Tyres in the UAE: what fits, what the rules say, and what it costs

A tyre is the only part of your car that touches the road, and in the UAE it is also the part the climate attacks hardest. Rubber does not wear out here so much as it ages out. Heat and oxygen break down the compound and the bond between the steel belts whether the car is driven daily or parked at Terminal 1 for three months. That is why the single most useful thing on this page is not a price list. It is the four digits stamped on your sidewall that tell you the week and year the tyre was made.

- The RTA's publicly stated position, given by Mohammed Waleed Nabhan of the RTA Licensing Agency to Gulf News on 6 October 2020, is that a tyre's lifespan is five years from the date of manufacture and that vehicles failed the technical test on that basis. In the same statement he also cited tyres that were seriously worn out or had cuts, so age is one of several tyre grounds for failure rather than a standalone criterion. No published statute, decree article or standard number establishing a five-year limit could be located.
- In a month-long Dubai field campaign in October 2020, RTA teams inspected 7,353 vehicles (3,724 of them heavy trucks), re-inspected 3,574 vehicles at testing centres and issued 128 offence tickets. The amount is not attributed here to a named law: UAE fine schedules sit in Cabinet Resolutions, and the governing statute is now Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, in force from 29 March 2025, which delegates violations and penalties to a Cabinet resolution.
- The Ministry of Interior recorded more than 37,900 tyre-related fines in 2024: Abu Dhabi 26,413, Sharjah 4,099, Dubai 3,316, Ras Al Khaimah 1,790, Ajman 1,617, Fujairah 599, Umm Al Quwain 80.
- The Ministry of Interior reported that 20 drivers across the UAE were involved in road accidents caused by tyre blowouts in 2024 — 11 in Abu Dhabi, 7 in Dubai, 2 in Ras Al Khaimah. Note the unit: 20 drivers involved, not necessarily 20 distinct accidents. Comparable 2023 reporting put tyre-burst accidents at 22.
- UAE minimum tread depth is reported as 1.6 mm for light vehicles, 2.4 mm for medium vehicles, 3.2 mm for buses and heavy trucks and 0.8 mm for motorcycles, per Gulf News's summary of the September 2012 tyre regulation. The measurement band is conventionally the central three-quarters of the tread breadth around the full circumference, not the entire width.

What the numbers on your sidewall mean
Every tyre carries its own full specification. Take a common UAE SUV size:
265/60 R18 110H
Overall diameter for that size is roughly 775 mm, which is why you cannot casually swap a 265/60 R18 for a 265/70 R18 and expect your speedometer, ABS and stability control to behave. A 265/70 R18 stands 828 mm against that 775 mm, so a 10-point change in aspect ratio on a 265 section moves rolling circumference by nearly 7 per cent, and an indicated 120 km/h becomes a real 128.
The placard on your driver's door jamb is the authority on size and pressure, not what the previous owner fitted. On UAE-market cars it usually lists two pressures: normal load and full load. If you are driving to Salalah with five people and luggage, the full-load column is the one that applies.

How to read the DOT date code and work out tyre age
This is the check almost nobody performs and the one that decides whether your car sails through its test or comes back for a second visit.
Virtually every tyre sold here carries a DOT code moulded into the sidewall. Be clear about what that is: DOT is a marking of the US Department of Transportation, applied by manufacturers globally as a matter of production practice. It is not a UAE legal requirement. UAE and GCC market access runs on the Gulf Standardization Organization technical regulations and the Gulf Conformity Mark, administered here by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology. The DOT code is useful to you anyway, because it is where the manufacturing date lives.
A full code looks like this, with the plant, size and optional manufacturer characters shown here as a generic placeholder rather than a real plant code:

The important part is the last four digits. The first two are the week of manufacture (01 to 52 or 53) and the last two are the year. So 3623 means week 36 of 2023, which is the first week of September 2023. 0126 means week 1 of 2026, the first week of January.
Converting week to month: divide the week number by 4.33. Week 36 ÷ 4.33 = month 8.3, so late August or early September. Precision is rarely needed; the year is what an inspector reads.
Where to find it, and why you often cannot. Manufacturers are only required to mould the full DOT code including the date on one sidewall, called the serial side. The other sidewall carries a partial code with the plant and size but no date. If you look at the outboard face and find a DOT code that stops before any four-digit group, you are on the wrong side. Turn the steering to full lock to see the inboard face of the front tyres, or get the car on a lift for the rears. A shop that says "there is no date on this tyre" has looked at one side only.
Practical rules when buying:
1. Photograph the date code on all four tyres before they are fitted. Once they are on the car and balanced, the argument is over.
2. A tyre sold as new should ideally be within 6 to 12 months of manufacture. This is our buying guideline, not a rule anyone enforces — no UAE regulation sets a maximum age at point of sale that we could find. Anything over two years old is being sold to you at full price with a slice of its useful life already gone.
3. Check the spare. Space savers and full-size spares sit in the boot ageing at the same rate as the tyres on the road.
4. Buy all four with the same or near-same date code so they age out together.
This is also the check that protects you from the most common tyre complaint in this market: genuinely new, genuinely unfitted, genuinely branded tyres that have been sitting in a warehouse for years, sold at a plausible discount by a shop that is counting on you not looking.

