Your cooling system is the only thing standing between a normal drive and a repair bill in the thousands. A petrol engine turns roughly a third of the energy in its fuel into motion. Most of the rest leaves as heat β€” a large part out of the exhaust, and a substantial share through the coolant. Published engine energy balances put the coolant's share anywhere from about 17 to 30 percent depending on engine type, fuel and load, so there is no single honest number to quote. What is not in doubt is that it is a great deal of heat, that it has to go somewhere, and that in Sharjah in August, in traffic, with the AC on maximum and the air over the tarmac well above 45Β°C, the margin for it to go somewhere is close to zero.

  • Dubai's average daily maximum in July and August is roughly 40-42C on the coast; 45-48C are hot-day peaks and the highest readings are inland. The National Center of Meteorology recorded 51.8C at Sweihan on 1 August 2025, reported by Gulf News as the highest August figure since 51.4C at Mezaira in 2017, and the national all-time record is 52C at Al Yasat Island, Abu Dhabi, in 2010 (NCM records run from 2003). With coolant near 100C, moving from 20C ambient to 48C ambient cuts a radiator's working temperature difference by roughly a third, so the same core sheds far less heat.
  • The AC condenser sits directly in front of the radiator and the compressor runs near-continuously through the long UAE summer, pre-heating the air before it reaches the radiator core. A car whose gauge rises when the AC is switched on has no cooling headroom left. We cannot rank how common that presentation is - no data exists - but the mechanism is straightforward and the symptom is unambiguous.
  • Topping up with plain water instead of coolant is something garages here see constantly (a trade observation, not a measured figure). The physics is not in doubt: it costs 6-8C of boiling headroom (100C vs 106-108C unpressurised, ~121C vs ~125-129C under a 0.9 bar cap), removes all corrosion inhibition between the aluminium, iron, copper and steel in the engine, removes water pump seal lubrication and cavitation protection, and deposits mineral scale in radiator tubes and heater core.
  • Fine desert dust packs into the narrow gap between AC condenser and radiator - typically somewhere around 10-20 mm depending on the platform, not a fixed dimension - and workshop experience is that it sets hard after wash-and-dry cycles. A visually clean grille tells you nothing. Cleaning must be done from the engine side outward at low pressure; a close-range pressure washer folds the fins flat and permanently reduces core surface area.
  • Coastal humidity and salt accelerate aluminium radiator fin corrosion: salt-spray testing of heat exchangers shows aluminium fins losing on the order of 12 percent of capacity after 96 hours where copper loses around 2 percent.
  • GCC-specification vehicles are widely reported across the UAE trade to carry larger radiator surface area, higher-capacity cooling fans, stronger AC systems and better dust sealing than non-GCC-spec imports. Those reports come from dealers and importers rather than manufacturer specification sheets. The relevant import population is US-spec and Japanese export-spec left-hand-drive parallel imports - not genuine right-hand-drive JDM cars, which the RTA does not register for normal road use (RHD registration was halted GCC-wide, converted cars included, with narrow classic-plate exceptions). What the cooling system is and what each part does

The cooling system is a pressurised, sealed loop that moves liquid coolant through passages cast into the engine block and cylinder head, out to a heat exchanger in the airflow at the front of the car, and back. It has two jobs, not one: shed heat when the engine is hot, and get the engine up to temperature quickly and hold it there. An engine running too cold wears faster, burns more fuel and dilutes its oil with unburnt fuel. The target for most modern petrol engines is a coolant temperature of roughly 88–105Β°C, held steady β€” a typical range across modern petrol engines rather than a figure that applies to every model.

Every part below exists to serve one of those two jobs. When customers say "my radiator is gone," the radiator is often not the failed part at all. Pump, thermostat, cap, hose, fan and head gasket between them account for most of what walks into a workshop described as a radiator problem.

How the loop works, step by step

1. Cold start. The thermostat is shut. Coolant circulates only around the block and head, through a short bypass. The engine reaches operating temperature in minutes rather than tens of minutes, which matters for wear and emissions.

2. Thermostat opens. At a nominal temperature stamped on the thermostat itself β€” commonly 82Β°C, 85Β°C, 88Β°C or 90Β°C on modern petrol engines, though your car may differ β€” the wax pellet inside expands and pushes the valve open. It is not a switch: it opens progressively and is fully open some way above its nominal rating.

3. The pump drives flow. A centrifugal impeller, belt-driven or chain-driven off the engine (and increasingly electric on modern BMW, VW and Mercedes engines), pushes coolant through the block, up through the head, out of the thermostat housing and into the radiator's inlet tank.

4. The radiator sheds heat. Coolant flows through flat tubes bonded to thin aluminium fins. Air passing through the fins carries the heat away. Heat transfer here is proportional to the temperature difference between coolant and air β€” which is exactly why a 45Β°C-plus day is such a problem. With coolant near 100Β°C, going from 20Β°C ambient to 48Β°C ambient cuts that temperature difference by roughly a third, and the same core sheds correspondingly less heat.

5. Pressure raises the ceiling. As coolant heats it expands, and the cap holds that pressure in. Working from the standard coolant-manufacturer endpoints β€” a 50/50 ethylene glycol mix at roughly 106–108Β°C unpressurised and around 125–129Β°C at 0.9 bar (13 psi) β€” the arithmetic gives roughly 1.4Β°C of extra boiling point per psi of cap pressure. Figures quoted in the trade range from about 1.4 to 1.9Β°C per psi, so treat it as an order of magnitude, not a constant. Either way, a healthy cap buys the engine 20–30Β°C of headroom above its normal running temperature.

6. Fans take over at low speed. In stop-start traffic there is no ram air, so an electric fan (usually staged β€” commonly a first speed somewhere around 92–100Β°C and full speed around 100–105Β°C) or a viscous-clutch fan does all the work. Switching the AC on commands the fan on regardless of coolant temperature, because the condenser needs airflow too.

7. Coolant returns through the lower hose to the pump inlet and the loop repeats. Excess volume passes into the expansion tank and is drawn back as the engine cools.

The system fails in three ways only: not enough coolant, not enough flow, or not enough airflow. Every diagnosis on this page maps back to one of those three.

Why cars overheat in the UAE specifically

This is not the same failure profile as Europe or Japan, and the parts wear differently.

