legal for public roads has not been adopted, and that no LED retrofit product is legal on public roads there unless the bulbs are sealed in their housings and both bulb and housing have been approved for use together. It says a car fitted with them may fail a mandatory inspection where one exists, and that dashboard errors, flickering and dimming are common after fitting, which it treats with adapters for cars that monitor for a failed bulb. Philips also says it offers the upgrade only from halogen headlights, not from xenon.

Hella's pages for its LED retrofit products say they are not approved for public roads. Osram's catalogue page for its LEDriving HL EASY, an LED replacement for conventional H8, H11 and H16 lamps that it describes as mainly used for headlight and fog light applications, says the product is not ECE-approved, must not be used on public roads in any exterior application, and that some countries prohibit its sale and use. Neither the manufacturers' pages nor this page describe what UAE rules say about any of it, so the question to put to the seller is what approval the bulb carries and for which headlamps.

Approvals do exist for specific lamps. Philips says its Ultinon Pro6000 LED bulb is homologated by Germany's Federal Motor Transport Authority for selected vehicle models, and that a Korean approval for an H7 LED bulb dates from July 2020. The point is that an approval attaches to a named bulb and named vehicles. A generic LED bulb with no such list behind it has no approval to point to.

Three practical consequences follow. Order the light source the headlamp was designed for. Treat an LED bulb that arrives with no approval statement tied to your headlamp as a styling product, not a replacement. And if you want a different kind of light, ask what the factory offered for your model, because a factory LED or xenon version of the headlamp is an assembly designed as a system, which is a different purchase from a bulb.

Tail lights, brake lights and indicators: bulbs, LED and what to match

A rear lamp does several jobs. The unit on one side normally carries a tail lamp, a stop lamp, an indicator and a reversing lamp, and the rear fog lamp may be in the same unit or elsewhere. Hella's marking guide uses S1 for the stop lamp, R for the tail lamp, F for the rear fog lamp, AR for the reversing lamp and A for a marker lamp. The letters are on the lens, and they are a quick way to see what a unit contains.

Bulb-type rear lamps use the signal-bulb family. The two-filament P21/5W has a 21 W and a 5 W element on a BAY15d base, which is how one bulb gives both a dim tail light and a bright stop light, and Osram lists it among its signal lamps with an E1 approval. The single-filament P21W uses a BA15s base and the PY21W is the amber one. Check the colour of the indicator lens and the colour of the old bulb, because the orange comes from one or the other.

LED rear lamps have been in series production since 1993, according to Wikipedia's account of automotive lighting, so a used lamp from a newer car may be LED. On those, ask the question the headlight sections ask: is the LED board sold apart from the housing for this car, or is the unit the part? A board and a unit are different purchases, and a quote for a bulb on an LED lamp deserves a second look.

Colour is partly a market question, and it is one the UAE is part of. Wikipedia lists the GCC countries, together with the United States, Canada and several others, among the places where rear turn signals may be amber or red, so two lamps of the same shape can differ in the indicator section. If you are matching a used lamp, compare the indicator section as well as the outline.

Fog lights and daytime running lights

Front fog lamps are separate lamps with their own light sources, generally aimed and mounted low. Wikipedia describes the beam as wide and bar-shaped with a sharp cut-off at the top, and notes that fog lamps may produce white or selective yellow light. As above, H8, H11 and H16 are the codes Philips names for the conventional fog lamp types its LED fog bulb is made to replace.

Where the fog lamp sits in the bumper rather than in the headlamp unit, a damaged bumper can mean a damaged fog lamp even when the headlamps are untouched. The body parts guide on this site covers the bumper side of that.

Daytime running lamps are a separate lighting function. Wikipedia reports that UN Regulation 87 requires them to emit white light of at least 400 candela. On some cars the daytime running lamp is a light-emitting strip inside the headlamp unit, and where it is, a dead strip can mean the unit and not a bulb. Check whether your car's daytime lamps have their own bulbs before you order, and send a photo of the lit lamp if you can.

Front indicators and side repeaters are signal lamps too, and the same rule applies: some are bulbs in a holder, some are LEDs in a sealed unit. Say which yours is.

Left, right and the market the lamp was built for

Left and right units are different parts, so a pair is two orders. The dipped beam is asymmetrical, and UN Regulation 112 is titled for headlamps emitting an asymmetrical passing beam, so the two sides are not copies of one lamp. Say driver side or passenger side in your message rather than left or right, and send a photo of the car, so there is no argument about which is which.

