Original equipment
There is no original-equipment section here because there is no original-equipment story, and that is not an omission we are apologising for. OPTIMA is an aftermarket performance brand. It was built around a patent for a sealed lead-acid battery and sold on how it is made rather than on who fits it, and nothing on its own site claims a factory-fitment programme with any vehicle manufacturer. Compare that with its sister brand VARTA, which is owned by the same company and publishes a list of more than thirty marques: two brands, one owner, completely different positions. If a seller tells you OPTIMA is original equipment on something, ask which vehicle and then check it against that manufacturer's own catalogue, because OPTIMA is not the party making that claim.

OPTIMA's own site states that its Monterrey production facility is currently the only place where OPTIMA batteries are produced, and that the first battery off the line there was a Group 75/25 REDTOP on 6 July 2007. If you are holding an OPTIMA, this is where it was built.

Historical rather than current. OPTIMA's brand history records the company breaking ground on a larger manufacturing facility northeast of Denver, Colorado in 1994, and a second facility in 2007. Colorado is where the brand was made for years, which is why older batteries and a great deal of older writing about them say so.

OPTIMA in the UAE
We could not verify one. Neither OPTIMA nor Clarios publishes a United Arab Emirates distributor or regional office on the pages we read. At least one Dubai trading company describes itself as the leading UAE stockist of the RedTop, YellowTop and BlueTop range; that is a shop describing itself, not an appointment we can check, and we do not put an unverified authorisation badge on a page. If it matters to you, ask the seller to show you the appointment in writing from Clarios. What we can tell you honestly is that OPTIMA is a specialist purchase in this market rather than a counter staple, and the shops that hold it tend to be the ones building four-wheel drives and audio installations rather than the general battery trade.
What a spiral-wound cell actually is
Almost every car battery you will be offered in this country is built the same way inside: flat lead plates, stacked with separators between them, sitting in a rectangular box. OPTIMA is not. Its cells are wound rather than stacked, and that single decision is the whole brand.
In OPTIMA's own description, each lead plate is manufactured as a continuously cast strip from two pure lead plates, coated with a precise coating of lead oxide, and then wound in a process the company itself compares to a jelly roll. The result is a series of individual spiral-wound cells rather than a stack. Those cells go into precision-moulded cylindrical cases, which is why an OPTIMA does not look like other batteries and why it feels different in the hand.
What the winding buys, in OPTIMA's words, is more plate surface, closer plate spacing and the use of high-purity lead, which together give low internal resistance. Low internal resistance is the unglamorous engineering term for the thing a driver actually notices: the battery can push current out faster and take it back in faster.
There are two further consequences the company states directly. The plates are immobilised under compression, locked in place, and OPTIMA gives that as the reason for improved vibration resistance and for the design not shedding active material the way a loose flat-plate battery can. And the purity of the lead in the plates is given as the reason for a low self-discharge rate, which is the property that decides whether a battery left standing for a month still starts the car.
OPTIMA describes the winding process as far more precision-controlled and expensive than building traditional flat-plate batteries, using custom automated cell-winding machines to hold the tolerances. That is a manufacturer explaining its own cost base, and it is worth reading as such. It is also the honest answer to why an OPTIMA costs what it costs.
The colour on the lid is the specification
OPTIMA does not sell tiers, and it does not sell warranty lengths. It sells three colours, and each colour is a different job. Getting this right is most of what a buyer needs from this page.
REDTOP is the starting battery. OPTIMA's own guidance is to use it for normal engine starting, where an alternator immediately monitors the state of charge and supplies energy to the battery whenever it is needed, and it notes that a starting battery works better and lasts longer when it is kept as close to a full state of charge as possible. For a car that is electrically much as it left the factory, this is the one.
YELLOWTOP is the dual-purpose battery. OPTIMA's guidance is to use it when electrical loads are higher than average or when the discharge cycle is more than typical engine starting, and it names the cases: vehicles without alternators, and vehicles with significant electrical loads that may exceed average alternator output, listing aftermarket audio systems, navigation, chargers, winches, snowplows and inverters. It is designed and warrantied for starting and deep-cycle use, and built to be significantly discharged and recharged over and over.
BLUETOP is the marine and caravanning line, and it is the one where people go wrong, because there are two of them. OPTIMA is unusually blunt about it: the BLUETOP starting battery, in a dark grey case, is to be used when a dedicated starting battery is required and should never be used for cycling duty. The dual-purpose BLUETOP, in a light grey case, can be used for both starting and deep cycling, and OPTIMA describes it as a true deep-cycle battery with extremely high cranking power.
