Castrol engine oil in the UAE

Castrol began in London in 1899 as CC Wakefield and Co, the business Charles Wakefield founded, and the brand's technology centre is at Pangbourne in England. That is the whole of the history this page needs, and it comes from a reference source rather than from Castrol, which is why it is flagged as third party in the provenance below.

The live fact, and the one that has to carry a date, is who owns the company. Castrol's own newsroom carries the announcement that BP has agreed to sell a 65 percent shareholding in Castrol to Stonepeak, and Castrol's wording on timing is that subject to necessary approvals it expects the sale to be completed by the end of 2026. On the day this page was written, 2 September 2026, that is an agreement rather than a completed sale.

We labour the date for a reason. A sentence saying Castrol is a BP business and a sentence saying Castrol is a Stonepeak business will each be wrong at some point over the next year, and a reference page that states either one flatly is a page that quietly rots while looking authoritative. Nothing about the transaction changes what is inside a bottle already sitting on a shelf in Sharjah. What a change of owner can eventually move is who holds the distribution agreements, which happens to be the part of this page most likely to need rewriting first.

This is the rarest thing you will find on a parts brand page: a list of car makers, published by the parts brand itself, that you can go and read. Castrol's OEM partnerships page names Honda, Subaru, Volvo, the Renault Nissan Alliance, Ford, Jaguar and Land Rover. Most lubricant and component brands gesture at original equipment supply in their marketing and publish nothing checkable at all, which is why several other pages in this section of the site carry an honest blank where this list would go. Castrol prints the list, so we print it.

Castrol's own summary of what those partnerships amount to is that in partnership it provides performance to millions of drivers and that many new cars roll off the production line filled with Castrol inside. It also says that Castrol EDGE meets or exceeds 97 percent of OEM specifications. Both of those are Castrol's claims and we quote them as Castrol's rather than adopting them as findings.

One relationship is documented a great deal further than the other six. Castrol's own announcement about Jaguar Land Rover says that JLR has exclusively recommended approved Castrol engine oils since 2001, that JLR cars are born with Castrol EDGE Professional oil inside the engine, and that EDGE Professional is the only oil recommended by JLR. The same announcement says the agreement extends the relationship through to 2026. This page is being written inside that final named year, so read the Jaguar Land Rover line as accurate to the announcement and not as a forecast about next year's service schedule.

Now the part the list does not cover, because a partner list is easy to over-read. It does not say which models, which model years or which markets are included, and it certainly does not establish that the Gulf-specification car in your driveway left the factory with Castrol in it. An agreement between two companies and the oil in one particular engine are separate facts. If the answer matters to you, the handbook and the service history settle it. The badge on the bottle does not.

The most useful habit when buying any engine oil, and one that Castrol's product pages make unusually easy to practise, is to buy the approval rather than the name. Castrol's UAE page for EDGE carries manufacturer approval codes including MB-Approval 229.3 and 229.5, BMW Longlife-01, VW 502 00 and 505 00, and Porsche A40.

Those strings are the ones a car's handbook names. If the handbook asks for VW 502 00 then a bottle carrying VW 502 00 is the answer, and a more expensive bottle that does not carry it is not a better answer, however good the brand is. The range name tells you where Castrol has positioned an oil in its own catalogue. The code tells you whether the oil is the one your engine was designed around.

This gets muddled at the counter more often than it should, because the range is what people ask for and the range is what the shop repeats back. The question that actually resolves a purchase is narrower than the one most people ask: not whether Castrol EDGE is approved for a Mercedes, but whether the specific bottle in your hand prints the code your handbook names. Approvals belong to individual oils and grades, and a range page is a summary of many of them.

There is a limit to what we can tell you here, and it is worth stating. We have not verified which UAE-stocked pack sizes and grades carry which approvals, because that changes with the batch and the shelf. The back label is the authority on that, and it takes ten seconds to read.

EDGE is the top of the car range and every EDGE variant listed on the UAE page is described as full synthetic. Castrol's framing of it is that the range is tested at the highest standards to meet the challenge of maintaining the high performance levels drivers expect while engine technology adapts to demanding legislative limits, and its performance claims are about power and about fuel economy. It is also the range that carries the manufacturer approvals in the table above, which is the practical reason most people end up in it.