The direction of traffic is part of the lamp. Wikipedia's headlamp article says most low-beam headlamps are specifically designed for use on only one side of the road, that headlamps for left-traffic countries have low beams that dip to the left with the light distributed with a downward and leftward bias, and that those for right-traffic countries dip to the right. Wikipedia's traffic article lists Japan as left-hand traffic and the United States and the UAE as right-hand traffic. A lamp built for a left-traffic market is therefore built to put its dipped beam toward the wrong side of a UAE road. The headlamp article also says North American owners sometimes import Japanese-market headlamps in the mistaken belief that the beam performance will be better, and calls that misapplication quite hazardous.

Some lamps can be adjusted or masked for the other direction and some cannot, and the markings on the lens say which. Hella's marking guide includes a driving-side marking with three versions: one for left-hand traffic, one for lamps that suit left or right-hand traffic and one for right-hand traffic. Do not guess from the shape of the lamp.

ECE and SAE are the two beam standards. Wikipedia says the ECE standard is allowed or required in virtually all industrialised countries except the United States, and that the SAE standard is mandatory only there. A used lamp from a US-market car is therefore built to different rules from a lamp built to the ECE standard, and the rear signal colour point above is part of the same story.

The efficient safeguard is to give the seller the chassis number and ask where the lamp came from. A seller who can say the lamp came off a car from a particular market has told you more than the shape ever will.

Where a lamp may have been built for, and what to check
Built forWhat can differWhat to ask the seller

Reading the markings on the old lamp

The old lamp is the best identification document you have, if you can still read it. Hella's marking guide explains what is moulded or printed on a headlamp cover. The beam letters say what the lamp is for and what is inside: HC is a halogen dipped beam, HR a halogen main beam, HCR a halogen main beam and dipped beam, HC/R a halogen main beam or dipped beam, DC a xenon dipped beam, DR a xenon main beam and DC/R a bi-xenon lamp. The slash in HC/R and DC/R means the two beams cannot be switched on simultaneously. The approval mark is an E followed by the number of the country that granted type approval, for example E1 for Germany, E11 for the United Kingdom, E43 for Japan and E48 for New Zealand. Osram's xenon D2S page shows the same system on a bulb, with an E1 approval.

The letters also tell you whether the bulb you are shopping for is halogen or discharge before you open a box. A lens marked HC/R takes a halogen bulb, and a lens marked DC or DC/R takes a xenon lamp and its control gear.

Photograph the front of the cover and the back of the housing, and every code you can find, including the code on the base of the old bulb. A bulb code, a part number printed on the housing and the approval mark together give the seller far more to work with than a model name does.

Genuine, OEM-supplier and aftermarket lights, and the brands you will meet

The trade uses three grades, genuine, original-equipment supplier and aftermarket, and the general explanation is in our guide to OEM versus aftermarket parts. For lamps there is one extra check. An approval mark on the cover shows which regulation the lamp was approved under, and a lamp with no mark at all has not shown you that. The mark does not identify the maker, so ask for the brand as well and expect it to be written on the invoice.

The brands in the table below are the ones UAE counters name for lighting. They come from two places: the manufacturers' own pages, which we read on 7 October 2026, and our own read in July 2026 of what UAE parts shops list on their websites. We cannot rank them. Ranking brands needs order history we do not hold yet, and a ranking lifted from a brand's own marketing would be that brand's opinion.

What our read of the shop websites does show is what is on the shelf. Among the shops that list headlight or tail light stock, Depo was one of the lamp-maker names listed most often, with TYC, Hella, Valeo and Osram also appearing. That describes availability and not quality, and it is a snapshot of one month.

Hella says its Dubai entity serves the GCC with nearly 3,500 articles out of more than 60,000 worldwide, so if you are quoted a Hella part it is fair to ask whether it is in stock here or has to be ordered in.

Heat, ultraviolet and moisture: what UAE conditions do to lights

Ultraviolet is the main enemy of a cover. Polycarbonate is the dominant material for headlamp lenses, and its coating is what protects it. Khaleej Times reported on 10 August 2022, citing UK-based Weather Online, that most parts of the UAE had recorded a UV index of 12, in the extreme category. We found no measured local figure for how fast lenses yellow here, so this page gives you the mechanism and not a number of years.

Condensation is a different matter. Kia's bulletin explains normal condensation as droplets forming on the inside of a cool lens when the air temperature drops. UAE summers pair heat with high humidity on the coast, so a lamp that cools in an air-conditioned garage and then meets warm moist air is easy to imagine, but that is our reasoning from the bulletin and not a measured finding. The bulletin also notes that certain models have headlamp designs that allow more moisture and condensation to collect than others, which is worth knowing before blaming one lamp.

