Dobinsons springs and shock absorbers in the UAE
Coil springs, leaf springs, shock absorbers and four-wheel-drive suspension kits

The quick answer
Dobinsons Spring and Suspension is a family-named Australian manufacturer that began in 1953 when Reg Dobinson, a blacksmith, started repairing and making springs in the backyard of his home in Rockhampton, Queensland. Springs are still the centre of the business: the Rockhampton factory runs a leaf spring line and a coil spring line, and the company added its own four-wheel-drive shock absorber range only in the late 1990s, after more than forty years of spring work. Dobinsons says where its springs are made. It does not say where its shocks are made, and this page does not fill that gap in.

Key facts
- Dobinsons was founded in 1953 by Reg Dobinson, a blacksmith, as Dobinsons Welding Works, in the backyard of his home in Rockhampton, Queensland.
- The company moved to its current Rockhampton site in 1991. Reg retired in 1994, leaving Glen and Keith as directors.
- It built its own coil spring manufacturing line in the mid-1990s and began designing and distributing its own range of four-wheel-drive shock absorbers in the late 1990s, with more than forty years of spring experience behind it.
- The Rockhampton factory is over four thousand square metres and holds a leaf spring production line, a coil spring production line and two stock-holding warehouses. Products are distributed to more than fifty countries.
- Dobinsons says its shock absorbers are designed and developed in-house. It does not publish where they are manufactured, so this page states no country for them.
- The damper range is three constructions: conventional twin tube, IMS monotube with an internal floating piston, and MRR with three-way adjustment.

Which one fits your car
| If this is your car | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Sagging rear on a leaf-sprung utility that carries weight | Leaf springs | A leaf pack carries the load and locates the axle at once, so replacing it changes more than ride height. |
| Coil-sprung wagon that sits low on the front with a bar fitted | Coil springs | The spring is the part that carries added permanent weight. A damper cannot hold a vehicle up. |
| Straightforward replacement of tired original dampers | Twin Tube | The conventional construction and the long-standing range. No adjustment to set and nothing to get wrong. |
| Long stretches of corrugated or rough surface at speed | IMS | The internal floating piston keeps gas and oil apart, which is the mechanism that addresses fade. |
| Owner intending to tune damping for a specific load or surface | MRR | Three-way adjustment. Only worth buying if the adjustment is actually going to be used. |
The range descriptions are the manufacturer’s. Matching them to a car is our guidance, and it is a starting point rather than a fitment check — the part number is what actually decides. Send us the make, model and year and we will confirm it.
Original equipment
Dobinsons claims no original-equipment supply and this page invents none for it. It sells springs and dampers to replace or upgrade what a vehicle came with, which is a different business from supplying an assembly line, and a spring maker that has spent seventy years selling to owners rather than to manufacturers has no reason to pretend otherwise. If a seller tells you Dobinsons is the factory part on anything, ask which vehicle and which part number, then check it against the vehicle manufacturer's own catalogue.
Where it is made
Australia
Coil springs and leaf springs are manufactured at the Rockhampton factory in Queensland, which runs a dedicated production line for each. This is the part of the range Dobinsons states a location for.