The heat itself. Be precise about what the numbers mean. Dubai's average daily maximum in July and August is roughly 40–42Β°C on the coast. Asphalt surface temperature runs far higher than shade temperature, so the air actually entering your grille in traffic is hotter than any forecast number. Rubber, plastic and coolant additives all age on an exponential curve with temperature, which is why the peaks matter more than the averages.

The AC condenser is the aggravating factor nobody mentions. The AC condenser sits directly in front of the radiator. Through the long summer the compressor runs almost continuously, and everything it removes from the cabin plus the work the compressor does goes into that condenser. The air reaching the radiator core has therefore already been pre-heated. A car that cools perfectly with the AC off can creep towards the red with it on. We cannot honestly claim this is the single most common presentation of a marginal cooling system here β€” nobody publishes that data β€” but it is one of the clearest, and if your gauge rises when you turn the AC on, the system is already at its limit.

Dust and sand. Fine airborne dust packs into the narrow gap between condenser and radiator β€” typically somewhere around 10–20 mm depending on the platform, not a fixed dimension β€” and workshop experience here is that after a wash-and-dry cycle it sets like a felt mat. A visually clean grille tells you nothing, because the blockage is in a sandwich you cannot see from the front. Cleaning must be done from the engine side outward, with low-pressure air or water, never a pressure washer at close range, which folds the fins flat and makes things worse.

Imports. GCC-specification cars are widely reported across the UAE trade to be built for this: larger radiator surface area, higher-capacity cooling fans, stronger AC systems and better dust sealing. Those reports come from dealers, importers and market commentary rather than from manufacturer specification sheets, so treat the direction as well established and the detail as unconfirmed. What follows practically is solid: cars specified for milder markets can be permanently marginal here, and the parts are not always interchangeable. Note that this is about non-GCC-spec parallel imports β€” typically US-spec or Japanese export-spec left-hand-drive cars β€” not genuine JDM cars. Genuine Japanese-domestic vehicles are right-hand drive, and the RTA halted registration of right-hand-drive vehicles, including cars converted from RHD, on GCC-wide safety grounds, with only narrow classic-plate exceptions. There is no meaningful population of RHD JDM daily drivers on UAE plates.

Traffic patterns. Long idles at Dubai and Sharjah junction lights, then sustained 120–140 km/h runs, then another idle. Both extremes load the cooling system: idle removes ram air, high speed multiplies the heat produced.

Short life on rubber and plastic. Published guidance elsewhere puts radiator hose life at roughly four to ten years, with OEM hoses on newer cars sometimes quoted at the upper end. In this heat, inspect from year four and expect to replace nearer the bottom of that range than the top. Plastic radiator end-tanks that survive a decade and a half in a temperate market commonly crack here well before that.

Coolant chemistry: IAT, OAT, HOAT and why mixing is not harmless

Coolant is not "antifreeze" in this market. Freeze protection is irrelevant in the UAE. What you are buying is boil-over protection, corrosion inhibition, cavitation protection for the water pump, and lubrication for the pump seal. All four of those come from an additive package that has a finite life.

The base is almost always ethylene glycol (sweet-tasting and toxic β€” keep it away from children and animals; a spill in a shared car park is a genuine hazard) or, less commonly, propylene glycol. What separates coolant types is the inhibitor chemistry.

The colour means nothing. This is worth repeating because it drives more damage than any other misconception. There is no industry standard tying colour to chemistry. Green can be IAT or OAT depending on manufacturer. Pink can be Toyota's OAT-based SLLC or a HOAT product. Buy on specification β€” the manufacturer approval printed on the bottle β€” not on the colour of the liquid.

Mixing types is not neutral. Combine an OAT coolant with a silicate-bearing IAT and the organic acids and inorganic inhibitors can react, dropping out as a gel that clogs the heater core and the narrow radiator tubes. Even when it does not gel visibly, mixing generally destroys the long-life property. Toyota's own guidance is not to mix its pink SLLC with older red LLC; technical write-ups and owner documentation report that the practical effect is a reversion to the shorter service interval, though we have not read a Toyota technical service bulletin stating that in those words. If you do not know what is in the system, do a full drain and refill with the specified product rather than topping up and hoping.

Why topping up with water is the most expensive habit in the UAE

This deserves its own section. Garages here see water-filled systems constantly β€” we have no survey, warranty study or workshop dataset to size how common it is, so treat "very common" as a trade observation rather than a measured figure. What is not a matter of opinion is what it does.

The reasoning people use is not stupid: it never freezes in the UAE, so why pay for antifreeze? And, awkwardly, one half of the argument is technically correct β€” plain water genuinely transfers heat better than a 50/50 glycol mixture. Water has a specific heat capacity of about 4.18 kJ/kgΒ·K against roughly 3.4 for a 50/50 mix, and better thermal conductivity too. If heat transfer were the only variable, water would win.

It is not the only variable, and the other four all point the other way.

1. Boiling point. Unpressurised, water boils at 100Β°C and a 50/50 ethylene glycol mix boils at roughly 106–108Β°C. Pressurised by a 0.9 bar (13 psi) cap, water reaches about 121Β°C and the 50/50 mix about 125–129Β°C. That difference of 6–8Β°C sounds small. It is the entire margin between a normal August traffic jam and boiling coolant forcing itself past the cap. And the moment coolant boils, it stops being a liquid at the hot spots in the cylinder head, heat transfer collapses locally, and metal temperature spikes fast enough to warp an aluminium head.

2. Corrosion protection. A modern engine contains aluminium head, aluminium or iron block, aluminium radiator, steel fasteners, copper or brass in the heater core, and a dozen rubber and plastic components. Put those dissimilar metals in an electrolyte with no inhibitors and you have a battery. Galvanic corrosion eats the softest metal β€” usually the aluminium radiator tubes and the pump housing β€” from the inside out. This is the failure mode where a radiator that looks perfect externally starts weeping from a pinhole.

3. Pump seal and cavitation. The water pump's carbon face seal relies on the coolant's additive package for lubrication. Plain water runs it dry. Separately, at the low-pressure region behind the impeller blades, water flashes to vapour and the collapsing bubbles pit the impeller and the pump housing β€” cavitation erosion. Coolant additives suppress it. Water does not.