Halogen bulbs run hot, and the handling rules follow from that. Kia's owner's manual says to allow the bulb to cool before handling it and never to touch the glass with bare hands, because residual oil may cause the bulb to overheat and burst when lit. Bosch's aftermarket site gives the same practical advice: wear gloves or use a clean cloth when installing new bulbs.

After any lamp or bulb change check the aim. Hella's Vauxhall Corsa D guide ends by saying to check the headlamp adjustment and correct it if necessary, and Wikipedia notes that headlamps must be kept in proper aim and that the regulations for aim vary from country to country. We do not state the UAE's aiming rule here.

Buying a used headlight or tail light: what to inspect

A used lamp is a normal purchase for lighting, and the inspection list is short. Each item is on it for a reason a maker or a regulator has given.

Look at the cover first. Yellowing or haze means the coating has gone, as described above. Then look inside for water marks or a tide line at the bottom. Kia's bulletin treats pooled water and persistent fogging as signs of a leak, so a used lamp that shows them has the fault you are trying to avoid. Check the mounting tabs and the housing for cracks, and check that the connector matches yours.

Check the light source. For LED, ask whether the unit lights fully, because on some cars the module has no serviceable parts. For xenon, ask for the D-code and whether the ballast and ignitor are included. For halogen, ask for the bulb code, and keep in mind that a new bulb beside an old one will not match in brightness, which is why Hella recommends replacing in pairs.

Check the market. Ask where the lamp came from, read the traffic-direction marking and the approval mark if they are legible, and compare the indicator section on a rear lamp.

For the broader question of whether used is the right grade at all, the body parts guide and the OEM versus aftermarket guide carry the general reasoning, and the used parts buying guide covers the market. This page stays with what is specific to lights.

What moves the price of a light, and how to compare quotes

Those listing prices do not tell you what the lamp for your car costs. What can be said is what moves the number, so that two quotes can be compared like for like.

A quote that does not say which of the factors below it is based on is not a quote you can compare. Ask the seller to fill in the right-hand column.

How to get a quick, correct quote on WhatsApp

Lighting requests reach us on WhatsApp as photographs, and the difference between a fast accurate quote and a string of follow-up questions is almost entirely in what you send first.

Send the chassis number. It pins the model year, the facelift and the trim, which is most of what decides which lamp fits.

Send a photo of the front or rear of the car in daylight. The shape of the lamp and the bumper tells an experienced eye which variant you have.

Send photos of the old lamp if you have it: the front of the cover, the back of the housing, any approval mark and beam letters, and the code on the base of the old bulb.

Say which side. Driver side and passenger side are harder to mix up than left and right.

Say what you want: an assembly, a bulb, or a pair; new, used or aftermarket; and whether you know the technology in the lamp, halogen, xenon or LED.

Then ask three questions back. Is the price for one unit or a pair. Are the bulb, the ballast or the LED driver included. And what brand and what approval mark does the lamp carry.

You do not need to know any of the codes on this page to send that. Matched suppliers quote against your photos and chassis number, and the codes are there so that you can check what comes back.

Where lights are sold in the UAE

Lamps come from several kinds of shop, and the right one depends on whether you want new, used or a particular brand. In our read of the websites of UAE parts shops in July 2026, the shops that list headlight or tail light stock are mostly parts-market traders and general parts stores, with a smaller group of accessory shops, body-parts specialists, used-parts stores and wholesalers.

The supplier block lower on this page shows shops whose own websites list lamp stock, and the directory pages for parts shops and accessory shops list the wider field. The efficient first step is one request rather than a round of calls: send the details above and let matched suppliers quote against them.