The five-year position, the RTA test and the fines
The UAE treats tyre age as a safety limit rather than a suggestion — but it is worth being precise about what that is grounded in, because most pages on this subject are not.
What is actually on the record. Speaking to Gulf News on 6 October 2020, Mohammed Waleed Nabhan, Director of Licensing Activities Monitoring at the RTA's Licensing Agency, explained that vehicles had failed the technical test "because the tyres have exceeded their lifespan of five years from the date of manufacturing." That is the clearest official statement we have been able to locate.
Two honest caveats, and we would rather you had them than not.
First, age was not the only ground for failure in that same statement. Nabhan also described tyres that were seriously worn out or had cuts. Five years is one of several tyre-related reasons a vehicle fails, not a standalone pass/fail switch that excuses everything else. A tyre with a 2024 date code and 1.4 mm of tread still fails.
Second, we could not find a published statute, decree article, GSO standard number or RTA testing-parameters document that sets a five-year tyre expiry in terms. The five-year figure rests on RTA officials' public statements and consistent repetition by the trade. We think it is sound advice regardless — the underlying chemistry, covered in the next section, does not care whether anyone wrote it down — but you should know it is a stated position and observed test practice rather than a statute we can cite.

Treat the amount as the reported figure, and check the official fines list before relying on it.
Enforcement is real, whatever its legal plumbing. What else fails a vehicle on tyres: tread below the legal minimum; sidewall cracking, cuts exposing cord, or bulges; mismatched sizes across an axle; visibly incorrect inflation; and an old date code.
What this means for your buying decision. If you are 18 months from your next registration renewal and your tyres are four years old, you are not choosing between replacing now and replacing later. You are choosing between replacing now and replacing after a failed test, a re-test fee and a second trip.

Why heat ages a tyre that is standing still
The failure mode people picture is a tyre wearing thin. The failure mode that actually kills tyres in the Gulf is thermo-oxidative ageing: oxygen reacting with the rubber, accelerated by heat, attacking the thin layer of rubber that bonds the two steel belts together.
As that skim and wedge rubber oxidises, crosslink density and stiffness go up, while peel strength and elongation-to-break go down. The rubber gets harder and more brittle, and the belts get worse at staying stuck to each other. Eventually a belt lets go under load and heat, and the result is a tread separation at speed rather than a slow puncture.
The measured evidence, and it is unusually good. NHTSA's tyre ageing programme retrieved tyres from service in Phoenix, Arizona in spring 2003 and compared them against tyres from cooler regions; Phoenix was selected precisely because high average and maximum temperatures correlate strongly with tyre failure rates. Field ageing was fastest in hot climates such as Phoenix and slowest in cool ones such as Detroit.
The most useful number from that work is the chemistry, not the geography. Below 70°C, the rate of property change fits an Arrhenius relationship with an activation energy of about 69 kJ/mol — consistent with diffusion-limited oxidation. Run the arithmetic on that and a 10°C rise in operating temperature multiplies the ageing rate by roughly 2.4 times. The same researchers (Bauer et al., 2007) calculated that six years of tyre ageing in Phoenix service can be reproduced in about ten weeks in a 70°C oven.
Apply that to Dubai. July mean overnight minima here sit around 29 to 31°C against roughly 27°C in Phoenix, with comparable daytime peaks. The daily mean temperature is what drives an Arrhenius process, and warmer nights raise the daily mean. That is the whole argument, and it is enough. We have deliberately dropped the humidity argument you will see elsewhere: NHTSA's work found ambient temperature to be the dominant external environmental factor, and humidity is not established as an ageing accelerant.

On asphalt temperature specifically
You will see 70 to 80°C quoted widely in this market. We cannot source that to a measurement — it appears in retailer marketing rather than in published data. The figure we can point at is a 2023 Sharjah cool-pavement study that measured conventional asphalt at 60°C in summer (and 47°C after raising surface albedo). Sixty degrees is quite bad enough to make the point.
That storage line is worth sitting with. Gulf News, reporting the tyre regulation the then-ESMA introduced in September 2012, described a storage cap below 25°C and a prohibition on stacking, because both accelerate ageing and deform the casing. We have not been able to confirm the current technical regulation text still carries those provisions, so treat them as reported-at-introduction rather than as a rule you can quote at a supplier. The underlying question is still a fair one to ask: where is this stock kept? A warehouse in an industrial area with a metal roof and no air conditioning is nowhere near 25°C in July.
Visible signs of an aged tyre: fine crazing or hairline cracks at the base of the tread grooves; cracking in the sidewall flex zone, often near the rim; rubber that feels hard and glassy rather than slightly tacky; a dull, greyish cast to black rubber.
By the time you can see the cracks the internal bond has been degrading for a long time. Cracks confirm the problem; their absence does not rule it out. The date code is the reliable measure.
Load index and speed rating, and why a heavy SUV changes the maths
The load index and speed rating at the end of the size are the figures people trade away to save money, and the ones that matter most on a 2.5 tonne vehicle doing 140 km/h in August.

Speed rating
Speed rating is not a speed limit for your driving. It is the speed at which the tyre has been tested to hold together for a sustained period under load. Margin above your actual speed is the whole point.