4. Scale. Tap or bottled water deposits minerals as it evaporates and cycles. Those deposits line the inside of radiator tubes and the heater core. Mineral scale is a thermal insulator: a thin layer measurably reduces the radiator's ability to shed heat, and the effect compounds every year.

The honest exception. In a genuine roadside emergency, water in the system is better than an empty system. Adding water to get to a garage is correct. Leaving it there is not. Drain and refill with the correct coolant at the first opportunity, and treat repeated top-ups of anything as evidence of a leak rather than as maintenance.

Concentration matters too, in both directions. Going stronger than 50/50 is not safer. Pure ethylene glycol has poor heat transfer and can cause the overheating it is supposed to prevent; most manufacturers cap the mix at 60/40 or 70/30. In the UAE, 50/50 remains the right answer for almost every car because it is what the corrosion package was formulated around, and freeze protection you do not need costs you nothing extra.

Radiators: construction, plastic tanks, and why they crack in this heat

The switch from copper/brass to aluminium cores with moulded plastic end-tanks began in the 1980s β€” only around a quarter of new vehicles had aluminium radiators then β€” ran through the 1990s, with Chrysler, Toyota and Honda among the makers who stayed on copper/brass longer, and was essentially complete by the late 1990s. Today it is close to universal on passenger cars. The core and tanks are crimped together over a rubber gasket. It is light and cheap to produce, and it has one well-known weakness.

The tanks are glass-filled nylon, commonly quoted as PA66 with around 30 percent glass fibre, though the exact compound varies by manufacturer. The failure mechanism is chemical, not mechanical fatigue alone: hot coolant hydrolyses the nylon. Water and glycol penetrate the matrix and break the polymer chains, molecular weight falls, and the bond between the glass fibres and the surrounding polymer is attacked at exactly the interface where water accumulates. Thermo-oxidative ageing at the surface adds to it. Laboratory ageing studies of glass-reinforced PA66 show it losing roughly half its tensile strength after around a thousand hours in water at 100Β°C. Note what this is not: it is not plasticiser leaching out. Absorbed water and glycol actually plasticise the matrix; the embrittlement comes from chain scission and interface damage.

Add thermal cycling β€” ambient to around 105Β°C and back, twice a day, every day β€” and the tank eventually splits at a stress concentration: the neck of the inlet or outlet, a mounting boss, or the seam along the crimp. In this climate that failure commonly arrives years earlier than in a temperate market, and it usually presents as a sudden loss of a lot of coolant rather than a slow weep, which is why it strands people.

The second failure mode is external: fin corrosion and blockage. Coastal humidity and salt accelerate aluminium fin corrosion β€” salt-spray testing of heat exchangers shows aluminium fins losing on the order of 12 percent of capacity after 96 hours where copper loses around 2 percent β€” and the fins themselves are thin enough to be flattened by a careless pressure washer. Once fins are corroded away or bent shut, the core has lost surface area permanently and no cleaning restores it.

The third is internal blockage. Degraded coolant, mixed chemistries and rust from an iron block deposit solids in tubes only a few millimetres across. An infrared thermometer across the core face will show it: a healthy radiator has a smooth top-to-bottom temperature gradient of roughly 10–20Β°C, a blocked one shows cold patches.

Water pumps: how they fail and the signs that matter

The pump is a centrifugal impeller on a shaft, running in a sealed bearing, driven by the timing belt, the timing chain, the accessory belt β€” or, on a growing number of modern engines, by an electric motor with its own control module.

The three failure modes, in order of frequency:

1. Seal failure. The shaft seal weeps coolant. It escapes through a small drain in the pump housing called the weep hole, which exists precisely so that leaking coolant does not run into the bearing. A crusty coloured deposit under the pump is the classic sign. Do not try to seal a weeping pump with stop-leak β€” the weep hole is doing its job.

2. Bearing failure. The bearing whines, growls or rumbles, usually rising and falling with engine rpm rather than road speed. Left long enough, the shaft develops play, the pulley wobbles and the belt is thrown β€” which on a timing-belt engine can mean valve damage on top of overheating.

3. Impeller failure. Cheaper aftermarket pumps and some OE designs use a plastic or stamped-steel impeller. Plastic impellers can strip on the shaft, and stamped steel erodes. The symptom is the confusing one: the pump looks perfect and does not leak, but flow is gone. The engine overheats at low speed, the heater blows cold, and the upper hose may stay oddly cool.

Electric coolant pumps on modern BMW, VW and Mercedes engines fail electrically rather than mechanically. They typically throw a fault code, put the car into a reduced-power mode, and are considerably more expensive than a conventional pump.

Replacement strategy. On any engine where the pump is driven by the timing belt, replace pump and belt together β€” the labour is the overwhelming majority of the job and doing it twice is money thrown away. Timing belt intervals run from roughly 90,000 to 160,000 km depending on manufacturer; check yours rather than assuming. On chain-driven and accessory-belt pumps the pump can be done alone. Always replace the gasket or O-ring, never reuse it, and always refill with the specified coolant rather than whatever is in the workshop's drum.

Thermostats: stuck open and stuck closed are opposite problems

The thermostat is the cheapest part in the system that can destroy an engine, and it fails in two directions that produce completely different symptoms. Diagnosing which one you have takes about ten minutes.

Hoses, clamps, cap and expansion tank: the cheap parts that strand people

A large share of roadside cooling failures start with a component costing under AED 200. We do not have a breakdown dataset to put a percentage on that, so take it as the reason to check these items rather than as a statistic.

Hoses. EPDM rubber hoses age from the inside as well as the outside. Squeeze a cool upper hose: it should feel firm and springy. A hose that feels crunchy, or that has gone soft and mushy and balloons under pressure, is finished regardless of how it looks. Check specifically at the ends where the clamp bites and where the hose passes near the exhaust manifold. Replace hoses in sets when one goes β€” the others are the same age and have had the same summers.

Clamps. The factory usually fits constant-tension spring clamps for a reason: they maintain grip as rubber creeps and as the joint expands and contracts. Worm-drive clamps over-tightened onto a plastic radiator neck are a common cause of cracked necks. Do not over-torque a clamp on plastic.

