Kolbenschmidt pistons in the UAE

Most brand pages open by telling you who owns the brand. This one has to open by telling you that the question has two answers, and that they are both correct.

The factory came first. On 20 December 2023 Rheinmetall announced that it had signed the sale of its entire small-bore piston business — the part of it that makes pistons for cars and commercial vehicles — to Comitans Capital AG of Munich, with completion targeted for 31 March 2024. Rheinmetall was explicit about what the business would become: an autonomous, independent enterprise trading under the name Kolbenschmidt Pistons. It took eight production facilities in seven countries and approximately 3,650 people with it. Earlier the same year Rheinmetall had already sold the separate large-bore piston unit to Koncentra Verkstads AB of Sweden.

The name came second, and later. The Kolbenschmidt trademark, along with Pierburg and the Motorservice aftermarket organisation, remained inside Rheinmetall's Power Systems division. On 3 June 2026 Rheinmetall announced that it had signed that division over to AEQUITA of Munich, in a deal covering around two billion euros of 2025 sales and approximately 6,250 employees, all of whom the buyer said it intended to keep. Rheinmetall's own wording is that the trademark rights remaining within the company go with it, and that the business continues independently under its existing brands.

So the piston maker and the piston brand have been in different hands since 2024, and the brand is on its way to a third owner. We could not find any document setting out how the trademark is licensed between the two, and we are not going to guess at one. The two facts stand next to each other on this page exactly as their sources leave them.

This distinction is the whole reason to read this page rather than an older one, and it is the thing that will be wrong on most of what you find elsewhere.

The Comitans sale was signed in December 2023 with completion targeted for the following March. It is history. Any page that still describes the piston plants as a Rheinmetall business is describing 2023.

The AEQUITA sale is not history. As at the date this page was last checked it is a signed agreement with completion expected in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approval, and a signed agreement is not a completed one. That is why this page does not say that AEQUITA owns Kolbenschmidt. It says Rheinmetall has agreed to sell, and it dates the statement.

There is a second reason to be careful with that transaction, which is that it did not take everything. Rheinmetall named three things it was keeping: the KS Huayu AluTech locations, its stake in Dermalog SensorTec, and the Abadiano plant in Spain. A page that flattened the sale into one sentence would imply those went too.

If you are buying a Kolbenschmidt piston through an independent workshop rather than a franchised dealer, the organisation between you and the plant is MS Motorservice International. It describes itself as the exclusive independent-aftermarket distributor for Kolbenschmidt products, and it makes a specific claim about why that matters: close cooperation with the original-equipment manufacturer gives it access to current and future products from the original-equipment range.

That claim is worth reading carefully, because it is doing real work. It is not saying the aftermarket box contains a lesser part. It is saying the aftermarket box is fed from the same range. Whether that holds for a specific part number is a question for the part number.

Motorservice also carries Pierburg and TRW Engine Components, and it says the original packaging on its products carries anti-counterfeiting security features. We can tell you those features exist because Motorservice says so. We cannot tell you what they look like, because the page that would describe them did not load for us, and inventing a hologram or a seal for a reader to check would be worse than saying nothing. If you want to authenticate a box, ask Motorservice or the seller what the current feature is rather than trusting a description you read somewhere.

The plant list Rheinmetall published at the point of sale is unusually specific for this trade, and it is the most useful thing on this page for anybody standing at a counter. Neckarsulm in Germany. Marinette in Wisconsin. Celaya in Mexico. Nova Odessa in Brazil. Trmice in the Czech Republic. Hiroshima in Japan. Shanghai and Chongqing in China, both joint ventures.

A German name, a Japanese plant, a Mexican plant and two Chinese joint ventures, all genuine. That has one practical consequence and it is worth stating plainly: the country of origin printed on a Kolbenschmidt box tells you where a piston was made and nothing else. It is not a grade, it is not a warning, and it is not a test of authenticity. Somebody who rejects a box because it does not say Germany is applying a rule that the manufacturer's own network does not support.

What the list does not do is tell you which plant makes which part number. Rheinmetall did not publish that and we are not going to reconstruct it from what a box happened to say.

Our own supplier records contain no shop in the United Arab Emirates that lists Kolbenschmidt by name. Two do list the two-letter mark KS, both on shelves that are otherwise German truck-parts shelves.

KS is Kolbenschmidt's own trade mark, so the reading is a natural one. We are still not going to publish it as a finding. KS is two letters, two letters collide with a great many other things, and a page that turned an abbreviation into a stockist list would be doing exactly the sort of confident inference this whole segment exists to avoid. Both of those shops also list Glyco, which is frequently described as a sibling bearing brand in the same aftermarket house, and we could not source that relationship either, because the page that would establish it timed out.

So the honest position is short. Two shops here list a mark that is probably Kolbenschmidt's. Two is not a list. If you want the brand specifically, ask before you drive, and ask for the full name rather than the abbreviation.

A piston is not a filter. It is not chosen from a shelf by looking at the car, it is chosen against a measured bore in an engine that is already apart, and the person doing the measuring is the person who should be ordering the part.

That shapes what this page is willing to publish. There are no dimensions here, no clearances, no oversize grades and no compression heights, because those are engine-specific numbers that Kolbenschmidt publishes per application and we have not read them. A brand page that offered general piston specifications would be offering something that is either useless or wrong depending on the engine, and on a part that fails by seizing, wrong is expensive.

The useful discipline is the same one that governs the rest of this page. Take the number off the old part or out of the machine shop's measurement sheet, hand that number to the counter, and check what comes back against it before anything is paid for. Everything else on a piston box, including the country, the abbreviation and the corporate history in the sections above, is context rather than specification.

Two of the facts above are perishable, and we would rather name them than have a reader discover it.

The AEQUITA transaction is expected to complete in the fourth quarter of 2026. When it does, the sentence about who holds the Kolbenschmidt brand rights changes, and this page will need reading again. Until it does, the sentence as written is the accurate one and saying otherwise would be running ahead of the source.

The plant list is dated to the December 2023 sale. Plants open and close, and the list has already outlived the ownership that published it. Treat it as what a genuine Kolbenschmidt piston could have come from at that moment, which is what it is, rather than as a live register.