The shock absorbers are the gap, and it is worth being exact about it. Dobinsons says they are designed and developed in-house, which is a claim about engineering rather than about a factory floor, and it publishes no manufacturing location for them anywhere we could read. A great many pages about this brand slide from Australian springs to Australian shocks in a single sentence. That slide is not supported by anything Dobinsons says, so this page keeps the two apart: springs at Rockhampton, dampers designed in-house and built somewhere the manufacturer does not name.
Dobinsons in the UAE
We can name nobody here, and the reason is unusually concrete. There is clearly a Dobinsons trading presence in Dubai: an industrial-area address appears in local business directories, there is a Dobinsons social account run for this market, and a Middle East website exists describing itself as the official regional arm for the UAE, the wider Gulf and Africa. Not one of those could be verified against the manufacturer. The Middle East site returned a server error on every attempt over two hosts, and the main Australian site refused our requests outright, so what remains are claims businesses make about themselves. That is not verification, whatever it is a claim about. Ask any shop offering Dobinsons what they are authorised on and who authorised it, and expect an answer that comes from Rockhampton rather than from the shop.
A blacksmith, a backyard and seventy years of springs
Dobinsons is one of the few suspension names where the founding story explains the product line rather than decorating it. Reg Dobinson was a blacksmith, and in 1953 he started Dobinsons Welding Works in the backyard of his home in Rockhampton, in central Queensland. What he specialised in was repairing and manufacturing springs for Rockhampton and the country around it, which in that part of Australia meant vehicles that carried weight over unsealed roads for a living.
The company moved to its current Rockhampton site in 1991. Reg retired in 1994, leaving Glen and Keith as directors. In the mid-1990s it designed and built its own coil spring manufacturing line, and only in the late 1990s, with more than forty years of spring experience already behind it, did it begin designing, developing and distributing its own range of four-wheel-drive shock absorbers.
That sequence is the whole shape of the brand. Most suspension names that a buyer meets are damper companies that also sell springs. Dobinsons is a spring company that later added dampers, and it still runs a leaf line and a coil line side by side in a factory of over four thousand square metres with two stock-holding warehouses attached. Its products reach more than fifty countries, and a United States arm, Dobinsons Spring and Suspension USA, started in 2017 in Doral, Florida.
Where the springs are made, and where the shocks are not said to be made
This is the section of the page that matters most, because it is the one thing about Dobinsons that is repeated wrongly almost everywhere.
The springs are made at Rockhampton. Dobinsons says so directly, names the two production lines, and describes the factory. If somebody sells you a Dobinsons coil or a Dobinsons leaf pack as Australian-manufactured, that is supported.
The shock absorbers are a different claim, and Dobinsons makes a different one about them. It says they are designed and developed in-house. Designed and developed describes engineering work; it does not describe a factory, and Dobinsons publishes no manufacturing location for its dampers anywhere we could read.
So the two halves of the range have to be described in two different sentences, and that is not pedantry. A buyer paying a premium for an Australian-made product is entitled to know exactly which part of what they are buying carries that description. On the springs, it does. On the shocks, the manufacturer has not said, and neither will we. If it matters to you, that is a question to put to the seller and to expect a documented answer to rather than an assurance.
Three damper constructions, and what actually separates them
Dobinsons publishes three shock absorber constructions rather than a good, better and best ladder, which is a more honest way to present dampers and a slightly harder one to shop from. Here is what each one is.
The Twin Tube is the conventional design and the range that has been in the catalogue longest. Oil moves between an inner working cylinder and an outer reserve tube. It is the simplest thing to build well and the cheapest thing to build badly, and in a range like this it is the straightforward replacement option.
The IMS is a monotube with an internal floating piston. That piston is the entire point of the design: it sits between the oil and the pressurised gas and physically separates them, so the two cannot mix under repeated fast cycling. When gas and oil do mix, the oil becomes compressible foam and the damper stops damping, which is what fade actually is at the mechanical level. Dobinsons markets the IMS on resisting fade in hot and demanding conditions, and that framing is a manufacturer's marketing claim rather than a published test result, so take it as a description of the design intent and not as a measured outcome.
The MRR is the race-derived monotube with a three-way adjustment system, meaning the owner sets the damping rather than accepting a single factory tune. Adjustable dampers reward people who will actually adjust them and punish people who will not, because an adjustable shock set wrongly is worse than a fixed shock set correctly by somebody who knew the vehicle.
One range name you may see on retailer listings does not appear in anything Dobinsons publishes, and it is not on this page. If a seller offers you a Dobinsons product line whose name you cannot find on the manufacturer's own material, ask what it is before you assume it is a range you have not heard of.
Why a spring maker's catalogue is organised the way it is
Because Dobinsons came to dampers from springs rather than the other way round, its catalogue reads differently from a damper specialist's, and it is worth knowing how to use it.
A damper brand tends to organise by tier: an entry line, a mid line, a performance line, and the buyer picks a level. A spring brand organises by what the vehicle is and what it weighs, because a spring is a load-bearing part and there is no meaningful sense in which one is a premium version of another. A spring is either rated for the weight on the vehicle or it is not.
That has a consequence for anyone shopping the range. The question a Dobinsons catalogue is built to answer is what the vehicle is and how it is loaded, and only then which damper construction suits the way it is driven. Approaching it the other way round, by picking the most expensive shock and treating the spring as an accessory to it, gets the order backwards. The spring holds the vehicle up. The damper only controls how the spring behaves once it has been disturbed, and no damper compensates for a spring rated for a vehicle lighter than yours.
The other consequence is about parts of the range this page does not select shops on. Our shop matching runs on coil springs, shock absorbers and struts. Leaf packs are a real and significant part of what Dobinsons manufactures, and there is no leaf-spring key in the vocabulary we match on, so a shop shown below is a shop matched on the other three. Say leaf packs out loud at the counter rather than assuming.
The Middle East arm we could not open
A page like this is supposed to end by telling you where to buy the thing. This one cannot, and the reason is specific enough to be worth writing down rather than glossing over.
There is a Dobinsons presence in Dubai. An industrial-area address appears in local business directories, a regional social account is run for this market, and a Middle East website exists that describes itself as the official regional arm covering the UAE, the wider Gulf and Africa. Any or all of that may be exactly what it appears to be.
None of it could be checked. The Middle East site returned a server error on every request across two hosts, and Dobinsons' own Australian site refused our requests entirely. What was left were claims that businesses make about themselves in directories, and a directory listing is not a manufacturer confirming a relationship. So this page names no UAE distributor, no importer and no dealer, which is a limitation of what we could verify rather than a statement that no legitimate supplier exists.
What we can offer instead is the question worth asking. Dobinsons sells springs it manufactures itself and dampers it designs itself, and the two arrive through different parts of the same catalogue. Ask a seller which of the two they are quoting you, ask which vehicle and load the spring is rated for, and ask them to show you the manufacturer's own listing for the part number rather than their own.