The radiator cap. The most under-appreciated part in the system. It has a rated pressure β€” commonly 0.9 bar (about 13 psi) on Japanese cars, 1.1–1.4 bar on many European ones, printed on the cap face. A weak cap means the system pressure falls, the boiling point falls with it, and coolant boils at a temperature the engine would otherwise survive. The symptom is coolant loss with no visible leak and steam from the overflow. It costs very little to replace and should be treated as a service item every 4–6 years here. Never use a cap of a different pressure rating than specified: too high a rating can burst a hose or split a plastic tank.

Expansion tank. Check the level when the engine is cold, against the MIN and MAX marks. A tank that is over MAX when cold suggests combustion gases or a stuck thermostat. A tank that needs topping up more than once or twice a year has a leak, and "a bit of coolant loss is normal" is not true of a sealed system in good order.

Cooling fans and fan clutches: the part that matters most in traffic

At motorway speed, ram air through the grille does almost all the cooling and the fan is close to irrelevant. In slow traffic β€” which describes most Dubai driving between 07:30 and 09:30 β€” the fan does everything. A failed fan produces the signature UAE symptom: temperature perfectly normal on the highway, climbing towards the red in traffic, falling again as soon as you move.

Electric fans are standard on transverse-engine cars and on most modern vehicles. They usually run in stages, with a first speed commonly somewhere around 92–100Β°C and full speed around 100–105Β°C, plus an override that commands the fan on whenever the AC compressor engages. Failure can be the motor, the resistor pack or control module, the relay, the temperature sensor, or the wiring. Diagnose in that order and test the cheap items first: a fan that runs on high but not on low is almost always a resistor or module, not a motor.

Viscous fan clutches are still common on longitudinal-engine 4x4s and pickups β€” Land Cruiser, Patrol, Hilux, Ranger. A silicone-fluid coupling engages the fan progressively as the air behind the radiator heats up. They fail by leaking their fluid and slipping, which is gradual and easy to miss. Two field checks, engine off and cold: spin the fan by hand β€” it should turn with noticeable drag, not freewheel for several revolutions β€” and check for oily residue around the hub. From cold, a healthy clutch roars for a few seconds at start-up and then quietens; if it never roars again on a hot day, it is slipping.

Fan shroud. A missing or broken shroud costs a significant proportion of the fan's effectiveness by letting air recirculate around the blade tips instead of being pulled through the core. The figures repeated in workshops (a third to a half) have no primary engineering source behind them that we could find, so we will not quote one β€” but the effect is real and well understood, and shrouds get broken during other repairs and left off. If yours is cracked or absent, that alone can be the whole overheating fault.

Head gasket: what ignoring the gauge actually costs

This is the section that justifies the price of a thermostat.

A cylinder head gasket seals combustion pressure, coolant passages and oil galleries between an aluminium head and the block. Aluminium expands roughly twice as much as cast iron for the same temperature rise. When an engine overheats badly, the head expands beyond what the gasket and the head bolts can accommodate, and the head warps. Once warped, the gasket cannot seal, and combustion gas at high pressure is forced into the cooling system.

The symptoms, in the order they typically appear:

Coolant disappearing with no external leak and no puddle under the car

Bubbles rising continuously in the expansion tank with the engine running and warm

Persistent white sweet-smelling smoke from the exhaust after warm-up (not the brief morning condensation cloud)

Overheating that comes back within days of a coolant refill

Milky beige emulsion on the oil cap or dipstick, indicating coolant in the oil

Rough running or a misfire on one cylinder

Pressure building in the cooling system within a minute of a cold start

The definitive test is a combustion-leak chemical test: a sampling tube draws air from the expansion tank neck through a blue reagent that turns yellow in the presence of exhaust gas. It takes five minutes and any competent garage has one. Compression and cylinder leak-down tests confirm which cylinder.

Do not use head gasket sealant products. They can buy a few weeks in a car you are about to scrap, and they block the heater core and radiator on their way through, adding to the eventual bill.

The economics are clear. The cooling parts that would have prevented this cost AED 150–1,400. Head gasket replacement quoted by Dubai workshops in 2026 runs roughly AED 2,500–5,000 on a four-cylinder economy car such as a Corolla or Sunny, AED 3,500–7,000 on a V6, AED 4,000–10,000 on a German premium car, and beyond AED 15,000 on exotics. If the head warped it also needs machining, commonly adding several hundred to a thousand dirhams. It takes the car off the road for 3–6 days, and if the head is beyond the resurfacing limit or a liner has cracked, you are into a rebuild or a replacement engine.

What to do when the gauge climbs: a procedure worth memorising

The next two minutes determine whether this is a few-hundred-dirham repair or a four-figure one.

1. Turn the AC OFF immediately. This removes both the compressor's load on the engine and the condenser's heat load on the radiator. It is the single most effective thing you can do and it is free.

2. Turn the cabin heater ON, fan on maximum, windows down. This is deeply unpleasant in summer and it works: the heater core is a second radiator, and it can pull real heat out of the coolant. Use it to get to the hard shoulder or the next exit, not to continue your journey.

3. Get out of stop-start traffic if you safely can. Moving air is worth more than a stationary engine idling. But if the gauge is at the red, stopping beats continuing.

4. Pull over safely and switch the engine off. On UAE motorways move fully onto the hard shoulder, switch on hazard lights, and get yourself and passengers out of the car and behind the barrier. Roadside stops on fast UAE motorways are dangerous independently of your engine.

5. Do NOT open the radiator cap. A hot pressurised system will erupt as soon as pressure is released, and coolant well above 100Β°C causes serious scald injuries to face and hands. Standard guidance is a minimum of 30 minutes, and after a genuine overheat in summer heat closer to an hour, before touching any cap. If the expansion tank has a cap and the system is still hot, leave it alone too.

6. Look, without touching. Steam from the front, a soaked engine bay, a burst hose, coolant running under the car, or a snapped belt each point to a different fault and are worth photographing for the garage.

7. Call for recovery. In the summer months, a car sitting on a hard shoulder with a hot engine bay is a fire risk and an obstruction. If the temperature gauge reached the red or a warning light appeared, driving on is a gamble against a four-figure bill.

8. If you must move the car a short distance, do it only once the engine has cooled substantially, top up with plain water if that is all you have, run with the heater on full, and stop the moment the gauge climbs again. Then get the water out of the system and proper coolant in as soon as you reach a garage.

One thing not to do: do not keep driving because "it always does that in summer" and "it comes down again." A gauge that reaches the red repeatedly is not a quirk of the climate. It is a fault with a name, and the names are all cheaper than a head gasket.