MAGNATEC is the range built around what Castrol calls DUALOCK technology. Castrol says it is specifically engineered for today's urban driving environment and designed to protect engines against the wear caused by re-starting in busy traffic, and that the patented molecule in DUALOCK helps provide 50 percent better protection from warm-up wear and re-start wear. That figure is Castrol's own and we neither endorse it nor discount it. What is worth thinking about honestly is whether Castrol's description matches your week: a commute made of short hops between traffic lights is the driving this range is described for, and a long open run is not.

GTX is where this page earns its keep, because it is the range people most often get wrong across markets. On Castrol's UAE pages the GTX grades listed are 20W-50, 10W-30 and 10W-40, and they are listed as mineral oils. Castrol's claim for it is about cleanliness: a 3X-Protect formula that surrounds and suspends dirt particles to keep engines cleaner for longer than the API SN specification requires. In other countries the GTX name also appears on synthetic products. So if somebody abroad recommends a synthetic GTX and you buy a bottle of GTX here on the strength of it, you may not be buying the same category of oil at all. Read the pack.

Castrol's UAE site goes past engine oil. It lists TRANSMAX Axle AP 85W-140, described as a multipurpose gear oil for use in most trucks, light commercial vehicles and passenger cars where API GL-5 and MT-1 performance is required, along with TRANSMAX Axle 80W-90 and TRANSMAX Axle 85W-140, described as multigrade gear oils recommended for axles, transaxles or differentials to API GL-5.

One line on that page deserves reading twice, and it is the kind of line that never survives into a shop's own product description. Castrol says the AP 85W-140 product is not recommended for Eaton, Spicer, Renault or Rockwell transmissions. If you are buying axle oil for a commercial vehicle, a manufacturer's own exclusion list outranks whatever the counter reaches for, and this one is published in plain sight.

The same discipline as the engine oil section applies here. API GL-5 is the specification Castrol names against these products. If your handbook names a different specification, that is a different product rather than the same oil under another label, and once again it is the code rather than the brand that settles it.

Castrol does something on this market that most of the manufacturers covered in this section do not: it publishes an authorised distributor directory on its own United Arab Emirates site. Its reasoning is its own, and it is the sort of statement worth quoting rather than paraphrasing. Castrol says buying from authorised distributors means 100 percent authentic products that meet international quality standards, and that those partners offer professional guidance, proper product handling and dependable after-sales service.

One name we are willing to print, because Castrol prints it, is Central Trading Company, which appears in that directory with the telephone number +971 4 203 6888. Castrol's entry gives no postal address, no website and no sector.

Now the caution, and it is real, because it caught us while this page was being written. That directory is regional rather than national. Its country filter covers Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, Palestine, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, and every entry is served under the same UAE-locale address with the page heading naming the United Arab Emirates. The individual entries print no country field. When we opened a second entry to name a second distributor, its telephone number turned out to be a Kuwait line. Had we trusted the page heading, this page would now be telling you that a Kuwaiti company is your local Castrol distributor.

The lesson generalises past Castrol, so take it with you: a company appearing on a manufacturer's site under a country locale is not necessarily a company in that country. The telephone code is the cheapest check available and it takes a glance. We name one distributor here rather than four for exactly that reason, and we would rather be short than wrong.

Several UAE trading companies describe themselves as Castrol distributors on their own websites. None of them is named here. A business describing its own authorisation is not verification of it, and the directory above is where that question gets settled properly, by whoever is asking.

It will not tell you what Castrol costs. No price appears anywhere above, and that is a rule across every brand page here rather than an oversight on this one. What a four-litre pack costs in Deira depends on the range, the grade, the pack and the shop, manufacturers do not publish installed UAE prices, and a stale figure attached to a brand name is worse than no figure at all. It will not tell you that your car was factory-filled with Castrol. Seven marques are named above because Castrol names them, and a partner list is not a build sheet. The one relationship described in detail, Jaguar Land Rover, is described in Castrol's words and is tied to an agreement whose stated term runs to this year.

And it will not tell you whether Castrol is better than the brand beside it on the shelf. The comparison that decides an oil purchase is between an approval code and a handbook, not between two badges. Where two oils both carry the specification your engine needs, what is left to choose on is price, availability and which counter you would rather walk back into.
