Start here, because almost every misunderstanding about this brand starts here. There are two unrelated automotive companies carrying the name Bilstein and they are in the same small German town. Ferdinand Bilstein GmbH and Co. KG was founded in Ennepetal in 1844 and makes the febi wear parts this page is about. thyssenkrupp Bilstein was founded in 1873 in Altenvoerde, now part of Ennepetal, belongs to thyssenkrupp AG, and makes shock absorbers and dampers.

The consequence is direct. A customer who has read about monotube gas dampers, or who has been told to fit BILSTEIN on a modified car, and who is then handed a box marked febi bilstein, has not been given what they asked for. The two names look almost identical in a parts list and they are two different manufacturers making two different things. If you want the damper, the box you are looking for does not have febi on it.

It runs the other way too, and this is the version that costs money. A febi front end kit is a perfectly reasonable thing to buy for a worn suspension. It is not a performance upgrade, it does not carry a damper maker's tuning behind it, and nobody at the group claims otherwise. Buy it for what it is.

Ferdinand Bilstein founded the business in 1844 as a steel forge. His son ran it as a maker of turned nuts and bolts from 1880. The pivot into automotive supply came in 1921, and the Febi trademark was registered at the Reichspatentamt in 1923 as a contraction of the founder's name. By 1936 the company had settled on automotive spare parts and spring bolts, and truck spare part production started in 1951.

The house is now in its seventh generation of family ownership, under a dual leadership in place since 2010, with more than 1,100 people at Ennepetal and 23 international subsidiaries as of 2025. It sells through local sales partners in more than 170 countries, and it marked its 180th anniversary in 2024.

That length of history is genuinely unusual in the aftermarket, and it is also the thing most likely to be oversold at a counter. A company founded in 1844 was not making control arms in 1844; it was forging steel. What the date honestly buys a reader is a picture of an independent family business rather than a badge licensed to whoever owns it this decade, and in a segment where brands change hands every few years that is worth something on its own.

Of more than 60,000 febi articles, roughly 48,000 are for passenger cars and vans and roughly 16,000 are for commercial vehicles. That split is the single most useful structural fact about the brand and it is the one that separates it from the other two brands in the same house, neither of which covers trucks, trailers and buses at anything like that scale.

It matters here more than it would in most markets. A great deal of what moves on Emirates Road and through Jebel Ali is light commercial: pickups, dropside trucks, panel vans, buses running staff between labour accommodation and site. Those vehicles are serviced on a cost per kilometre calculation rather than on sentiment, they wear king pins and spring pins and clutch forks rather than the parts a saloon wears, and the group names exactly those items among the commercial vehicle parts it manufactures itself at Ennepetal.

If you run one van it is a footnote. If you run a fleet it is the reason to look at this brand rather than a car-focused one, because the same supplier and the same guarantee cover both halves of the yard.

The group publishes more about its own method than most aftermarket brands do, and the method is reverse engineering rather than original design. Its engineering operation at Ennepetal runs 10,000 square metres of production space with more than 140 people, and it states that it scans original geometry with a 3D laser scanner to a tolerance of 0.05 to 0.08 millimetres, then assures the result on three-coordinate measuring machines, optical wave measuring machines and gear-tooth measuring devices.

It also publishes what it makes itself. For passenger cars: cam followers, chain tensioners, oil pumps, rocker arms, control arms and wheel hubs. For commercial vehicles: king pins, brake shoe bolts, clutch forks, belt tensioners, water pumps and spring pins. And it states, without being asked, that it cannot manufacture all of its articles itself, and that external partners make the rest in strict accordance with its detailed specifications under regular quality inspection.

Read those three statements together and you have an unusually honest picture of what this kind of brand is. It is not an original equipment supplier that happens to sell to the aftermarket, and it is not a badge on somebody else's box either. It is a specifier: a company that measures the original, writes the requirement, makes a defined slice of the range at its own plant and buys the rest against that requirement. That middle position is real, it is where most of the money in the independent aftermarket actually sits, and it is nothing like the phrase quality aftermarket that gets used to describe it.

The group's own sentence is that it supplies replacement parts exclusively in OE matching quality. It is worth pausing on the word matching, because it is the difference between a description and a claim. Matching says the part is measured against the original and built to hit it. It does not say the part is the original, that it came off the same line, or that any vehicle manufacturer specified it.

We looked for the stronger claim and it is not there. The group's own section on partnership with original equipment manufacturers names no carmaker. Its history page records that by the end of the 1950s the febi brand had established itself as an original equipment manufacturer, with a patented spring bolt as the reference product, and that timeline names no vehicle manufacturer either. A brand claim about a spring bolt seventy years ago is not a statement about the control arm you are being sold today.

So the test at the counter is a simple one. When somebody tells you the car was built with febi on it, the question is not whether febi is a good part, because it may well be. The question is whether they can put the number in front of you beside the carmaker's own listing for the same job. If they can, the badge never had to do any persuading. If they cannot, it was decoration.

febi carries a three-year manufacturer's guarantee, stated by the manufacturer on the brand's own page. That is longer than a great deal of what sits beside it on a shelf here, and it is the same period the group puts on both of its other brands, which is itself informative: this house does not use warranty length to separate its brands into price tiers.

What we are not going to do is describe what the guarantee covers. The group publishes its guarantee terms as per-language documents through a separate legal portal, and we could not read them. So this page states the period and stops. We do not know from a source whether removal and refitting labour is included, what the territorial limits are, what the exclusions look like, or what a claim requires, and inventing consumer-rights detail for a real manufacturer is a worse failure than inventing a specification: a reader would act on it.

If the guarantee is part of why you are buying the brand, ask the seller for the terms document before you pay, not after something fails. A three-year period that turns out to require a proof of purchase you never kept is a three-year period you do not have.

It is worth saying precisely what that measurement is and is not. It is a record of what shops tell us they carry. It is not an authorised distributor list, it is not a guarantee that any particular branch has your part number on the shelf this morning, and it does not tell you what the shop paid for it. What it does tell you is that if you ring around for febi here, you are not chasing something that has to be flown in.

The comparison is the useful part. Of the three brands this house sells, febi is named by ten businesses in our records, and the other two are named by none at all. Those are pages of their own on this site, and both of them say so plainly rather than implying a supply we cannot see.

There is no list of vehicle manufacturers that fit febi at the factory, because the group publishes none and a list assembled from retailers would be catalogue coverage wearing the wrong hat.

There is no description of what the guarantee covers, because the terms are published somewhere we could not read them.

There is no plant-by-part-number map, because the group tells us partners build some of the range and stops there. And no figure for what any of this costs: an arm on one car is a different order of money from an arm on another, the same part moves between counters, and a number frozen into this page in September would be quietly wrong by spring.