Diagnosis: how a good garage finds the actual fault

Cooling faults are one of the few areas where testing genuinely beats guessing, and where parts get replaced unnecessarily because nobody tested.

Cooling system pressure test. A hand pump with an adapter replaces the radiator cap and pressurises the cold system to its rated pressure β€” typically 0.9–1.4 bar. Held for 15 minutes, the gauge should not fall. If it does and nothing is visible, the leak is internal: head gasket, heater core inside the dash, or a cracked head. The same tool tests the cap separately, and a failed cap is found here more often than most people expect.

UV dye. Fluorescent dye added to the coolant and inspected with a UV lamp after a few days of driving finds the slow weeps a pressure test can miss, particularly around water pumps and the base of plastic tanks.

Combustion-leak (block) test. The blue-to-yellow reagent test described above. Definitive for combustion gas in the coolant.

Infrared thermometer across the radiator. Scan the core face with the engine hot. A healthy radiator drops roughly 10–20Β°C smoothly from inlet to outlet side. Cold blocks indicate plugged tubes.

Voltage in the coolant. With the engine running, a multimeter's negative probe on the battery negative and positive probe in the coolant should read well under about 0.3 V β€” a standard workshop threshold rather than a manufacturer-published limit. Higher readings indicate electrolysis, usually from degraded coolant, a bad engine earth strap, or an accessory earthed through the block. Electrolysis eats aluminium radiators and heater cores from the inside and is a common cause of a "new radiator that failed in a year."

Refractometer and test strips. A refractometer reads the glycol concentration; test strips read pH and remaining inhibitor. Fresh coolant is alkaline, and the workshop rule of thumb is roughly pH 8–11 β€” again a trade convention rather than a figure we can attribute to a coolant manufacturer's datasheet. Coolant reading below pH 7 is acidic and is actively attacking your engine, regardless of how new it looks. This is the correct way to decide whether a flush is due, and it takes a minute.

Scan-tool data. Live coolant temperature from the ECU, compared against the dashboard gauge and an infrared reading, catches faulty sensors and, importantly, catches the fact that many modern dashboard gauges are damped β€” they show "normal" across a wide band and only move when the situation is already serious.

Genuine, OEM, aftermarket, commercial or used: the UAE parts vocabulary

The words used in the UAE parts trade do not always mean what a manufacturer means by them, and the price gap between them is large. Souq Al Haraj in Sharjah is the region's largest automotive market, and Sharjah has consolidated its used-vehicle and auto-parts trade there and across Industrial Areas 2–17 and Al Sajaa β€” so a great many of the cooling parts sold in this country pass through Sharjah. What share specifically is cooling parts, nobody publishes.

The percentage spreads in the table below are the rules of thumb quoted across the UAE parts trade. They are not from a published pricing study, and any given quote can sit well outside them.

What cooling work costs in the UAE

Be clear about where these numbers come from. The bands below are compiled from published 2026 price guides put out by Dubai workshops β€” that is, garages advertising their own pricing β€” not from a survey of independents that we conducted. Treat them as a starting expectation and get two or three real quotes. Agency and main-dealer pricing runs above the top of most of these bands. Three rows (radiator cap, thermostat and gasket, viscous fan clutch) are our own interpolations from the surrounding sourced figures rather than published prices, and are marked as estimates below the table.

On VAT, get this right. UAE VAT is 5%. Under Article 38 of Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, read with Article 27(1) of Cabinet Decision No. 52 of 2017, prices displayed or advertised for taxable supplies must be tax-inclusive, and failing to do so carries an administrative penalty. So a workshop that quotes you a displayed price and then adds 5% at the end is not doing it the way the law requires. Ask whether the figure you are given is inclusive before you agree to it. Ask separately whether it includes coolant, because a V8 SUV needing 12–16 litres of specified long-life coolant is a real line item.

Two things that move the price more than anything else:

Access. A water pump behind a timing cover on a transverse V6 can be 6–8 hours of labour. The same job on a longitudinal four-cylinder with a serpentine-driven pump can be 90 minutes. The part price barely changes; the bill doubles. This is also why a Land Cruiser pump can cost less to fit than a German four-cylinder pump β€” the engine bay is roomier.

Whether other work is due at the same time. If the timing belt is anywhere near its interval, do it with the pump. Doing them separately means paying the same labour twice.

Who should not buy the expensive option. If your car is a ten-year-old economy sedan with a plastic-tank radiator, a quality OEM aluminium/plastic radiator is the correct part β€” an all-aluminium welded uprated radiator costs two to three times as much, will not cool meaningfully better on a standard engine, and can be worse if its thicker core restricts airflow. Uprated cooling is for genuinely uprated loads: towing, sustained off-road work in sand, or a car making significantly more power than standard. Fixing a blocked condenser and a slipping fan clutch will do more for an overheating Land Cruiser than any radiator you can buy.

Radiator and coolant prices: what we could source, and the one figure we will not put a number on

Two tables above already carry radiator figures: the part-only column in the radiator types table, and the radiator replacement row in the cost table, which is compiled from published 2026 Dubai workshop price guides. Both stay exactly as they are, and neither is contradicted here. What this section does not do is add a fresh, dated, sourced range for the radiator itself on top of them, and the reason is worth stating plainly rather than leaving you to wonder why the newest section on the page is the one without a number in it.

We do not publish a price range for this part, and here is why. The only UAE retail prices we could source and date are for European and performance vehicles, and they run several times what the same part costs for a mainstream Japanese or Korean car. A range built on them would mislead most of the people reading this. What follows instead is what actually moves the price, and what a fair quote looks like when you get one.

That is a search result, not a shrug. On 2 September 2026 we went through the UAE parts sellers that publish prices openly rather than behind an enquiry form. partstore.ae does list radiators, but its search results carry no prices at all and the only unit identified by vehicle on that page is a Mercedes. bestautoparts.ae, searched the same day for radiators, returned no radiator units whatsoever, only coolant. A third UAE catalogue we checked returned none either. Nobody publishing openly that day was publishing a radiator price for a Corolla, a Sunny, a Tiida or a Land Cruiser, which is what most of the people reading this page are driving. A German original-equipment radiator price is not a Japanese radiator price, and presenting one as the other would be wrong in exactly the direction that costs you money in a negotiation.

