Half-cut, nose-cut and front-cut engines from Dubai for buyers abroad

Updated

The quick answer

A half cut is the front section of a donor car with the engine, gearbox and wiring still in place. A front cut stops short of the doors, and a nose cut stops at the radiator, before the engine. Buyers abroad send the engine code, chassis number and photos on WhatsApp, and a person checks UAE stock and the Sharjah and Dubai yards before replying with a quote. The buyer's own cargo agent collects in Dubai and ships it on. Engines go drained, and we do not ship abroad ourselves.

Key facts

  • Seychelles customs notes rank the cuts by reach: a nose cut stops at the radiator, a front cut adds engine and dashboard, a half cut adds doors and seats.
  • A front cut as defined there carries the complete engine and gearbox, driveshaft, front hub, wiring and dashboard, so one donor supplies parts that belong together.
  • A cut is freight, not a parcel: DHL's UAE guide prices bulky loads by volume, dividing length by width by height in centimetres by 5,000.
  • Under the IMDG Code an engine empty of fuel is not regulated cargo, while one still holding fuel is. We quote drained engines only.
  • Kenya requires pre-shipment inspection and a certificate for used spare parts from the UAE; each country page covers its own market's rules.
  • Customs tariff rules class an incomplete article with the essential character of the whole as the whole, so a cut may be read as a vehicle.
  • Send the engine code, the chassis number or VIN, and photos of the engine bay and plate; a person replies with a quote on WhatsApp.
  • We do not ship abroad: your own cargo agent or forwarder collects in Dubai and carries the cut onward.

What separates a nose cut, a front cut and a half cut?

Sellers use three names for the front of a car that has been cut away from the rest, and the names are not interchangeable. The clearest written definitions we found are in customs notes published for the Seychelles trade portal, where cut vehicles are regulated. They matter because they list parts instead of adjectives, and the table below follows them.

Those are one country's customs definitions, not a standard that every yard in Sharjah follows. A yard's front cut may stop sooner or run further back than the list, and a half cut may or may not still carry the seats. By that definition a nose cut has no engine on it, so a seller who offers an engine on a nose cut is using the word differently. That is one more reason the first answer to any quote should be an itemised list with photographs, not a name.

How far each cut runs, from Seychelles customs notes read on 7 October 2026
CutWhere it endsWhat the notes list
Nose cutAt the radiator and front cross-memberHeadlamps, bumper, grille, top brace, air-conditioning condenser and pipes, radiator, front cross-member and the tips of the fenders
Front cutBehind the engine bay and dashboardEverything in a nose cut, plus front suspension, bonnet, both fenders, chassis members, bulkhead, engine compartment, dashboard, wiring, the complete engine and gearbox, driveshaft, front hub and front pillars
Half cutThrough the cabinEverything in a front cut, plus both front doors with trim, the front seats, part of the floor and carpet, the windscreen, part of the roof panel and the handbrake assembly

What is on the cut, and what should you ask for?

In a front cut or half cut the engine, gearbox, driveshaft and wiring come from one donor car, so they belong together. That is the argument for taking a cut over a loose engine: nothing has been mixed between cars. It also means the donor is the thing to check. Ask for the engine code from the plate, the gearbox type, and whether the wiring and the engine control unit are still on the cut.

Ask for photographs of the cut from the front and both sides, of the engine bay, and of the donor's chassis number. A car built for the Japanese market often carries a short chassis number, a model code, a hyphen and a serial number, instead of a 17-character VIN. The letters at the start of that model code often point to the engine family, which is why we ask for it.

Why do buyers abroad take Japanese engines in a cut?

The trade is not new. Khaleej Times described Sharjah's used-parts outlets in August 2006, many of them dealing in engines imported from Japan, with buyers coming from Africa and further afield. Buyers still use the same vocabulary: Google's public search suggestions for half cut engine, run with Kenya and Nigeria country settings on 7 October 2026, included half cut engine meaning, half cut engine for sale and front cut engine.

In Nigeria the same engines are sold as tokunbo, the word buyers there use for foreign-used parts. A Nigerian trade article from August 2026 reports that importers in Ladipo market land 20 ft and 40 ft containers of tokunbo and new parts every month from five origins, Dubai and Japan among them. A cut suits that way of buying because it moves as one heavy piece at container scale.

Which drive side does your cut need?

Japan drives on the left, so cars built for its roads are normally right-hand drive. The UAE drives on the right, so cars sold here are normally left-hand drive. Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia and Malawi drive on the left, as Japan does. Nigeria and Ghana drive on the right, as the UAE does.

A cut taken from a right-hand-drive donor keeps its right-hand dashboard and steering. A buyer in Nigeria or Ghana who wants the engine and gearbox for a left-hand-drive car should say so, because the cabin side of that cut is not the side the car needs. Tell us which side your car is driven from, and whether you want the whole cut or only the engine and gearbox taken from it, and the desk asks the yard what matches.

How does a half cut travel from Dubai to you?

A cut is freight, not a parcel. Couriers price large, light-for-their-size loads by volume: DHL's UAE rate guide multiplies length, width and height in centimetres, divides by 5,000 for each piece, and adds fixed surcharges to any piece over 70 kg or longer than 100 cm. A front cut is well beyond both lines, so it moves through a cargo agent and not as an express parcel.