Why the heavy SUV case is different
Take an illustrative large body-on-frame 4x4 with a gross vehicle weight around 3,300 kg — a generic figure for arithmetic, not any named model's published GVW. Fully loaded that is roughly 825 kg on each tyre, and considerably more on the outside front tyre in a fast lane change. A load index of 110 (1,060 kg) leaves real margin. A load index of 103 (875 kg) does not, and the margin is what absorbs a pothole at 120 km/h, a kerb strike, or the extra load transfer when the tyre is already 20 psi low.
Now add heat. A tyre carrying 95% of its rated load, at 90% of its rated speed, on 60°C asphalt, with pressure 15% below placard, is operating with almost nothing in reserve. That combination is what a UAE summer blowout looks like from the inside.
The honest trade-off. Dropping from a V-rated to an H-rated tyre in the same size typically saves AED 60 to 150 per tyre and is usually harmless on a car that never exceeds 140 km/h. Dropping the load index to save money is a different decision, and one you should not make — not because of any insurance rule we can point to, but because load index is the structural margin itself.
Rules:
1. Never fit below the placard load index. Higher is fine.
2. Never fit below the placard speed rating unless the vehicle manufacturer explicitly permits it for a specific winter or off-road fitment.
3. Never mix load indices or speed ratings across an axle.
4. If the placard says XL, fit XL.
Tyre pressure in a UAE summer, and why bleeding hot tyres is dangerous
Pressure is free, it is the largest single lever on tyre life and blowout risk, and almost everyone in this market gets one specific thing wrong.
The physics. Air pressure in a sealed volume rises with temperature. The working rule is about 1 psi per 10°F (roughly 5.6°C), or about 2% per 10°F. In metric terms, roughly 0.1 bar per 10°C. Driving adds heat on top of ambient: a highway run in August can put 20 to 30°C into the carcass.
Worked example. You set 33 psi at 6am in October when it is 30°C. In August at 3pm, ambient is 46°C and you have just come off Sheikh Zayed Road at 120 km/h. Carcass temperature might be 70°C. That is roughly 40°C above your setting temperature, so about 7 psi higher, and the gauge reads 40 psi.
What you must not do is let air out. That reading is correct and expected. If you bleed it back to 33 psi hot, then at dawn the next morning at 33°C the same tyre reads about 26 psi, which is roughly 20% below placard. Underinflation is the dangerous state, not overinflation:
A low tyre flexes more through the sidewall on every revolution
Flexing generates heat
Heat softens the rubber and stresses the belt bond
The belt bond is already degraded by several UAE summers
The result is a tread separation, usually at speed, usually in the outer lane
Should you inflate above placard in summer? No. The placard figure is a cold figure and the manufacturer already accounted for the tyre heating up. Adding 4 psi "for the heat" over-inflates the tyre cold, wears the tread centre, reduces contact patch and makes the ride harsher, and it is fixing a problem that does not exist.
TPMS. Direct systems read pressure from a sensor in each wheel; indirect systems infer it from wheel speed differences and are less useful. Either way the warning light typically triggers around 25% below placard, which is already well into the dangerous zone. TPMS is a last-resort alarm, not a substitute for a gauge. A decent digital gauge costs AED 30 to 70 and is the cheapest safety equipment you will ever buy.
Nitrogen. Nitrogen molecules migrate through rubber slightly more slowly than oxygen, and dry nitrogen carries no water vapour, so pressure varies a little less with temperature. On a road car the real-world benefit is small. It does not exempt you from checking, and it does not make a six-year-old tyre safe. Take it if a shop includes it free; do not pay AED 15 to 25 per wheel for it as a headline service.

Tread depth, wear patterns and what they are telling you
The minimum tread depth for light vehicles in the UAE is 1.6 mm. The four category figures below come from Gulf News's summary of the tyre regulation introduced in September 2012; we could not obtain the standard text itself, and one secondary source gives 1.5 mm rather than 1.6 mm for light vehicles. We use 1.6 mm because it is far better corroborated and because it matches the depth at which tread wear indicator bars are moulded.

Where the depth is measured
We have seen "across the full width of the tread" repeated widely, including in an earlier version of this page. That is wrong, and it is stricter than any tread-depth law we are aware of. The conventional regulatory formulation, used in Europe and the GCC alike, is a continuous band across the central three-quarters of the tread breadth, around the entire circumference. Shoulder tread outside that central band is not held to the minimum. UAE reporting of the rule states only the figure and not the measurement band, so treat the band as the international convention rather than as quoted UAE text — but do not condemn a serviceable tyre because its outer shoulder is low.
How to check
Every tyre has moulded tread wear indicator (TWI) bars sitting at 1.6 mm at the base of the main grooves. Find the small triangle, the letters TWI, or the manufacturer's logo on the shoulder, follow it inward, and look at the raised bar in the groove. When the tread surface is flush with that bar, the tyre is finished. Check at several points around the circumference and across the width, because wear is rarely even. A depth gauge costs AED 15 to 40 and removes the guesswork; coin tests are unreliable with UAE coinage.

Why 3 mm deserves attention here
The 3 mm figure is a generic wet-weather guideline, not a UAE-specific finding, and we are not going to claim otherwise. What is well documented locally is the first-rain effect: after months without rain, accumulated dust, tyre rubber and oil sit on the road surface, and the first rainfall lifts that into a film that behaves like grease, with the worst of it in the first twenty to thirty minutes. Shallow tread and a greasy surface are a bad combination. If your tyres are near the limit and the forecast turns in December, do not wait.
Wear pattern diagnosis
Uneven wear is a message about something other than the tyre:

Leaking alloy rims
Leaking alloy rims are worth a specific mention, with the mechanism stated correctly. A tyre that loses pressure with no puncture to find is often leaking at the bead seat, and the cause is oxidation of the aluminium — white aluminium oxide forming between the bead and the rim and lifting the seal. It is driven by moisture and oxygen, and it is frequently started by a fitting machine nicking the rim's protective coating. Coastal humidity is the relevant local factor; dust and heat, contrary to a lot of local advice, are not the drivers. We have no data on how common this is in the UAE specifically. Either way, having the bead seat cleaned at every tyre change is cheap and sound.
Punctures: what can be repaired safely and what cannot
"Tyre puncture repair near me" is one of the highest-volume searches in this market, and much of what gets sold under that name is not a repair at all. It is a get-home measure sold as a permanent one.
There is no UAE-specific published tyre repair standard that we could find. The criteria below are industry practice from the US Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA) and the Tire Industry Association, which is what reputable shops here work to. Gulf News's summary of the 2012 UAE regulation does say tyres exceeding specified puncture or tread-wear limits may not be repaired, which is consistent in spirit, but it is not the same published rule.
A puncture is repairable only if all of these are true:
1. The injury is in the crown — USTMA defines this as the centre of the tread, roughly 25 to 38 mm in from each shoulder. Damage in the shoulder or anywhere on the sidewall is not repairable.
2. The hole is 6 mm (1/4 inch) in diameter or smaller for a passenger or light truck tyre through load range E.
3. The tyre was not driven on while flat. Even 2 km at low pressure on hot asphalt can shred the inner liner.
4. There is no existing improper repair. USTMA's position is that a tyre carrying one must be scrapped.
5. Remaining tread is above 1.6 mm. Repairing a worn-out tyre is money wasted.
6. The tyre is not so old that you will be replacing it shortly anyway.
7. There is no bulge, cut to cord, or sidewall crazing anywhere.
Never repairable: sidewall punctures, shoulder punctures, cuts longer than 6 mm, bulges, tyres run flat, and in most manufacturers' policy, run-flat tyres that have been driven at zero pressure.
Why demounting matters more in the UAE than almost anywhere. USTMA requires the tyre to be removed from the wheel so the inside can be fully inspected — and that inspection, not the patch, is what you are paying for. If you drove even a short distance on a soft tyre at 45°C ambient, the inner liner can be scuffed to powder while the outside looks perfect. A roadside plug fitted over that damage puts a car back on a 120 km/h road with a compromised casing.
Typical UAE prices (market ranges compiled from UAE retailer listings, not quotes): roadside external string plug AED 30 to 60; proper demount, internal inspection, combination plug-patch and rebalance AED 80 to 150; mobile call-out surcharge AED 30 to 100 depending on time and emirate.
A note on sealant cans and inflator kits. Modern cars increasingly ship with a bottle of sealant instead of a spare. Sealant works on small tread punctures, is useless on a sidewall, and coats the TPMS sensor and the inside of the tyre with goo that many shops will charge extra to clean, or will refuse to repair afterwards. Treat it as a way to reach a shop, and tell the shop you used it.

Run-flat tyres, and who should not buy them
Run-flats have reinforced sidewalls stiff enough to carry the car with no air in the tyre. Michelin publishes up to 80 km at up to 80 km/h at zero pressure for its Zero Pressure range, and that is the figure most commonly quoted across the category — but it is a manufacturer specification, not an industry standard, and it varies by maker and by tyre. Check yours.
They are factory fitment on most modern BMWs, some Mercedes and Mini models, and a scattering of others. The reason is packaging: a car with run-flats does not need a spare wheel, which frees boot space and removes 15 to 25 kg.
The advantages are real. A blowout at speed on a run-flat is a far less violent event than on a conventional tyre, and in a market where a summer roadside tyre change means standing on scorching asphalt beside fast traffic, not having to change a wheel at all is worth something.
Switching to conventional tyres. It is legal and common, and it saves money and improves ride quality. But be honest about what you are taking on:
You must carry a spare wheel or an inflator and sealant kit, and many BMW boots have no spare well
A working TPMS becomes essential, because a conventional tyre going soft on a run-flat car gives you no warning at all
Fit all four. Mixing run-flats and conventional tyres gives the car two different sidewall stiffnesses and unpredictable behaviour in an emergency
Who should not buy run-flats: anyone doing high mileage on a budget, anyone with a car whose run-flat size is scarce here, and anyone who values ride comfort on Dubai's speed-hump-heavy residential roads. Who should keep them: drivers who regularly cross long empty stretches of the E11 or E611 alone, and anyone who genuinely will not be changing a wheel by the roadside.

Rotation, balancing and alignment
These three are sold as a bundle and are three different jobs.
Rotation evens out wear by moving tyres between positions. Front tyres on a front-drive car do steering, most braking and all traction, and wear roughly twice as fast as the rears.
An easy anchor: rotate at every second oil change. Done consistently it evens out wear across the set, and it also means someone looks at all four tyres and the date codes twice a year.

Balancing and alignment
Balancing corrects weight distribution around the wheel. An imbalance of as little as 5 to 10 grams becomes a visible vibration above 100 km/h. Steering-wheel shake usually points to the front wheels, seat or floor shake to the rears. Rebalance at every rotation, after every puncture repair, and any time a vibration appears. Balancing weights fall off, especially the stick-on type on hot alloy wheels, so a vibration that arrives suddenly is often a lost weight rather than anything serious.
Alignment sets the geometry: toe (are the wheels pointing straight ahead), camber (are they leaning) and caster. It does not fix a vibration. It fixes pulling, off-centre steering and rapid uneven wear.
Local triggers for alignment. Speed humps in Dubai and Sharjah residential areas, construction-zone road joints and temporary diversions, kerb strikes in tight parking structures, unpaved edges and gravel shoulders on the outer emirates roads, and any desert or wadi trip are all routine sources of alignment drift and kerb-strike sidewall damage here. We are describing a plausible and well-understood mechanism, not a ranked cause: we have found no study quantifying speed-hump density or attributing UAE alignment damage to it, so we are not going to tell you it is the dominant cause.
Toe out of specification by even 1 mm across an axle scrubs the tread sideways on every metre travelled. Aim for alignment every 10,000 km, after any significant impact, and always after suspension or steering work.
The honest caveat: alignment on a car with worn ball joints, tie rod ends or bushings is money wasted, because the geometry will not hold. A good shop checks for play first and tells you. A bad shop takes the AED 200 and hands you a printout. Ask to see the before-and-after figures against the manufacturer's specification, not just green ticks.
Buying used tyres in the UAE: the honest position
The used-tyre trade is visible here, concentrated in Sharjah's industrial areas. Two things about it are worth stating precisely, because most write-ups get the law wrong in both directions.
First, the legal position — and exactly what it covers. Under the tyre regulation that came into force in September 2012, the sale of tyres once removed from a vehicle is not permitted in the local market, regardless of condition. Retreading is permitted only through certified retreaders and, as reported, only for heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks; importing retreaded tyres is not allowed.
Crucially, export of used tyres IS allowed under that same law. If you read elsewhere that used tyres are being sold in Sharjah "locally and for export, despite the ban," that is wrong on the export half — only local resale is prohibited. Gulf News reported used tyres being sold openly in Sharjah despite the ban, but that reporting dates from around 2013 and we cannot tell you it describes the market in 2026. The regulator has also changed name since: ESMA was merged into the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MOIAT) in July 2020, so anyone citing "ESMA rules" today is citing a body that no longer exists under that name.
Second, the economics look better than they are.
What you cannot see in a used tyre:
Its date code may be from a market where it was still legal to use and is already past what the RTA will accept
Whether it was ever run flat, which shreds the inner liner invisibly
Whether it took a pothole or kerb impact that broke internal cords
Whether it has an existing plug or a badly placed repair
How and where it was stored, and at what temperature
All five of those are precisely the failure modes that produce a blowout rather than a slow leak.
The realistic exception. If you have a flat, no spare, and you need to move the car a short distance to a proper shop, a matched used tyre in the correct size is a pragmatic stopgap. Check the date code even then, drive slowly, and replace it. That is a different decision from putting four used tyres on a family car for the school run to Al Ain.
Related trap: "zero km" and "showroom takeoff" tyres. These are a genuine category. Cars get new wheels fitted at the dealer and the original tyres come off with almost no mileage. Those tyres can be a real bargain. The check is identical: read the date code. A takeoff from a 2022 car is a 2021 or 2022 tyre and is nearly at the five-year mark no matter how new it looks.