So on a BLUETOP, the case colour is not packaging. Two batteries with the same coloured lid and different coloured bodies are two different products, and buying the wrong one is not a small mistake because the dark grey one is not built to be cycled at all.
The terminal trap, and other things to check before you pay
There is one difference between the ranges that has nothing to do with performance and stops installations dead, so it belongs near the top of anyone's checklist. BLUETOP batteries have both automotive SAE posts and threaded studs. YELLOWTOP batteries, other than the D31T, have SAE terminals only. If your installation is built around ring terminals on studs, that sentence decides which battery you can buy, and it is not printed on the front of the box.
The second thing to check is the tray. OPTIMA's cases are precision-moulded cylindrical shapes rather than the standard flooded rectangle, and while the group sizes are standard, the shape is not. A battery that does not seat properly and clamp down will vibrate, and the irony of buying a battery marketed on vibration resistance and then leaving it loose in the tray is not lost on anyone who has done it.
Third, think about how it will be charged if it is going to spend time off the vehicle. OPTIMA states that when used with a properly regulated constant voltage charging system it will not emit hydrogen gas, which is a statement about the charging system as much as about the battery. A deep-cycle battery in a four-wheel drive or a boat frequently gets charged by something other than the engine, and matching the charger to the battery is part of the purchase rather than an afterthought.
One vibration figure is worth quoting precisely rather than loosely, because it circulates in a much broader form than OPTIMA states it. In the marine section of its technology material, OPTIMA says the BLUETOP is up to fifteen times more resistant to vibration than conventional batteries. That is a claim about BLUETOP, made by OPTIMA, in a marine context. It is not a general claim about every OPTIMA in every application, and we are not going to widen it into one.
Where the brand came from, and who owns it now
OPTIMA has an unusually well documented history for a parts brand, and the dates are all published by the company itself, which makes them worth setting out.
The design begins with a patent. On 30 May 1972 Donald H. McClelland and John L. Devitt filed a patent claim for a maintenance-free type lead-acid battery, and on 2 January 1975 the patent was issued and assigned to the Gates Rubber Company. That is the origin of the spiral-wound cell, and it explains why a battery brand traces itself back to a rubber company.
In 1990 Gates formally incorporated the division as OPTIMA Batteries, Inc. In 1992 the Gylling Group of Scandinavia bought OPTIMA Batteries from Gates. In 1994 the company broke ground on a larger manufacturing facility northeast of Denver, Colorado. In 2000 Johnson Controls acquired OPTIMA Batteries, and in 2019 Johnson Controls Power Solutions separated from Johnson Controls International to become its own company, Clarios, which is the owner today.
Four owners in five decades is a lot of corporate change for a product whose fundamental design has not changed, and that is the point worth taking from it. What you are buying is a patent from 1975 and a manufacturing process built around it. The badge on the parent company has moved several times; the jelly roll has not.
The current owner is worth one further sentence only because it is a genuine source of confusion. Clarios also owns VARTA, and the two brands sit at opposite ends of the same catalogue: VARTA publishes a long list of the carmakers it supplies, and OPTIMA publishes none because it is not in that business. Same owner, different job.
Why OPTIMA sells in the UAE, and to whom
OPTIMA is not a general replacement battery in this market and it is worth being straight about that before someone buys one for a Corolla. It is a specialist product bought for specialist reasons, and in the UAE those reasons cluster in a few places.
The first and largest is the prepared four-wheel drive. A vehicle built for dune driving and desert camping tends to accumulate exactly the loads OPTIMA names for YELLOWTOP: a winch, a fridge, auxiliary lighting, a compressor, an inverter. Those are not incidental electrics, they are cycling loads, and a starting battery asked to do that job is being used outside its design.
The second is car audio, where the pattern is the same even though the vehicle is not. The third is anything that sits unused for long stretches, where a low self-discharge rate matters more than cranking power. And the fourth is boats, which is what the BLUETOP line exists for.
If none of those describes your car, the useful and slightly unhelpful answer is that a conventional battery correctly specified for the vehicle will do the job, and the money is better spent on getting the specification right than on the brand. There is nothing on this page that argues otherwise, and a brand page that will not tell you when its brand is the wrong purchase is not worth reading.

No lifespan figure, no cycle count and no comparison against a named rival. OPTIMA publishes performance claims about its own construction, and we have quoted the ones we could attribute exactly, including the vibration figure in the narrow form OPTIMA actually states it. What we have not done is convert any of those into a promise about years, cycles or how it compares with the battery it is sitting next to on a shelf.
No price. Manufacturers do not publish installed UAE prices for batteries, and for a specialist product bought in small numbers the spread between sellers is wider than for a common part, not narrower.