In practice the buyer's own cargo agent or forwarder collects in Dubai and books the cut into a container, either a whole one or a share of one. A Dubai forwarder's guide to freight from the UAE to Kenya, dated February 2026, describes the two plainly: rent a whole 20 ft or 40 ft container, or pay for the space you use by the cubic metre, with a one-cubic-metre minimum at most forwarders.

Easy Auto does not ship abroad and does not promise delivery times; your agent gives you the schedule. Confirm that your agent takes engines and cuts, and what they want on the paperwork, before the cut is ordered and not after.

Why engines travel drained, and what else is left out

Shipping lines apply the IMDG Code. One shipping line's published shipper's declaration quotes the Code's Special Provision 363: an engine empty of liquid or gaseous fuel, carrying no other dangerous goods, is not subject to the Code. It counts as empty when the fuel tank has been drained and the engine cannot run for lack of fuel, and fuel lines, filters and injectors need not be flushed. An engine that still holds fuel is classed as dangerous cargo.

Our rule goes further than that minimum. We quote engines drained of fuel, oil and coolant, and we leave the battery, airbag modules, belt pretensioners, gas-filled shock absorbers and anything still holding fluid out of an export quote, because they raise dangerous-goods questions we do not handle. DHL's UAE guide, for one, lists a dangerous goods surcharge and says a contractual agreement is required.

Which rules can apply to a used engine at your border?

Start with how customs reads what you are buying. The World Customs Organization's rules for classifying goods say an incomplete article is classed as the complete one if, as presented, it has the essential character of the whole. So a customs office may treat a cut that still looks like a car as a vehicle, with a vehicle's rules, and not as a spare part. Seychelles goes further and uses its import licensing to ban half cuts.

Used goods meet their own checks. Kenya's standards bureau requires used spare parts from the UAE to be inspected before shipment, with a radiation check, and to arrive with a certificate, or face inspection at the port. South African trade guidance says second-hand goods need an import permit held by the South African importer and must be marked second-hand on the invoice or waybill. These are examples, and other markets differ.

We do not restate each market's rules here. The country pages take each market in turn, and your clearing agent should confirm the current position before you pay for a cut. Whatever the market, an engine goes on the invoice as used.

What to send on WhatsApp, and what happens next

Send the engine code, the chassis number or VIN, the donor model and year if you know them, which side your car is driven from, and whether you want the whole cut or the engine and gearbox only. Add a photograph of the engine plate and of the car the engine is going into. The more of that arrives in the first message, the fewer questions come back.

A person at Easy Auto then checks UAE stock and the Sharjah and Dubai parts markets and yards, and replies on WhatsApp with a quote and a list of what is on the cut. How to pay is confirmed in that chat. When you agree, your cargo agent collects in Dubai. This page shows no prices, because a cut is priced on its engine, its condition and what is still fitted, so a person quotes each one.

UAE parts shops that export

These shops are here because our record of each one lists exporting, sending parts outside the UAE, among what it offers, and records stock that covers engines or their parts. It is a record of what they told us or published, not a check that they send parts to your country today or of what is on the shelf, and none of them has paid to be here. Ask how the part reaches you, and who handles the export paperwork, before you pay.

Questions buyers ask

What does half cut engine mean?
A half cut is the front section of a donor car cut through the cabin, with the engine, gearbox, wiring and dashboard still in place. A nose cut stops earlier, at the radiator and front cross-member, so by that definition it has no engine on it, and a front cut stops behind the engine bay and dashboard. Sellers use the names loosely, so ask for a list of what is on the cut.
Can I buy a half cut from Dubai and have it shipped home?
Yes, through your own cargo agent or forwarder, who collects in Dubai and books it as freight. Easy Auto finds the cut and quotes it on WhatsApp but does not ship abroad itself, and we do not promise delivery times. Your agent gives you the sailing or flight schedule.
Do you export engines with oil and fuel still in them?
No. We quote engines drained of fuel, oil and coolant. Under the IMDG Code an engine empty of fuel is not regulated cargo, while one still holding fuel is, so a drained engine keeps the booking simple. We also leave batteries, airbag modules, belt pretensioners and gas-filled shock absorbers out of an export quote.
What do I need to send to get a quote?
The engine code from the plate, the chassis number or VIN of your car, the donor model if you know it, your car's drive side, and photographs of the engine plate and the car. Say whether you want the whole cut or just the engine and gearbox, and which country it is going to.
Which half cut matches a right-hand-drive car?
A cut from a right-hand-drive donor, such as a Japanese-market car, keeps right-hand-drive steering and dashboard. Seven of the markets we write for drive on the left, so their cars are normally right-hand drive, while Nigeria and Ghana drive on the right. Tell us your car's side and the desk asks the yard what matches.
Will customs treat a half cut as a spare part or as a car?
That is the importing country's decision. The classification rules say an incomplete article with the essential character of the whole is classed as the whole, so a cut that still looks like a car may be treated as one. Ask your clearing agent first. The country pages cover the markets we write for.
Can I see the engine run before I pay?
Ask in your first message. We pass the request to the yard, which decides whether it can film the engine running, and we cannot promise it. A clear video of the engine bay and the engine plate is a reasonable minimum to ask for before you commit.
How much is a half cut engine?
This page publishes no prices. A cut is priced on its engine, its condition and what is still fitted, so a person replies to each request with a quote on WhatsApp and confirms how to pay in that chat. Send the engine code first, since the code decides most of the price.
