The quick answer
TRW is a brand of ZF Aftermarket, the parts business of ZF Friedrichshafen AG, which acquired TRW Automotive in 2015. It is not a brakes-only brand: alongside discs, pads, boosters and hoses it covers clutch systems, steering and suspension components such as tie rods, control arms and ball joints, ABS sensors, and motorcycle handlebar systems. On the braking side the three things worth knowing are its coatings and compounds, which ZF calls COTEC, DTEC and Electric Blue, and one thing worth being careful about: the car makers named on ZF's own TRW pages describe which vehicles the parts fit, not which manufacturers fit TRW at the factory.

Original equipment
No marque is named here, and the reason is a distinction that a careless reading of ZF's own pages destroys. Every vehicle manufacturer that appears on the TRW braking pages appears as coverage. When ZF writes that its wide coverage includes popular electric and hybrid cars such as Tesla, the Nissan Leaf and the Toyota Prius, it is telling you which cars there is a TRW replacement pad for. When it writes that its electric park brake range covers important platforms including Renault, Nissan, BMW and Ford, it is again describing what the aftermarket parts fit. And when it observes that BMW and Mercedes-Benz have developed semi-compound disc ranges for several models, it is describing what those manufacturers did, not what ZF supplies them. What ZF does publish about original equipment is volume without customers: nearly a hundred years of designing and building OE disc brake systems, more than 12 million brake discs a year for vehicle manufacturers, 60 million electric park brake units. Those are almost certainly true and they name nobody, so nobody is named here. If a shop tells you your car left the factory on TRW, the thing to ask for is the part number against the vehicle manufacturer's own catalogue.
Where it is made
ZF does not publish which plant builds which TRW part number, and the group is large enough that guessing would be meaningless: ZF makes driveline, chassis and safety systems across dozens of countries, and a brake pad, a tie rod and an ABS sensor sold under one badge do not necessarily come from the same place or the same continent. The honest consequence for a buyer here is the one that applies to every large supplier group. Two genuine parts carrying the same TRW number can show different countries of origin, so the country printed on the carton is not a test of anything on its own, in either direction.
TRW in the UAE

The clue to what it is for is in the address: it is a training and regional support operation on the commercial-vehicle side of the group, not a counter and not an appointed trading distributor for the TRW car range.

Two addresses for one entity, doing two different jobs. Again this is the manufacturer's own presence rather than a shop, and its existence is not an authorisation of any UAE seller.