Dobinsons — common questions
- Are Dobinsons springs made in Australia?
- Yes. Dobinsons manufactures coil springs and leaf springs at its Rockhampton factory in Queensland, which runs a dedicated production line for each. That is the company's own statement about its own plant.
- Are Dobinsons shock absorbers made in Australia?
- Dobinsons does not say. It states that its shock absorbers are designed and developed in-house, which describes engineering rather than a factory, and it publishes no manufacturing location for them anywhere we could find. We are not going to infer one from the springs, so this page states no country for the dampers.
- When was Dobinsons founded and by whom?
- In 1953, by Reg Dobinson, a blacksmith, as Dobinsons Welding Works in the backyard of his home in Rockhampton, Queensland. He specialised in repairing and manufacturing springs for the region. The company moved to its current Rockhampton site in 1991 and Reg retired in 1994.
- What is the difference between Dobinsons Twin Tube and IMS?
- Construction. Twin Tube is the conventional design with an inner working cylinder and an outer reserve tube. IMS is a monotube with an internal floating piston that physically separates the oil from the pressurised gas, so the two cannot mix under repeated fast cycling, which is the mechanism behind fade.
- What does the MRR shock adjust?
- Dobinsons describes the MRR as a race-derived monotube with a three-way damping adjustment system, so the owner sets the damping rather than accepting one factory tune. It only earns its price if the adjustment is actually used; an adjustable damper set wrongly performs worse than a fixed one set correctly.
- Is Dobinsons an original-equipment supplier to any car maker?
- No claim to that effect is made by Dobinsons and none is made here. It is an aftermarket manufacturer selling springs and dampers to replace or upgrade what a vehicle was built with.
- Does Dobinsons have an official distributor in the UAE?
- We could not verify one. A Dubai address appears in local directories, a regional website describes itself as the official Middle East arm, and a social account is run for this market, but the regional site would not load on any attempt and Dobinsons' own site refused our requests, so every one of those remains a claim a business makes about itself. This page names nobody rather than repeat one.
- Do I buy the spring or the shock first?
- The spring, and it is not a close call. The spring carries the vehicle and whatever is permanently bolted to it; the damper only controls how that spring behaves once it has been disturbed. No damper compensates for a spring rated for a lighter vehicle than yours.
- Is Dobinsons still a family business?
- It still carries the family name and Glen and Keith Dobinson were left as directors when Reg retired in 1994. We found no ownership statement from the company itself beyond that, and no parent group or investor of any kind, so we are describing the founding and the succession rather than asserting anything about who owns it today.
- Is Dobinsons better than the other Australian suspension brands for the UAE?
- That comparison is not something we can make from sources. No manufacturer in this category publishes a Gulf-specific test or a comparable damping figure, so any ranking would be our opinion presented as a finding. What is sourced is that Dobinsons manufactures its own springs and has done for seventy years, and that its IMS monotube is designed around keeping gas and oil separated. Decide from that rather than from a league table nobody has run.