Brand tiers, OE codes and what the shop vocabulary actually means
Walk into a parts shop in Deira or Sharjah's Industrial Area and you will be asked whether you want genuine, commercial, or copy. For body panels and mechanical parts those words carry a clear and important meaning. For tyres they are shop-floor shorthand with no formal or published definition — UAE retailers publicly advertise in the language of genuine, OEM and aftermarket instead. We are not going to give you a neat translation table for a vocabulary we cannot source, and you should be sceptical of pages that do.
What you can actually verify on a tyre, in about thirty seconds, is far more useful than which word the counter used:

Who should and should not buy premium tyres
Who should not buy premium tyres. If your car does under 12,000 km a year, mostly in city traffic, your tyres will reach five years old with more than half their tread remaining. In that case the wear rating you paid extra for is money burned. A good mid-tier tyre with a current date code, replaced on schedule, is the better decision. Spend the difference on replacing them on time.
Who should buy premium tyres. Anyone regularly driving at 120 to 140 km/h on the E11 or E311, anyone with a heavy SUV carrying a family, anyone doing 25,000 km a year or more, and anyone with a powerful car where the tyres are the limiting factor. Sustained high-speed running in 48°C is exactly the condition where compound quality and casing construction stop being a marketing story.

No winter tyres, but there is a summer, and there is sand
The seasonal tyre decision that dominates European tyre content does not exist here. There is no winter tyre question in the UAE. The M+S marking on many SUV tyres is a tread-pattern claim and is irrelevant to UAE road use. All-season is simply what everybody runs.
The seasonal decision that does exist is a timing one — and this is our recommendation, not established practice. If your date code puts you in your fifth year, or your tread is heading toward 3 mm, we would replace in April or May rather than September, for two reasons we can defend: the tyre then spends its most stressful months as a fresh tyre rather than an old one, and you are not standing on the hard shoulder in August. (You will also see claims that tyre prices spike with the first heatwave and before Eid travel weeks. We have no data on that and have dropped it.)
Sand and dust. The daily effect on tyres is smaller than people assume, and it is not primarily abrasion of the tread. The real UAE non-heat hazards are:

Dune driving pressures
Deflating spreads the contact patch and lets the tyre float rather than dig. The ladder below runs by surface firmness rather than mixing firmness and moisture terms, so you can actually tell which line applies to you:
Below about 12 psi you risk debeading, where the tyre pops off the rim in a hard turn, and sidewall damage. And the rule that gets broken most: do not drive on tarmac at sand pressures. A tyre at 15 psi at 90 km/h on 60°C asphalt destroys its own sidewall and is a blowout waiting to happen. Carry a 12 V compressor, and re-inflate at the edge of the sand, not at the next petrol station 40 km away.

Every figure in this section is a typical market range compiled from UAE tyre retailer listings and comparison content, current as at August 2026. None of it comes from a supplier feed or from our own quote data, and none of it is a quote. The bands are wide because the same tyre genuinely sells at different prices across shop types — we have not measured that spread, so read the band rather than picking a midpoint.

Every figure in this section was read off a named UAE retailer's own published page on the date shown beside it. It is what one shop asked for one part on one day. It is not an average, it is not a survey, and it is not what you will be quoted. Use it to sanity-check a quote, then get the quote. These are fully fitted prices and include VAT, fitting and disposal, so they are not comparable with a parts-only price.
The retailer is PitStopArabia, an online UAE tyre seller that publishes a per-size price list and states the basis in its own words: fully fitted price includes VAT, delivery, fitting, balancing, new rubber valve and disposal of old tyres. On 2 September 2026 we read six of its size pages, chosen because they are six of the sizes this page already lists as common UAE fitments. Each page carried between 33 and 68 separate listings, so the two figures in each row below are the ends of a long list rather than a choice between two tyres.
The most useful thing in those listings is not the cheapest price on the page. It is that the same tyre, in the same size, is on sale at several prices at once. Hankook's Kinergy Eco2 K435 in 205/55 R16 appeared five times, from AED 255.53 to AED 358.18, and the dearest of the five was the listing carrying a 2026 production marking. That is the date code section of this page turning up in a price list. Fresher stock costs more and older stock is discounted, which means the discount you are being offered is sometimes simply age. Ask what the date code is before you agree the price, not after the tyres are on the car.

