Every reaction inside a lead-acid battery, including the ones you do not want, speeds up with temperature. The industry rule of thumb is that service life halves for every 10C of sustained operating temperature above 25C. It is an approximation, normally quoted as useful between about 15C and 40C, and the temperature that matters is the sustained average rather than the peak.

That distinction is where most writing on this subject quietly falls apart. You will read that a Gulf engine bay runs at 55 to 70C and that this is why batteries last two years. Both statements cannot be true at once: a battery genuinely held at 60C year-round would not last two years, it would last months. What actually happens is that the case gets very hot for a few hours a day in summer, cools overnight, and the country has a mild half of the year. The observed 24 to 36 month outcome implies a sustained average somewhere around 32 to 38C.

Three consequences follow, and all three show up in what people bring to a battery shop. Water loss accelerates, because gassing roughly doubles per 10C and almost every battery sold today is sealed, so the water that leaves is gone for good. Self-discharge accelerates, from roughly 5 to 8 per cent per month at 25C to roughly 15 to 20 per cent at 45C. And grid corrosion, the irreversible ageing clock, simply runs faster.

Cold cranking, the failure mode the rest of the world buys batteries to survive, barely exists here. A UAE battery almost never fails from cold. It ages in the heat until it can no longer deliver a perfectly ordinary 300 A crank on a morning like any other.

Three battery standards are sold side by side in the UAE, and mixing them up is the single most common cause of buying the wrong battery. Japanese cars carry JIS codes, European cars carry DIN or EN codes, and US-spec imports carry BCI group numbers. A counter that stocks all three is normal here; a counter that asks which one your car takes is a good sign.

Reading a JIS code such as 80D26L: 80 is a performance index that rises with capacity and cranking, D is the case width and height class, 26 is the case length in centimetres, and L means the positive terminal is on the left with the terminals facing you. DIN sizing is by box length, L1 at 207 mm through L5 at 353 mm, all 175 mm wide, with H5 to H8 the taller AGM-friendly variants. BCI group 48 is the same box as H6 and group 49 the same as H8.

You will also hear NS40, NS60, NS70 and N50Z at the counter. Broadly, NS40 corresponds to the B19 or B20 case, NS60 to B24, N50 to D23 and NS70 to the D26 case. Those are old Gulf and Australian trade names, applied inconsistently between suppliers, and a mismatch of one class is exactly what leaves a battery sitting loose in its tray. The code printed on the battery is authoritative; the trade name is a nickname.

Terminals differ physically and this catches people out. A JIS positive post is roughly 14.7 mm where a DIN positive post is roughly 19.5 mm, so a JIS battery in a DIN clamp will not tighten properly however hard the clamp is squeezed. The result is a high-resistance joint, heat, and an intermittent no-start that gets blamed on the new battery. Polarity matters just as much: an L battery where an R is specified means the cables reach only under tension, if at all.

Battery technology is not a luxury tier. It is a fitment requirement on some cars and a waste of money on others. Conventional flooded maintenance-free is correct for the large majority of GCC-spec Japanese and Korean cars without stop-start: cheapest, widely stocked, easiest to warranty locally.

EFB is a flooded battery with denser plates and roughly double the cycle life, fitted as original equipment to entry-level stop-start cars. An EFB may be replaced with an AGM, but a car specified for EFB must not be downgraded to standard flooded, because stop-start will cycle a standard battery to death in months.

AGM holds its electrolyte in glass fibre mats. Manufacturers quote three to four times the cycle life of flooded, with far better vibration tolerance and much higher charge acceptance. It is required on stop-start cars with regenerative braking and on most modern German cars, and it costs roughly two to two and a half times a flooded battery. On a 2014 Corolla, Sunny, Yaris or Pajero with no stop-start, AGM buys you nothing measurable.

One correction worth making, because the opposite is repeated locally: AGM is not a bad choice for heat. Modern sealed flooded batteries cannot be topped up either, so the old top-up argument is not a differentiator, and the mainstream literature reports AGM resisting heat-induced degradation better than flooded rather than worse. The real trade-offs with AGM here are the price and the need for correct charging and, on many German cars, registration of the new battery to the vehicle.

Lithium starter batteries are a track-day part in this climate, not a commuting part. Cell life falls sharply above about 45C, the internal management system can disconnect to protect itself and strand you with no warning, and most stock alternator profiles were never designed for one.

A fully charged battery reads 12.6 to 12.8 V at rest, four hours after the engine was last run. 12.4 V is about 75 per cent charged, 12.2 V about half, 12.0 V about a quarter. Below 12.4 V resting, sulfation has already started. A cell that reads around 10.5 V and refuses to charge has shorted internally and is finished.

Plenty of batteries condemned in this country were healthy. A corroded or over-torqued terminal clamp produces exactly the same intermittent no-start, costs nothing to clean and re-torque, and is routinely misdiagnosed. So is a failing alternator: if the charging voltage is wrong, the replacement battery will fail the same way and you will buy a third one. Ask for the alternator output figure with the engine running, and for the parasitic draw with the car asleep, before you pay for anything.

A healthy modern car draws 20 to 50 mA parked, for the alarm, telematics and sleeping modules. Anything above roughly 80 mA will flatten a 60 Ah battery in two to three weeks, which is why cars left at long-stay parking over a summer trip come back dead. That is not a faulty battery, it is self-discharge at 45C plus a standing draw, and a battery that sat flat for a month may not fully recover.

Most battery sellers here will come to the car. Mobile fitting is the normal service rather than a premium one, typically within the hour inside a city, and the call-out is usually folded into the price of the battery rather than billed separately. That is worth knowing before you arrange recovery for a car that only needs a battery.

The old battery has real value and the shop knows it, so ask for the part-exchange to be shown on the invoice rather than assumed. Scrap value for a typical 12 V car battery has been quoted locally in the region of AED 15 to 30, with bulk used lead-acid at roughly AED 2,000 to 2,500 per tonne. It is not a fortune, but it should not quietly become the seller's margin either.

Warranties are commonly 12 to 24 months and are usually pro-rata rather than a straight replacement, so the third year of a 24-month warranty is worth nothing and the claim depends on you still holding the invoice. Keep it, photograph it, and check the date code stamped on the case before the battery goes in: a battery that has sat in a hot warehouse for a year has already spent part of its life.

On stop-start cars and most modern German cars the new battery has to be registered to the vehicle so the charging strategy matches its type and age. A shop that fits an AGM and drives away without registering it has sold you a battery that will be systematically undercharged. Ask the question before you agree the price, because the shops that can do it charge a little more and are worth it.
