Ajusa gaskets in the UAE

Ajusa makes internal combustion engine components in Albacete, a city in south-eastern Spain, and has done since 1972. The reported floor space is over 43,000 square metres on the site the company has occupied since it was founded. The name itself is reported to be a compression of three things: auto, juntas, which is Spanish for gaskets, and S.A., the Spanish form of a limited company. A company named after the thing it makes rarely diversifies far, and this one has not.

The catalogue reflects that. It is head gaskets and gasket sets, head bolt sets, valve cover gaskets, intake and exhaust gaskets, hydraulic lifters and a silicone sealant. There are no filters, no brake parts and no suspension components wearing this badge. What you get instead is a range that covers a single job, engine sealing, at the depth a specialist reaches after fifty years of doing only that.

Ajusa is reported to export to more than eighty countries, with branches in the United States, Great Britain, Mexico, Brazil and France. Every source we read describes those as sales operations rather than plants, and we have kept them that way. The manufacturing story we could source is Spanish and single-site, which if it is accurate is a genuinely unusual thing in this trade, and it is the thing we would most like to have confirmed.

It is normal for a brand page to be built on the manufacturer's own website. This one is not, and rather than leave that unstated we are going to be explicit about it, because a reader who assumes otherwise is being misled by our silence.

Ajusa's Spanish domain redirects to a site built entirely in JavaScript. Every path we tried, the company page, the product pages, the English and United States versions, returned a document containing the word Ajusa and nothing else. There is no readable text on it for a tool that fetches pages rather than running a browser, so nothing in it reached us. Separately, the obvious guess at an address, ajusa dot com, belongs to a completely different and unrelated business, a United States retailer with a similar name, and anyone researching this brand by typing what looks like the right domain will land on the wrong company entirely.

So the substantive source behind everything above is CRP Automotive, which has distributed Ajusa in the United States since 2011. That is a real and reasonably informed source. It is also a company whose business is selling these parts, which means its adjectives are marketing and only its facts are useful. We have taken the product list, the founding year, the location and the certifications, and we have left the descriptions of quality where we found them.

The practical consequence for you is small but real. Where this page says something is reported rather than stated, that is not hedging for its own sake. It means we could not get to the manufacturer, and you should weight the claim accordingly.

A great many parts brands run a ladder: a standard line, a better line and a top line, with the differences explained somewhere on their site. We could find nothing of the kind for Ajusa. The catalogue we could source is organised by what the part is, not by how good it is supposed to be, and there is no named upgrade sitting above the ordinary version of a head gasket set.

That matters at a counter in a specific way. If you ask for the better Ajusa, or the premium one, a shop has three options: tell you there is not one, sell you something from another brand, or agree with you and hand over whatever it has. Only the first is honest, and you have no way of telling which you got. Asking a question that assumes a range structure that does not exist is a good way to be sold something you did not choose.

The version of the question that works is the boring one. Ask for the Ajusa part number for your engine, and ask what else is in the set. On a brand with one grade, the only meaningful decisions left are whether you are buying the right article and whether the set covers the whole job.

One thing that would normally sit here is a certification story, and it is thinner than we would like. Ajusa's US distributor lists ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and an ISO or TS certification whose revision it does not state. We are repeating the first two and declining to guess at the third, because the revision number is the part that says what the certificate actually covers, and a standard quoted without one is a logo rather than a claim.

The two cheapest things in the Ajusa range, valve cover gaskets and manifold gaskets, are behind a large share of the complaints that bring a car to a counter, and they are routinely mistaken for something worse.

Oil appearing down the outside of an engine is very often a valve cover gasket, which is the seal between the rocker or cam cover and the top of the head. It is close to the cheapest gasket on the engine and it fails by hardening. What makes it worth catching is where the oil goes next: down onto the exhaust, where it smokes and smells and convinces a driver that something serious is happening, or onto rubber and wiring, which it degrades. The repair is inexpensive and the consequences of ignoring it are not proportional to the price of the part.

A tick or a puff at the manifold is the other one. An exhaust manifold gasket leak is loudest on a cold engine and frequently goes quiet as everything expands and the joint closes up, which reads to a driver as a problem that fixed itself. It has not. The joint is still moving and the face is still being eroded by hot gas each time the engine is started, and a manifold face that has been left long enough stops being a gasket job and becomes a machining one.

In both cases the useful thing is timing rather than product selection. These are the two repairs where waiting genuinely changes the size of the bill, and both parts are in the cheapest quarter of any gasket catalogue.

Hydraulic lifters are the one thing in this range that is not sealing. A hydraulic lifter takes up the clearance in the valve train automatically using engine oil pressure, which is why engines fitted with them do not need periodic valve adjustment. When one stops doing that, the clearance opens up and the engine taps.

The trap is that the tapping is not diagnostic. Low oil pressure produces it, oil that is too thick or too degraded to fill the lifter produces it, worn valve gear produces it, and an actual failed lifter produces it. All four sound broadly the same from the driver's seat, and only one of them is fixed by buying lifters. Replacing a set on a car whose real problem is oil pressure means paying for a top-end strip and getting the same noise back.

So this is the part of the Ajusa range where we would push hardest against ordering on symptom. Have the oil pressure checked, have the oil and filter history established, and only then buy the parts. It is also the one item here where the labour is a large multiple of the component cost, which is exactly the situation in which a wrong diagnosis is expensive.

There is a statement about Ajusa that appears on reseller page after reseller page, in almost identical words: that Ajusa was the first manufacturer in the world to convert its entire production to asbestos-free gaskets, in 1995. It is a striking claim, it is flattering, and it fits neatly into the kind of paragraph a brand page is expected to contain.

We are not publishing it, and the reasons are worth setting out because they generalise. It is a world-first superlative, which is a claim about every other manufacturer on earth and not just about this one, and nobody publishes the survey that would support it. It appears in near-identical wording across unrelated sellers, which is the signature of copied press-kit text rather than of independent verification. And the one place that could settle it, Ajusa's own site, is the site we could not read.

That combination is exactly how a page ends up confidently wrong. This site has published a superlative before that was correctly sourced in its parts and false as a whole, inside structured data that fed a search engine, and the lesson from it was not to check harder but to notice that a superlative is a different kind of claim from a fact. So the claim stays here, described and attributed to nobody, rather than in the body of the page as history.

If it turns out to be true, we have lost a nice sentence. If it is not, we have avoided repeating an unverifiable boast about a real company under our own name.

We have no evidence about Ajusa's availability in the Emirates in either direction. No UAE distributor or office could be sourced, the manufacturer's site was unreadable so there was no where-to-buy list to check, and our own records of what shops here say they stock do not mention the brand. That is genuinely all we know, and the shops shown alongside this page are there because they stock this category of part rather than because we have confirmed any of them carries this badge.

Absence of evidence is doing real work in that sentence. Spanish gasket brands travel widely through European wholesale, and a counter that has never listed Ajusa anywhere can still order it in a few days. The right question is not whether a shop has it on the shelf but whether it can get the article number and how long that takes.

One last thing that applies to any gasket purchase and applies doubly to a brand whose manufacturer you cannot check anything against. The part is cheap and the labour around it is not. Whatever badge you end up with, the money in a head job is in getting the head off and back on, so it is worth spending a little time on whether the set is complete and whether the bolts are included, and rather less on the name printed on the box.