A single size on a single day is where the price question is actually decided, because this is the choice a buyer is really making. The size below is the most common compact sedan fitment in the UAE, and the twelve listings are a walk from the cheapest end of that page to its premium end. They are a selection, not the whole page: 46 tyres were listed in this size.
Two things are worth reading off it. The first is that the premium brands cluster at roughly twice the budget price rather than five times it, so the gap between a Tracmax and a Michelin here is around AED 230 per tyre, or about AED 920 across a set. The second is that speed rating moves the price as much as brand does. The dearest listing on that page was not in the table below at all: a Pirelli Cinturato P7 in the 91 W rating at AED 662.92, where the same model in 91 V was AED 387.66. If your placard says H or V, paying for W buys you nothing you will use.

The spread inside one 4x4 size: 265/65 R17
The same exercise on a load-index-112 SUV and pickup size, because this is where UAE buying actually concentrates and where the numbers stop looking like sedan numbers. The thirteen listings below span the full page, cheapest to dearest, out of 45.
The jump from the sedan size is the point. Nothing on this page was under AED 390, the cheapest 265/65 R17 still costs more than the cheapest 205/55 R16 by roughly AED 190 a tyre, and the dearest all-terrain listing is more than five times the cheapest sedan tyre in the section above. If you drive a pickup or a body-on-frame 4x4, a set of four is a four-figure decision at the very bottom of the market and can be over AED 4,000 at the top. That is worth knowing before you are standing at a counter with a tyre already off the car.

Where the dated observations and the market bands above disagree
This page now carries two kinds of price. The typical market bands earlier in this section were compiled in August 2026 from UAE retailer listings and comparison content without a named source, and they cover a wider slice of the market than one website does, including parts-only counter pricing. The three tables just above are single dated observations from one named retailer. We have deliberately not adjusted either to match the other, because that would destroy the only thing that makes the dated figures worth anything.
There are two places where they do not agree, and it is better that you have them than not.
First, the 14 to 15 inch band above tops out at AED 420 for a premium tyre. The dearest 195/65 R15 we saw on 2 September 2026 was a Michelin Energy XM2 Plus at AED 472.74 fully fitted, which sits above it. One fully fitted online listing is not enough to move a band compiled across the market, but it is enough to tell you the top of that band is not a ceiling.
Second, the 16 to 17 inch band above starts at AED 170 for a budget tyre, while the cheapest 265/65 R17 on the page was AED 393.12. That is less a price error than a warning about how size bands are framed. Rim diameter is not what sets the price. A 265/65 R17 is a load-index-112 tyre built for a pickup or a body-on-frame 4x4 and it has almost nothing in common with a 205/55 R16 for a Corolla beyond the number 17. Those remain the earlier compiled market ranges, they are labelled as such where they appear, and they should be treated as the weaker of the two kinds of number on this page.
How to use any of it. Take the figure for your size as a sanity check and nothing more. If a shop quotes you well under the cheapest fully fitted listing here, ask what the date code is and what the price excludes. If it quotes you well over the premium listing, ask what you are getting for it. Then get an actual quote for your actual car, because that is the only number that is yours.
Fitting and service costs
Realistic totals. A set of four mid-range tyres for a common sedan, fitted, balanced, valves and disposal included, generally lands between AED 1,300 and 2,200. A set of four mid-range tyres for a full-size SUV on 20 inch rims lands closer to AED 2,500 to 4,000. Premium fitments on large SUVs can exceed AED 6,000 for a set.
Getting the quoted price and the paid price to match. We are not going to tell you how often "free fitting" reappears as separate charges — we have no measurement of that, only competitor marketing that asserts it. What we can give you is the list of things to nail down before you agree, each of which is a real line item that exists:
1. Is the price per tyre or per set?
2. Are fitting, balancing, valves and disposal included, by name?
3. Is 5% VAT included in the number quoted? UAE practice varies on whether tyre prices are advertised inclusive or exclusive, so ask rather than assume.
4. What is the date code on the tyres you will be given? Check it yourself before fitting.
5. Is alignment included or extra?
A shop that will state a single fitted, VAT-inclusive number per tyre before touching the car is telling you something useful about how the rest of the job will go.