The two entities above are ZF's own companies, named by ZF. No UAE trading house is named on this page as an authorised TRW distributor, and one specific listing is worth warning about. UAE business directories carry an entry for a TRW aftermarket branch at Office 338, Building 5EB, in the Dubai Airport Freezone. That address, character for character, is the one a competing German friction group publishes on its own contact page for its own Middle East branch. One of those two records is misfiled or stale, and there is no way to tell which from outside. Since ZF publishes two real Dubai entities of its own, there is no reason to reach for a directory entry at all.
The five-marque sentence that was not there
This page nearly published an invented fact, and it is more useful to describe how than to pretend it did not happen.
The first pass over ZF's own TRW disc-brake page came back with a clean summary sentence: TRW's original-equipment partnerships include BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Nissan and Ford. Five marques, on the manufacturer's own domain, in the exact shape an original-equipment table wants. It would have been written up with a genuine source beside it and it would have looked more trustworthy than an honest gap.
The page was fetched a second time, this time demanding the sentences character for character and asking directly whether each one meant that TRW supplies the manufacturer or merely that a TRW part fits its cars. The answer changed completely. BMW and Mercedes-Benz appear because those manufacturers developed semi-compound disc ranges for some of their models, which is a fact about them. Renault, Nissan, BMW and Ford appear in a sentence about the platforms TRW's electric park brake range covers. Tesla, the Nissan Leaf and the Toyota Prius appear in a sentence beginning with the words wide coverage. Every one of them is aftermarket fitment, pointing in the opposite direction from supply.
The general lesson is worth carrying off this page: a summarising read of a manufacturer's site will quietly turn fits into supplies, because in ordinary English those sentences look alike and only one of them is a contract. A claim with a real source attached is more dangerous when it is wrong, not less, because nobody goes back to check something that already looks checked.
TRW is not a brakes brand, and the catalogue is wider than the reputation
Most people in this market know TRW as brake pads, and that is roughly a third of what ZF sells under the badge. The TRW portfolio spans brake systems including discs, pads, boosters and hoses; clutch systems; steering and linkage components such as tie rods, control arms and ball joints; ABS sensors; and motorcycle handlebar systems.
That breadth is genuinely useful here for a mundane reason. Steering and suspension joints are among the fastest-wearing parts on a car in this country, because the combination of speed humps, kerbed roundabouts and heat is unkind to rubber and to grease. A brand that covers pads, joints and the sensor on the same wheel means one counter can supply a whole corner of the car, which matters when a workshop is trying to finish a job in a day rather than waiting on three orders.
It also means a TRW box on a shelf tells you less than you might think about what is inside it. Ask which part of the catalogue a part comes from, because the ranges described below apply to friction and to nothing else.
COTEC is the floor, not the ceiling
COTEC is the single most misunderstood thing about TRW pads in this market, because people treat it as a premium option to be upsold into. ZF's own wording settles it: all car brake pads that TRW sells in Europe are COTEC coated. It is what you get, not what you choose.
What it is: an advanced silicate coating applied to the friction material of the replacement pad, so that the pad makes proper contact with the disc from the start rather than after a bedding-in period. ZF's claim is that this cuts stopping distances by up to seven metres during bedding in, and it attributes the test to the Dutch vehicle authority RDW rather than to its own laboratory, which is a meaningfully stronger form of the claim than most brands offer.
The reason it matters is a window most drivers never think about. A brand new pad has not yet conformed to the disc, so for the first days of use the actual contact area is smaller than the pad looks. That is the window the coating is aimed at, and it is also the window in which somebody drives away from a workshop assuming the brakes are now at their best. They are not, coating or no coating, and the sensible habit after any pad change is a few deliberate, progressive stops on a quiet road before you need a hard one.
DTEC and the brake dust question people actually have
DTEC is TRW's premium ceramic formulation and its headline benefit is not stopping power, it is dirt. ZF says it reduces rim surface dust by up to 45 per cent, and pairs the ceramic compound with the same COTEC coating.
Brake dust is a bigger deal in the Emirates than the engineering suggests, for a reason that has nothing to do with braking. Cars here are washed constantly and are on display constantly, alloy wheels are the most visible surface on the car, and a low-metallic pad will put a grey film back on a freshly cleaned wheel within a week of ordinary driving. A pad that halves that is solving a real irritation even though it is not solving a safety problem.
Be clear about the trade being made, though. Ceramic compounds are formulated around a particular temperature window and they are not a general-purpose upgrade for every car and every use. If the vehicle is heavy, tows, or does repeated hard stops, the question to ask is what the compound is rated for rather than what colour the wheels stay. Choose it because you are buying cleanliness, and buy it knowing that is what you are buying.
Why an electric car gets a different pad
Electric Blue is TRW's pad programme for electric and hybrid vehicles, and it exists because an electric car uses its friction brakes in a way that would be considered a fault in a petrol car. Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so the pads are applied lightly, seldom, and almost never get hot.
That produces two problems the compound has to be designed around. Surfaces that never reach temperature do not clean themselves and can corrode between uses, particularly in humid coastal air, and pads that are rarely used are noticed the moment they make a noise, because an electric car has no engine sound to hide it. ZF addresses the second one head on with a number, quoting a noise, vibration and harshness score of 9 out of 10 for the line against an original-equipment specification of 7 out of 10, and it puts a 50,000 kilometre guarantee behind it.
The coverage figures are worth having as well, because they say something about how mature the aftermarket has become: ZF says 21 part numbers cover 97 per cent of electric vehicles in Europe, with a further 30 part numbers for hybrids. That is a small enough catalogue to make the practical advice simple. If the car is electric, ask for the electric line by name rather than accepting whatever pad the system matches to the wheel size.
Ultra and Pro are American names, and the labels do not travel
If you have read about TRW brakes in English online, you have probably met a two-step line-up called TRW Ultra and TRW Pro, described as mid-grade and premium. Those were announced for the North American aftermarket and they are a different catalogue from the one ZF publishes for this side of the world.
The European programme, which is the one described in the table above, is not a good-better-best ladder at all. It is a coating that goes on everything, a ceramic compound for people who care about dust, and an application-specific line for electrified cars. Those are different axes, and flattening them into a three-rung ladder because a North American page had one would misdescribe the product.
The practical risk is small but real. Walk into a UAE counter asking for TRW Pro and one of two things happens: either the shop maps the name onto a part number correctly, in which case the name did no work, or it maps it approximately, in which case you have chosen friction by a marketing word from another continent. Ask for the car, or hand over the number.
Buying TRW in the UAE
ZF has a real presence here and it is worth knowing precisely what it is. Its own locations page names two companies in Dubai: ZF CV Middle East and Africa FZCO, based at the ZF Services Training Centre in Jebel Ali Downtown, and ZF Services Middle East LLC, which appears twice, at a technical centre in Al Khor Industrial Area 2 and at a headquarters office in The Galleries 4. Those are the manufacturer's own companies. None of them is a shop, and their existence does not authorise any seller.
There is one listing to be careful of, and it is unusual enough to be worth naming. UAE directories carry a TRW aftermarket branch at Office 338, Building 5EB, in the Dubai Airport Freezone. That is, precisely, the address a competing German braking group publishes on its own site for its own regional branch. Two competitors do not share an office number in a free zone. One of the two records is wrong and there is no way to tell which from the outside, so this page uses neither and relies on ZF's own page instead.
For the actual purchase, the discipline is ordinary and it is the part people skip. Take the old part or its number. Have the box matched to it in front of you. Ask whether the pad you are being handed is the ceramic line or the standard one, because they are different products at different prices and they look identical through a carton window. And if the car is electric, say so out loud, because the correct answer is a specific line rather than a size.