So here is the useful version instead. What moves a radiator price in this market, roughly in the order it moves it:

The grade you are being quoted. Genuine in the agency box, an original-equipment brand such as Denso, Nissens or Behr in a plain box, a recognised aftermarket unit, an unbranded copy out of the Sharjah trade, or a used core pulled from a written-off car. Those five are not small differences around one number, they are five different numbers, and a quote that does not name which one it is has not told you the most important thing about itself.

What is physically in the box. Radiators are sold three ways: the bare core and tanks, the core with the fan shroud attached, and a full cooling module with the fan motors and sometimes the condenser. A quote that looks cheap next to another one is often the bare core, and the shroud and fan you assumed were included are a second line item that appears after the car is apart.

The car, not the part. An aluminium and plastic radiator for a high-volume Japanese sedan is a commodity with several suppliers competing. The same component for a low-volume European car may exist in one or two versions, at a price the agency effectively sets. This is the single largest reason a range covering both is useless to either owner.

Whether the condenser is being done at the same time. The AC condenser sits directly in front of the radiator and has to come out or be moved for many radiator jobs. If yours is damaged or blocked, doing both together costs far less than doing them a month apart, and a shop that does not look at it while the front of the car is open is leaving you a second bill.

Access hours, which the cost table above already covers, and which routinely matter more than the part.

Coolant, hoses, clamps and the cap. A radiator job with the old cap and the original hoses put back on is not finished work. Ask whether they are in the price.

What a fair quote looks like when you get one. It names the part brand and, ideally, the part number, and says whether it is genuine, original-equipment, aftermarket, copy or used. It states what comes with it, specifically whether the fan shroud and fan are included. It lists the coolant by specification and by litres rather than as a word. It prices hoses, clamps and a new cap separately so you can see whether they are being done. It gives labour hours rather than a lump. It states a warranty on the part and a separate one on the labour, in months. And it says that the system will be pressure-tested and bled after the fill, because an unbled cooling system on a modern engine can overheat with a brand new radiator in it.

A quote that is far below the others is usually quiet about four things: which grade of part it is, whether the shroud is included, whether the coolant is the specified type or a generic drum, and whether anything is being pressure-tested afterwards. Ask those four questions and the cheap quote either becomes a real one or stops being cheap.

There is one part of this system we can price today with a named source and a date, and it is the part that gets left off quotes most often.

Every figure in this section was read off a named UAE retailer's own published page on the date shown beside it. It is what one shop asked for one part on one day. It is not an average, it is not a survey, and it is not what you will be quoted. Use it to sanity-check a quote, then get the quote.

What those coolant prices tell you, and what they do not

Read the table above with the pack size, never the shelf price. The Toyota one-litre listing at AED 75.44 sits four times higher per litre than the same seller's five-litre Toyota pack at AED 91.92, and that is not an error in our reading. It is the ordinary shape of a parts shelf, where a small pack is a top-up convenience and a large pack is the thing you buy for a job. If a shop quotes you a coolant line and does not say how many litres it covers, the quote is incomplete.

Note also what the listing does not say. It does not state a VAT basis. As set out above, UAE law requires displayed and advertised prices for taxable supplies to be tax-inclusive, so ask rather than assume, and ask before you agree rather than at the counter.

Now put it against the capacity of your engine. Using the figures earlier on this page, a four-cylinder holds roughly 5 to 7 litres, a V6 roughly 8 to 11, and a large V8 SUV such as a Land Cruiser or Patrol 12 to 16. At the Toyota five-litre price observed above, that V8 SUV is three packs, which is our arithmetic and comes to about AED 276 of coolant before a single hour of labour. That is the line that gets quietly left out of a cheap flush quote, and it is why the question is not whether coolant is included but how many litres of which specification are included.

One last thing this table cannot do. These are manufacturer-brand coolants sold over a counter to anyone. They are not what a workshop pays, they are not what a workshop will charge you, and they say nothing at all about the price of the radiator, the pump or the fan. They are one honest, dated, checkable number on a page that is otherwise full of ranges, and the point of putting them here is that you can now check at least one line of your quote against a published price rather than against a feeling.

The number that is actually yours comes from a quote against your chassis number, because the same car in two specifications takes two different radiators. The shops listed below sell these parts, and the fastest way to a real figure is to send them the chassis number and the symptom together.

Service intervals and a UAE maintenance schedule that actually fits

Manufacturer intervals are written for a global average climate. In the UAE, the sensible approach is to shorten fluid intervals and inspect the cheap items far more often than the book suggests, because the cheap items are what strand you.

Toyota's pink Super Long Life Coolant is a useful example of how the intervals really work. Toyota's published North American schedule puts the factory fill at 100,000 miles (about 160,000 km) or ten years, with subsequent changes every 50,000 miles (about 80,000 km) or five years. Those are temperate-climate numbers, and the schedule issued by Toyota's UAE distributor may differ β€” check yours. Here, the better approach is to test the coolant with a pH strip and a refractometer at every major service and change on the reading rather than on the odometer.

One honesty note on the table below: the UAE-shortened intervals are workshop judgement, reasoned from materials behaviour and local experience. The rated intervals they are shortened from are manufacturer figures. Nobody has published a measured UAE dataset on component life, so do not treat the shortened numbers as measurements.

RTA testing, registration renewal and where cooling faults bite

Two corrections to what is commonly repeated about this, because getting it wrong sends people to a testing centre a year early.

The three-year exemption is a new-vehicle rule, not an age rule. In Dubai, a vehicle is exempt from the technical inspection for three years when it is new β€” first owner, zero mileage, bought from an authorised dealer β€” counted from the year of manufacture or the year of first registration, whichever comes first. That is not the same as "any car under three years old." A recently imported used car of the same age is not automatically covered by that wording, and if that is your situation, confirm it with the RTA rather than assuming. The roadworthiness test becomes mandatory after the three-year period has run β€” that is, at the first renewal once the exemption expires, not in year three.

Renewal is normally annual, but not always. Dubai now offers a multi-year registration renewal option, selectable during online renewal, for vehicles under five years old that have passed inspection.