The one-line summary. In most climates you replace tyres when the tread runs out. In the UAE, for most drivers, the calendar runs out first. Check the date code today, write the five-year month in your phone, and plan the replacement for the spring before it.
Tyres & wheels in the UAE — what is different
- The tyre regulation introduced in September 2012 was reported to require tyres supplied to the UAE to withstand temperatures up to 50°C, to bar storage above 25°C and to prohibit stacking during storage. The current technical regulation text confirming the 25°C and no-stacking provisions could not be located, so these are reported-at-introduction rather than confirmed as in force today.
- ESMA, the authority that introduced the 2012 tyre regime, no longer exists under that name: it was merged into the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MOIAT) in July 2020. UAE and GCC market access for tyres runs on GSO technical regulations and the Gulf Conformity Mark; a common GCC conformity certificate covering new motor vehicles and tyres was established by GSO ministerial decision in October 2004.
- Since September 2012 the sale of tyres once removed from a vehicle is not permitted in the UAE local market regardless of condition. Retreading is permitted only through certified retreaders and, as reported, only for heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks; imported retreads are not permitted. Export of used tyres IS allowed under the same law — only local resale is banned.
- Gulf News reported used tyres being sold openly in Sharjah's industrial areas despite the local-sale ban; that reporting dates from around 2013 and should not be read as a description of the market today.
- NHTSA's tyre ageing programme retrieved tyres from service in Phoenix, Arizona in spring 2003 and found field ageing fastest in hot climates such as Phoenix and slowest in cool ones such as Detroit. Below 70°C the rate of property change fits an Arrhenius relationship with an activation energy of about 69 kJ/mol — roughly a 2.4-fold increase in ageing rate per 10°C. Bauer et al. (2007) calculated that six years of Phoenix service ageing can be reproduced in about ten weeks in a 70°C oven. Dubai's July mean overnight minima (about 29 to 31°C, against roughly 27°C in Phoenix) raise the daily mean temperature that drives the process. Humidity is not established as an ageing accelerant and is not part of this argument.
- A 2023 Sharjah cool-pavement study measured conventional asphalt surface temperature at 60°C in summer, falling to 47°C when surface albedo was raised from 24% to 70%. The 70 to 80°C road-surface figures circulating in this market appear only in retailer marketing and are not used here.
- The first rain of the season in the UAE lifts months of accumulated dust, rubber and oil into a slick film, with the worst of it in the first twenty to thirty minutes — a well-documented local hazard that makes shallow tread a poor bet in December.
- Speed humps in Dubai and Sharjah residential areas, construction-zone road joints and diversions, kerb strikes in tight parking structures and unpaved road edges are routine sources of alignment drift and kerb-strike sidewall damage in the UAE. No study quantifying their relative contribution exists, so this is a plausible mechanism rather than a ranked cause.
- Bead-seat slow leaks with no puncture present are caused by aluminium oxidation lifting the seal between bead and rim, driven by moisture and oxygen and often initiated by fitting-machine damage to the rim coating. Coastal humidity is the relevant local factor; dust and heat are not the drivers. Cleaning the bead seat at every tyre change is sound practice.
- Winter tyres have no use case in the UAE and the M+S marking is irrelevant to local road use. Replacing an ageing set in April or May rather than September is this page's recommendation, on the reasoning that the tyre then spends peak summer fresh and you avoid a roadside change in August — it is judgement, not established local practice.
- Dune driving in the UAE runs by surface firmness: 18 to 20 psi for firm, wet or coastal sand; 15 to 18 psi for general dry dune sand; 12 to 15 psi for deep or very soft sand at low speed. Re-inflation to road pressure before returning to tarmac is essential.