Headlights in the UAE β€” what is different

  • Headlamp covers are polycarbonate with an outer coating, and ultraviolet degrades that coating. Khaleej Times reported on 10 August 2022, citing UK-based Weather Online, that most parts of the UAE had recorded a UV index of 12, in the extreme category. No measured local rate of lens yellowing was found, so the page gives the mechanism and not a number of years.
  • The UAE drives on the right and Japan on the left. Most low-beam headlamps are designed for one side of the road, and headlamps for left-traffic countries have low beams that dip to the left, so a lamp from a Japanese-market car can be wrong for UAE roads even in perfect condition. Check the driving-side marking and ask where the lamp came from.
  • Wikipedia lists the GCC countries among the places where rear turn signals may be amber or red, so two rear lamps for the same model can differ in the indicator section. Compare it when matching a used lamp.
  • Customers asked for lighting parts 79 times through our WhatsApp bot and parts form in the 60 days to 7 October 2026, more than for brakes (73) or cooling (59). Lighting is one of the parts people ask us for most.
  • In our July 2026 read of UAE parts shop websites, Depo was one of the lamp-maker names listed most often among the shops that list headlight or tail light stock, with TYC, Hella, Valeo and Osram also appearing. This describes availability and not quality.
  • Hella says its Dubai entity serves the GCC with nearly 3,500 articles out of more than 60,000 worldwide, so ask whether a particular Hella part is stocked here or must be ordered in.
  • The shops that list lamp stock are mostly parts-market traders and general parts stores, with accessory shops, body-parts specialists, used-parts stores and wholesalers making up the rest, according to our July 2026 read of shop websites.
  • UAE summers pair heat with high humidity on the coast, which is the condition Kia's bulletin describes in general terms for condensation: temperature differences and air moving through the lamp's ventilation openings. That is our reasoning from the bulletin, not a measured local finding.