Where you get tested. Testing is done at RTA-approved centres. Currently operating brands in Dubai include Tasjeel, Shamil, Wasel, Al Mumayaz, Al Mutakamela, Tajdeed, AutoPro, AG Cars, Al Jawdah, Al Yalayis and Aber. Note that the Tamam (Al Ghandi) Vehicle Testing and Registration Centre in Ras Al Khor closed permanently on 1 January 2026, with the RTA directing motorists to Al Jawdah, Al Mutakamela in Al Awir and Tasjeel in Al Awir instead. Centres open and close, so check rta.ae for the current list rather than trusting any page, including this one. Other emirates run their own arrangements through their own authorities, and we have not verified those rules per emirate β€” check locally.

Why this page cares. Active fluid leaks are consistently listed by testing centres and inspection services among the reasons vehicles are failed. Underside checks look for active drips of engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and power steering fluid, and a live coolant leak is both a road-contamination issue and clear evidence of a failing component. A weeping water pump or a cracked radiator neck that you have been topping up for months is therefore not only an engine risk; it is a registration risk with a deadline attached. We should be straight about the sourcing: that failure reason is reported by testing centres and vehicle-inspection services rather than taken from an RTA criteria document we have read, and we do not know where the line falls between tolerated seepage and a failing active drip.

Practical implications:

Fix leaks before the test, not after a rejection. Retesting costs time and money.

Clean the underside of the engine bay before the test so that old dried residue is not mistaken for an active leak β€” but do not use degreaser to hide a genuine leak, because it will still be dripping by the time the car is on the ramp.

A car that overheats at idle can fail on the associated symptoms β€” visible steam, low coolant warning lights, or an illuminated engine management light β€” as much as on the cooling fault itself. Any warning lamp on the dashboard is a common cause of rejection.

If you have just cleared a fault code, drive the car for a normal cycle before the test so that readiness monitors have reset, otherwise the diagnostic check can be inconclusive.

We have deliberately stated no fine amount and quoted no regulation text for vehicle testing. The requirement to hold valid registration is not in doubt; the exact penalties and the precise inspection criteria vary by emirate and change, and are worth confirming with the RTA or the relevant authority directly rather than trusting a parts page.

Cooling in the UAE β€” what is different

  • Component life is materially shorter here than the rated intervals assume: IAT coolant realistically 18-24 months against a rated 2 years; OAT/HOAT 3-4 years against a rated 5; radiator cap seals 4-6 years; plastic radiator end-tanks well short of the 12-15 years a temperate market sees; hoses inspected from year four against published guidance of 4-10 years. The rated figures are manufacturer data; the shortened UAE figures are workshop judgement, not a measured dataset.
  • A thermostat stuck open is largely invisible in the UAE because almost nobody uses the cabin heater, so the classic 'heater blows cold' symptom goes unnoticed for years while fuel consumption runs perhaps 5-15 percent high.
  • Dubai traffic patterns load the cooling system at both ends: long idles at junctions with no ram air, then sustained 120-140 km/h motorway running.
  • Emergency procedure adapted for here: AC off first, cabin heater on full with windows down (unpleasant in summer, and it works), pull fully onto the hard shoulder, and get occupants out and behind the barrier - roadside stops on UAE motorways are dangerous independently of the engine fault. Standard guidance is 30 minutes minimum before touching any cap, closer to an hour after a genuine summer overheat.