- How do I check what year my tyre was made?
- Find the DOT code on the sidewall and read the last four digits. The first two are the week, the last two are the year. 3623 means week 36 of 2023, roughly early September 2023. If you find a DOT code that stops before any four-digit group, you are looking at the wrong sidewall: the full code with the date is only required on one side, called the serial side. Turn the steering to full lock to see the inboard face of a front tyre, or put the car on a lift for the rears. DOT is a US Department of Transportation marking that manufacturers apply globally; it is not a UAE legal requirement, but virtually every tyre sold here carries one.
- Is there really a five-year tyre rule in the UAE?
- There is a clearly stated RTA position, and it is worth knowing exactly what it rests on. Speaking to Gulf News on 6 October 2020, Mohammed Waleed Nabhan of the RTA's Licensing Agency said vehicles had failed the technical test "because the tyres have exceeded their lifespan of five years from the date of manufacturing." We could not find a published statute, decree article or standard number that sets a five-year limit in terms, so treat it as the RTA's stated position and observed test practice rather than a law we can cite. Note too that in the same statement Nabhan described tyres that were seriously worn out or had cuts — age is one of several tyre grounds for failure, not a standalone criterion. The safety case stands on its own: rubber in this climate degrades on a clock, not a kilometre counter.
- What is the minimum legal tread depth in the UAE?
- 1.6 mm for light vehicles, with 2.4 mm for medium vehicles, 3.2 mm for buses and heavy trucks and 0.8 mm for motorcycles. These figures come from Gulf News's summary of the tyre regulation introduced in September 2012 rather than from the standard text. The conventional way this is measured internationally is a continuous band across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the full circumference — not the entire width, which is stricter than any tread-depth law we are aware of. The tread wear indicator bars moulded into the main grooves sit at 1.6 mm, so when the tread is level with the bar the tyre is finished.
- What is the fine for driving on worn tyres?
- It is widely reported as AED 500, four black points and a seven-day vehicle impound — Khaleej Times, 27 May 2025, citing Ministry of Interior data. We deliberately do not attribute that amount to a named law: UAE fine schedules sit in Cabinet Resolutions, and the governing statute is now Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024, in force from 29 March 2025, which delegates penalties to a Cabinet resolution. Check the official fines list before relying on the figure. The Ministry of Interior recorded over 37,900 tyre-related fines in 2024, more than 26,000 of them in Abu Dhabi.
- My tyres read 40 psi in the afternoon. Should I let air out?
- No, and this is the most dangerous common mistake in this market. Pressure rises about 1 psi per 5.6°C, and driving adds 20 to 30°C on top of ambient. A tyre set to 33 psi cold will legitimately read 40 psi hot in August. If you bleed it to 33 hot, it will be around 26 psi at dawn, roughly 20% underinflated. Underinflation causes flexing, flexing causes heat, and heat on an already-aged carcass is what causes blowouts. Always set pressure cold.
- When is a tyre cold enough to check?
- After the car has been parked at least three hours, or driven under 2 km at low speed. Early morning before the sun is on the car is ideal. Check every two weeks in summer, and include the spare.
- Should I inflate above the placard pressure in summer?
- No. The placard number is already a cold-pressure figure and the manufacturer accounted for the tyre heating up in service. Adding a few psi for the heat over-inflates the tyre, wears the tread centre, reduces the contact patch and stiffens the ride, and solves nothing.
- Can a sidewall puncture be repaired?
- No. Under USTMA guidance, repairs are confined to the crown — the centre of the tread, roughly 25 to 38 mm in from each shoulder. Shoulder and sidewall damage cannot be safely repaired because the sidewall flexes on every wheel revolution and no patch will survive that. A sidewall bulge is also unrepairable: it means an internal cord has broken and the tyre should be replaced immediately.
- Is a roadside plug a proper repair?
- No. USTMA's position is that a plug alone is an unacceptable repair, and that a tyre must be removed from the wheel so the inside can be fully inspected. An external string plug fitted without demounting does not seal the inner liner properly and, critically, means nobody has looked inside the tyre. If you drove even a short distance on the flat in UAE heat, the liner may already be shredded and invisible from outside. The recognised permanent repair is a combination plug-patch fitted after an internal inspection.
- How big a puncture can be repaired?
- Up to 6 mm (1/4 inch) in diameter for a passenger or light truck tyre through load range E, and only in the crown area. The tyre must also not have been driven on while flat, must carry no existing improper repair, and must still have legal tread. There is no UAE-specific published repair standard we could find; these are USTMA and Tire Industry Association criteria, which is what reputable shops here work to.
- Can run-flat tyres be repaired?
- Major manufacturers advise against repairing a run-flat that has been driven at zero pressure, because the internal structure may be damaged in ways that cannot be verified after the fact. That position is summarised across the industry rather than issued as one common bulletin, so check your own tyre maker's guidance. If you got the puncture and stopped immediately without driving on it, some shops will repair it, but the safe assumption is a replacement.
- How far can I drive on a run-flat with no air?
- Michelin publishes up to 80 km at up to 80 km/h at zero pressure for its Zero Pressure range, and that figure is quoted widely across the category. It is a manufacturer specification rather than an industry standard and varies by maker and by tyre, so check yours. Exceeding either limit rapidly destroys the sidewall.
- Is it legal to buy used tyres in the UAE?
- Under the tyre regulation in force since September 2012, the sale of tyres once removed from a vehicle is not permitted in the local market, regardless of condition. Retreading is permitted only through certified retreaders and, as reported, only for heavy vehicles such as buses and trucks; imported retreads are not allowed. - How often should I rotate my tyres?
- Every 8,000 to 10,000 km, or at every second oil change. Front-drive cars go forward-straight and rear-cross; rear-drive and 4x4 go rearward-straight and front-cross. Directional tyres can only move front to back on the same side. Staggered setups with wider rear tyres cannot be rotated front to rear at all.
- Do I need wheel alignment every time I fit tyres?
- Not automatically, but it is worth doing if the old tyres showed uneven wear, if the car pulls or the steering wheel sits off-centre, or if you have hit a kerb or a bad joint since the last one. Aim for alignment every 10,000 km. One caveat: alignment on a car with worn ball joints or bushings will not hold, so a good shop checks for play before selling you the job.
- How much does it cost to fit tyres in the UAE?
- As typical market ranges rather than quotes: mounting AED 20 to 50 per tyre, balancing AED 20 to 50 per tyre, a new valve stem AED 5 to 15, and old tyre disposal AED 5 to 25 (that last band is weakly sourced and we could not confirm whether any emirate mandates a disposal levy). Wheel alignment for all four wheels is usually AED 120 to 350. Ask specifically whether the quoted tyre price includes all of these and whether 5% VAT is in the number, because UAE practice varies on inclusive versus exclusive pricing.
- What does a tyre actually cost in the UAE right now?
- It depends entirely on the size, and the only honest answer is a figure with a date on it. On 2 September 2026 we read PitStopArabia's own published per-size price lists. In 205/55 R16, a common compact sedan size, listings ran from AED 205.30 for a Tracmax X Privilo TX5 to AED 435.79 for a Michelin Primacy 5. In 265/65 R17, a pickup and 4x4 size, the cheapest was AED 393.12 for a Zeetex SU6001 eco and the dearest AED 1,081.50 for a BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO3. Observed at pitstoparabia.com on 2 September 2026. One retailer on one day, not a market survey, and not a quote. Fully fitted there means VAT, delivery, fitting, balancing, a new rubber valve and disposal of the old tyres are included, so none of those figures is comparable with a parts-only price from a counter.
- Do I need winter tyres in the UAE?
- No. There is no winter tyre requirement or use case here. The M+S marking found on many SUV tyres describes tread geometry and has no relevance to UAE road conditions. The seasonal decision that matters is timing, and this is our recommendation rather than established practice: if your tyres are approaching five years old, replace in April or May so the tyre spends peak summer as a fresh tyre and you are not changing a wheel on the hard shoulder in August.
- Is nitrogen worth paying for?
- Marginally at best on a road car. Nitrogen migrates through rubber slightly more slowly and carries no water vapour, so pressure varies a little less with temperature. It does not remove the need to check pressures, and it does nothing for an aged tyre. Take it if a shop includes it free; do not pay a premium per wheel for it.
- What tyre pressure should I use for driving on sand?
- Run the ladder by surface firmness: 18 to 20 psi for firm, wet or coastal sand; 15 to 18 psi for general dry dune sand; and 12 to 15 psi only for deep or very soft sand at low speed with experience. Below about 12 psi you risk the tyre debeading off the rim. Re-inflate to your normal road pressure at the edge of the sand, not at the next petrol station. Driving at sand pressures on hot tarmac destroys the sidewall.
- What does XL or Reinforced mean on a tyre?
- Extra load. The tyre has a stronger casing and a higher inflation ceiling, allowing it to carry more weight at a given size. It is commonly specified on heavy SUVs and EVs. If your door placard calls for XL, never replace it with a standard-load tyre, and never fit a lower load index than the placard specifies.
- Why do tyres age faster in the UAE even when the car barely moves?
- Because the mechanism is chemical, not mechanical. Oxygen reacts with the rubber that bonds the steel belts together, and heat accelerates that reaction. NHTSA's tyre ageing research found the rate of property change below 70°C fits an Arrhenius relationship with an activation energy of about 69 kJ/mol, which works out at roughly a 2.4-fold increase in ageing rate for every 10°C rise.