Headlights β€” FAQs

What is the difference between a headlight assembly and a headlight bulb?
The assembly is the whole lamp unit: housing, cover, optics, adjusters and the light source. The bulb is the replaceable light source inside a halogen or xenon assembly, matched by a code such as H7 or D2S. If one light is out and the cover is clear and dry, the bulb is the likely cause. If the cover is cracked, yellowed or filling with water, or the car has an LED unit whose module is not sold separately, you need the assembly.
How much does a headlight cost in the UAE?
It depends on the car, the technology, new or used, one unit or a pair, and whether control gear is included. We hold no dated quote data of our own for lighting, so we do not publish a price band. Send your chassis number, the side and photos of the old lamp on WhatsApp and we will come back with a quote for your car.
What is the difference between H4, H7 and H11 bulbs?
H4 is a two-filament 60 and 55 W bulb on a P43t base that gives both the dipped and the main beam. H7 is a single-filament 55 W bulb on a PX26d base. H11 is a single-filament 55 W bulb on a PGJ19-2 base. The bases are different, so they do not swap. Match the code on the old bulb or in the owner's manual exactly.
How do I find which bulb my car takes?
Read the code from the old bulb or the owner's manual, or photograph the old bulb and send it with your chassis number. The code names the power, the number of filaments and the base, and it differs between the dipped beam, the main beam, the fog lamp and the signal lamps on the same car. Do not rely on the model name alone, because facelifts and trims can change the lamp.
Can I put LED bulbs in my halogen headlights?
Hella and Osram label their own LED retrofit products as not approved for public roads, and Philips's EMEA FAQ says its LED upgrade bulbs are designed for headlight units certified for halogen bulbs and that under existing EU legislation the exception is a bulb and housing approved for use together. Philips also reports dashboard errors, flicker and dimming as common after fitting. We do not describe UAE rules. Ask the seller what approval the bulb carries and for which headlamps.
Can I convert halogen headlights to xenon?
A xenon system is specified as a set. Osram says its D2S lamp is to be operated only with approved electronic control gear, and UN Regulation 48 says dipped-beam headlamps with a light source above 2,000 lumens may only be installed together with headlamp cleaning devices. A halogen housing is designed around a halogen filament, so the usual route is a complete xenon headlamp assembly made for your car, not a bulb swap.
What do D1S, D2S, D3S and D4S mean?
They are xenon discharge lamp codes. The digit is the generation: D1 and D2 are listed at 85 V and D3 and D4 at 42 V and mercury-free, and D1 and D3 are listed with the ignitor built into the lamp. The final letter is S for a projector housing and R for a reflector housing. Match the code on the old lamp exactly, and ask whether the ballast and ignitor come with it.
Why are my headlights yellow or cloudy?
Headlamp covers are polycarbonate, and polycarbonate headlamps need an outer coating because the material has low scratch resistance and is susceptible to ultraviolet degradation, which shows as yellowing. When the coating has gone, a new bulb does not fix the cover. We found no measured local rate for how fast this happens in the UAE, only that the mechanism is ultraviolet, and Khaleej Times, citing Weather Online, reported a UV index of 12 for most parts of the country on 10 August 2022.
Is it normal to have moisture inside a headlight?
Some fogging is normal. Kia's service bulletin says it forms when the air temperature drops and cools the inside of the lens, and can usually be dried out by running the headlamps for up to 30 minutes. It says water pooling at the bottom, or fog that remains after drying, may be a leak: a poor seal, a crack, a blocked vent, a saturated desiccant bag or damage from a pressure washer, car wash or incorrectly installed bulb. In some cases it says replacement will be necessary. Nissan's owner's manual for the 2025 Qashqai also calls temporary fog inside the lens, caused by the temperature difference between inside and outside, not a malfunction, and says to contact a dealer or workshop if large drops of water collect.
Should I replace headlight bulbs in pairs?
Hella recommends it, according to Professional Motor Mechanic's June 2020 report of its Vauxhall Corsa D guide, so that both bulbs have the same brightness and are likely to last about as long. Bosch's aftermarket site says the same: if one headlight or taillight fails the other is likely to fail soon, and replacing just one bulb can lead to uneven lighting. Check the headlamp aim after replacing, and correct it if necessary.
Why should I not touch a halogen bulb with my fingers?
Kia's owner's manual says never to touch the glass with bare hands, because residual oil may cause the bulb to overheat and burst when lit, and to let the bulb cool before handling it. Bosch's aftermarket site says to wear gloves or use a clean cloth when installing new bulbs.
Do headlights need aiming after replacement?
Check it. Hella's Vauxhall Corsa D guide for a bulb replacement says to check the headlamp adjustment and correct it if necessary, and Wikipedia's headlamp article says headlamps must be kept in proper aim. We do not state what the UAE requires, so ask the workshop that fits the lamp to check the aim.
What is the difference between a left and a right headlight?
They are different parts and you order each separately. The dipped beam is asymmetrical, so the units are not copies of one lamp. In your message say driver side or passenger side rather than left or right, and send a photo of the car so there is no doubt which unit you mean.
Can I fit a Japanese headlight on my car in the UAE?
Be careful. Wikipedia's headlamp article says most low-beam headlamps are designed for use on only one side of the road, and that headlamps for left-traffic countries have low beams that dip to the left. Japan is left-hand traffic and the UAE is right-hand traffic. The same article says North American owners sometimes import Japanese-market headlamps in the mistaken belief that the beam is better, and calls that misapplication quite hazardous. Ask the seller whether the lamp is marked for right-hand traffic or for either, and where it came from.
What do the letters HC/R or DC/R on my headlight mean?
According to Hella's marking guide, HC is a halogen dipped beam, HR a halogen main beam, HCR a halogen main beam and dipped beam, HC/R a halogen main beam or dipped beam, DC a xenon dipped beam, DR a xenon main beam and DC/R a bi-xenon lamp, and a slash means the two beams cannot be switched on simultaneously. They tell you whether the lamp takes a halogen bulb or a xenon lamp with control gear. The mark beginning with E followed by a number is the approval country code, such as E1 for Germany or E43 for Japan.
Are Depo and TYC headlights good?
Both are Taiwanese lamp makers that UAE parts shops list on their websites. Depo says its Lukang plant and headquarters were founded in 1978, and TYC's site describes both OEM and aftermarket business. We cannot rank brands, because that needs order history we do not hold yet, and quality can differ between product lines. Ask for the brand to be written on the invoice and check for an approval mark on the cover.
What bulb does a tail light take?
It depends on the lamp. Common signal bulb codes are the P21/5W, with a 21 W and a 5 W filament on a BAY15d base for a combined stop and tail function, the single-filament P21W on a BA15s base, the amber PY21W for indicators and the small W5W. Some cars use LEDs built into the lamp instead, in which case the lamp may be the part. Read the old bulb or send a photo of it.
What are daytime running lights, and do they have their own bulbs?
Daytime running lamps are a separate lighting function, and Wikipedia reports that UN Regulation 87 requires them to emit white light of at least 400 candela. On some cars they are an LED strip inside the headlamp unit, and where they are, a dead strip can mean replacing the unit and not a bulb. On other cars they have a bulb of their own. Send a photo of the lit lamp so the seller can tell which you have.
Why does my new LED bulb flicker or show a warning on the dashboard?
Philips's EMEA FAQ says error messages on the dashboard, flickering or dimming are common when upgrading to LED bulbs, because an LED bulb draws much less power than a conventional one and a bulb-failure warning system can fail to detect it. Philips sells adapters for the purpose. The bulb is not necessarily faulty. If the problem remains, going back to the original bulb type is the simplest fix.
What should I send on WhatsApp to get a headlight or tail light quote?
Your chassis number, a daylight photo of the front or rear of the car, photos of the old lamp including the back of the housing, any approval mark, the beam letters and the code on the old bulb, and which side you need. Say whether you want an assembly or a bulb, new, used or aftermarket, and one unit or a pair. Then ask whether the bulb, ballast or LED driver is included and what brand and approval mark the lamp carries.