A quote that adds 5% at the end after showing you a displayed price is not compliant - ask whether the figure is inclusive, and ask separately whether coolant is included, because a V8 SUV takes 12-16 litres of specified long-life coolant.
  • Souq Al Haraj in Sharjah is the region's largest automotive market, and Sharjah has consolidated its used-vehicle and auto-parts trade there and across Industrial Areas 2-17 and Al Sajaa. Can I just use water instead of coolant in the UAE, since it never freezes here?
No. Freeze protection is the least important thing coolant does here. Plain water boils at 100Β°C unpressurised against roughly 106–108Β°C for a 50/50 mix, it contains no corrosion inhibitors so dissimilar metals in your engine corrode galvanically, it does not lubricate the water pump seal, and it deposits mineral scale inside the radiator and heater core. Water in an emergency to reach a garage is correct. Water as a permanent fill is how you end up with a pinholed radiator or a failed pump.
My temperature gauge only rises when the AC is on. What does that mean?
It means your cooling system has no headroom left. The AC condenser sits directly in front of the radiator, so with the compressor running the air reaching your radiator core is already pre-heated, and the compressor itself adds load to the engine. A healthy system absorbs that. If yours does not, the usual causes in order are a blocked condenser-to-radiator sandwich packed with dust, a cooling fan or fan clutch that is not working properly, coolant that has lost its additive package, or a partially blocked radiator core.
How often should I change coolant in the UAE?
Shorter than the manual says. Conventional IAT (green) coolant rated at 2 years is realistically an 18–24 month item here. Long-life OAT and HOAT coolants rated at 5 years are better treated as 3–4 years. Those shortened figures are workshop judgement rather than published data, so better still, stop guessing: test the coolant with a pH strip and a refractometer at every major service. Fresh coolant is alkaline at roughly pH 8–11, and anything reading below pH 7 is acidic and actively corroding your engine no matter what colour it is.
Can I mix different coolant colours or types?
Do not. Colour is not a standard β€” green can be IAT or OAT depending on the manufacturer, and pink can be Toyota SLLC or a HOAT product. Mixing an organic-acid coolant with a silicate-bearing one can produce a gel that blocks the heater core and radiator tubes, and even where it does not gel it destroys the long-life property. Toyota's own guidance is not to mix pink SLLC with older red LLC. If you do not know what is in the system, drain it fully and refill with the specified product.
Is it safe to open the radiator cap when the engine is hot?
No, and this causes serious burns every summer in the UAE. The system is pressurised to 0.9–1.4 bar and the coolant is above its atmospheric boiling point. Releasing that pressure makes the coolant flash to steam and erupt out of the filler at face height. Standard guidance is to wait at least 30 minutes, and after a real overheat in summer closer to an hour, before touching any cap. If you need to add fluid urgently, that is a job for recovery, not for you at the roadside.
What is the difference between a thermostat stuck open and stuck closed?
Stuck open means the engine never warms up properly: the gauge sits low, warm-up takes 15 minutes or more, fuel consumption typically rises around 5–15 percent, and a P0128 code is common. It is not an emergency. Stuck closed means coolant cannot reach the radiator at all: the gauge climbs fast, the upper radiator hose stays cold while the engine gets hot, and the engine can warp its cylinder head within minutes. Stop driving immediately if you suspect stuck closed.
How much does a radiator cost to replace in Dubai?
Published 2026 price guides from Dubai workshops put it at roughly AED 600–1,400 for an economy sedan, AED 1,600–3,800 for a German premium car, and AED 2,800–7,000 for a luxury SUV, part and labour, with the job taking anywhere from 2 to 12 hours depending on access. Those are advertised workshop figures rather than a market survey, so get two or three quotes. Confirm whether the quote includes coolant, and note that displayed prices in the UAE are legally required to be VAT-inclusive β€” ask if there is any doubt.
Why do plastic radiator tanks crack in the UAE?
The end tanks are glass-filled nylon crimped onto an aluminium core. Hot coolant hydrolyses that nylon: water and glycol penetrate the matrix, break the polymer chains and attack the bond between the glass fibres and the polymer around them, while heat cycling oxidises the surface. Ageing studies show glass-reinforced PA66 losing around half its tensile strength after roughly a thousand hours in water at 100Β°C. The tank goes brittle and splits at a stress point β€” the inlet or outlet neck, a mounting boss, or the crimp seam β€” and it usually presents as sudden major coolant loss rather than a slow weep.
Should I fit an all-aluminium or uprated radiator for the UAE heat?
For a standard car, usually not. An uprated radiator costs two to three times as much, and a thicker core can restrict airflow enough to offset the extra capacity. Uprated cooling is worth it for genuinely uprated loads: regular towing, sustained sand driving, or an engine making significantly more power than standard. For everyone else, a quality OEM radiator plus a clean condenser and a working fan will outperform an expensive core fitted to a dirty, tired system.
What does a weep hole on the water pump mean?
It means the pump's shaft seal has started to leak and the housing is draining that coolant to atmosphere rather than into the bearing. A crusty coloured deposit under the pump is the classic sign. It is a genuine warning, and it is doing its job β€” never try to seal a weeping pump with a stop-leak additive. Plan the replacement, and if the pump is timing-belt driven, do the belt at the same time because the labour is already paid for.
My car overheats in traffic but is fine on the highway. What is wrong?
That pattern points at airflow, not coolant. At motorway speed ram air does the cooling and the fan barely matters; in slow traffic the fan does everything. So the fault is almost always the electric fan, its resistor or control module, the relay, a slipping viscous fan clutch on a 4x4, a missing or broken fan shroud, or dust packed between the AC condenser and the radiator. Check the cheap items first β€” a fan that runs on high but not on low is usually a resistor, not a motor.
Are GCC-spec cars really better cooled than imported cars?
It is asserted consistently across the UAE trade β€” larger cooling capacity, stronger AC, better dust sealing β€” but those sources are dealers and importers rather than manufacturer specification sheets, so treat it as a well-established direction rather than a documented fact. It is not universal across every model and year. One thing to be clear about: this is about non-GCC-spec left-hand-drive parallel imports, typically US-spec or Japanese export-spec. Genuine right-hand-drive JDM cars are not registrable for normal road use in the UAE, so they are not the population in question. Either way, search by chassis number rather than model name, because that is the only reliable way to know which cooling parts your car takes.
How do I know if my head gasket has gone?
The usual signs are coolant disappearing with no external leak, continuous bubbles in the expansion tank with the engine warm and running, persistent sweet white exhaust smoke after warm-up, a milky beige emulsion on the oil cap, and overheating that returns within days of a refill. The definitive test is a combustion-leak chemical test at the expansion tank neck, where a blue reagent turns yellow in the presence of exhaust gas. It takes five minutes and any competent garage has the kit.

Is a used radiator or water pump from the Sharjah market a reasonable buy?
For some parts yes, for the critical ones no. A used fan shroud, fan motor assembly, bracket, or a radiator for a model no longer supplied new can be a sensible buy at a substantial discount. A used water pump is a poor bet because bearing hours are unknown and the labour to fit it is identical to the labour for a new one. A used radiator can look perfect and be internally silted. The rule that survives every case: if the labour cost exceeds the part cost, buy the part new.
What is the difference between genuine, OEM and commercial parts for cooling?
Genuine means the carmaker's own box with agency warranty. OEM means the same component from the factory that supplies the assembly line β€” Denso, Aisin, Behr/Mahle, Nissens, Valeo, Gates β€” in a plain box, and the trade rule of thumb is roughly 20–50 percent cheaper for the identical part. "Commercial" or copy parts are unbranded third-party reproductions quoted far cheaper again. Those percentages are trade convention, not a published pricing study. On cooling parts specifically, copies are a poor gamble: thin cores, weak plastic tanks, plastic impellers that strip, and caps with the wrong pressure rating. A cooling part that fails does not fail alone, it takes the head gasket with it.
Why is my coolant disappearing with no puddle under the car?
There are four common explanations. A weak radiator cap letting coolant boil out through the overflow, which is the cheapest and most overlooked. A leaking heater core, which soaks the passenger footwell carpet and fogs the windscreen with a sweet smell. A head gasket leak pushing coolant into the cylinders where it burns off as white exhaust smoke. Or a hot-side leak that evaporates completely before it drips. A cooling system pressure test distinguishes all four in about twenty minutes.
Is 50/50 the right coolant mix for the UAE, or should I use more antifreeze?
50/50 is correct for almost every car here. Going stronger is not safer: pure ethylene glycol transfers heat poorly and can cause the overheating it is meant to prevent, which is why most manufacturers cap the mix at 60/40 or 70/30. The corrosion inhibitor package is formulated around a 50/50 dilution, so drifting away from it in either direction reduces protection. Freeze protection you will never use in the UAE costs you nothing extra at 50/50.
Does a mechanical fan clutch need replacing even if the fan still spins?
Yes, and this is the failure most often missed on Land Cruisers, Patrols, Hiluxes and Rangers. A viscous clutch fails gradually by losing its silicone fluid and slipping, so the fan still turns but no longer pulls enough air. Two checks with the engine off and cold: spin the fan by hand β€” it should have noticeable drag rather than freewheeling for several revolutions β€” and look for oily residue around the hub. From a cold start a healthy clutch roars for a few seconds; if yours never roars again on a hot day, it is slipping.
