Bilstein shock absorbers in the UAE

Shock absorbers and suspension systems, from the inventor of the monotube gas pressure damper

Bilstein is a trademark of its owner. We are not an authorised Bilstein dealer or distributor, and nothing here is endorsed by them. The name and mark are shown to say which parts we quote and source.

The quick answer

BILSTEIN is a German damper manufacturer founded in 1873 in what is now Ennepetal, and it has been a wholly owned thyssenkrupp subsidiary since 2005. Its place in the industry rests on one thing: in the 1950s its engineers took a French discovery about gas held under sustained pressure in oil and turned it into a production process for the monotube gas pressure shock absorber, which reached a Mercedes-Benz series car in 1957. BILSTEIN publishes five divisions rather than a consumer product ladder: Performance, OE Replacement, Motorsport, Off-Road and Camper. Before you go further, check which Bilstein you are holding, because a separate company shares the surname and the town.

Original equipment

BILSTEIN names no vehicle manufacturer as a current original-equipment customer, and what it does publish is one general sentence: that its experience and expertise in original-equipment development and racing directly benefit the aftermarket. That is a claim about know-how, not a supply contract, and it names nobody. There is exactly one marque anywhere in BILSTEIN's own material, and it is history rather than a relationship: the first monotube gas pressure shock absorber went into a Mercedes-Benz series vehicle in 1957. That is a genuine and important date and it is not a statement about any car built in this century. The line you will meet elsewhere, that BILSTEIN is fitted as original equipment by Mercedes-AMG and by Porsche, is not something we could source from BILSTEIN, so it is not on this page in any form.

Where it is made

  • Germany

BILSTEIN names three German locations: Essen, Ennepetal and Mandern. Ennepetal is where the company began in 1873 and where the monotube production process was developed.

BILSTEIN names nine locations across those six countries and does not say which of them builds which article number, or which serves this region. A German company is not the same claim as a German-built damper, and BILSTEIN has not made the second claim.

Bilstein in the UAE

BILSTEIN names no UAE entity, no Gulf office and no Middle East distributor on its own site, and its published location list stops at Germany, the United States, the United Kingdom, Romania, China and Mexico. So there is nothing here for us to name. That silence matters more on this brand than on most, because the surname is shared: a business advertising itself as an authorised Bilstein distributor may be describing an arrangement with a different Bilstein company entirely, and there is no manufacturer statement to check it against either way. Ask which Bilstein, then ask to see the authorisation from that company rather than from the shop.

This page is about the damper company, not the other Bilstein

Start here, because getting this wrong wastes a trip. There are two separate automotive businesses carrying the Bilstein surname, and by a coincidence that helps nobody, both are headquartered in Ennepetal in Germany.

This page describes thyssenkrupp Bilstein: the damper manufacturer, founded in 1873, the company behind the monotube gas pressure shock absorber. That is the BILSTEIN people mean when they talk about suspension.

The other one is Ferdinand Bilstein, and the brand you will see on its boxes is febi bilstein. It is an aftermarket parts house, it is a different company, and it is not what this page is about. We are drawing the line and stopping there rather than describing it, because we did not research that business for this page, and a page that characterised a neighbouring brand from inference would be committing the exact error it is warning you about.

The practical version is two seconds long. Read the whole name on the box. If it says febi bilstein, nothing on this page applies to it. If it says BILSTEIN with a division or a B-number next to it, you are in the right place.

From window fittings to the monotube gas pressure damper

August Bilstein founded the company in 1873 in Altenvoerde, now part of Ennepetal. It made window fittings. There is nothing automotive in the origin at all, which is worth knowing mainly because it explains why the company's identity rests so completely on one later invention rather than on its age.

That invention arrived in the 1950s. A French engineer, Bourcier de Carbon, had established that gas contained in oil is bonded under sustained pressure. BILSTEIN's engineers in Ennepetal took that finding and did the harder, less glamorous part: they developed a production process for it. Turning a physical principle into something that can be built to tolerance, in volume, at a price a carmaker will pay, is a different achievement from discovering the principle, and it is the one the company is actually famous for.

The result was the monotube gas pressure shock absorber, and in 1957 it went into a Mercedes-Benz series vehicle. That date is the hinge of the whole story: not a prototype, not a race car, a production car a customer could buy.

Everything that gets said about BILSTEIN afterwards, including a great deal that gets said at parts counters, traces back to that. The company invented a way of making a particular kind of damper and has spent seventy years being the name attached to it.

Owned by thyssenkrupp since 2005, and the two dates that circulate instead

BILSTEIN's own history page states the ownership plainly: the business has been structured as a group since 1988, and has been a wholly owned thyssenkrupp subsidiary since 2005.

You will find two other dates in circulation, and both come from third-party company-data sites rather than from BILSTEIN. One gives the founding as 1954. The other gives the thyssenkrupp acquisition as 1998. Neither matches what the company publishes about itself, which is 1873 and 2005.

We are not going to reconcile them by splitting the difference or by inventing a story about an earlier partial stake, which is the tempting move and would be a fabrication dressed as diligence. First-party wins, the two other dates are noted here so a reader who meets them knows where they came from, and that is as far as the evidence goes.

The ownership matters more than most ownership facts on these pages, for one reason. A wholly owned subsidiary of a large industrial group is a stable thing to be, and it means the company behind the badge today is recognisably the company that built the reputation. That is not true of every damper name on a UAE shelf.

Five divisions, which is what BILSTEIN actually publishes

Ask BILSTEIN how its products are organised and the answer is not a good-better-best ladder. It is five divisions: Performance, OE Replacement, Motorsport, Off-Road and Camper.

Those five are worth reading as a statement about what the company thinks the real differences are, because they are not tiers stacked on top of each other. OE Replacement and Performance answer opposite questions. The first asks how the car was set up to behave and tries to restore it; the second assumes the owner wants something else. Buying up from one to the other is not an upgrade in the way buying a longer-life spark plug is, it is a decision to change the car.

Off-Road and Camper are separated out for a reason that will make immediate sense to anyone who has built a vehicle here. A camper conversion adds weight permanently, which is a load problem. Off-road use is an impact and travel problem. Those are different engineering questions and a manufacturer that ran them together would be telling you something about itself.

Motorsport sits alongside rather than above, and BILSTEIN's own framing of it is unusually concrete: the asphalt of the Nurburgring and the gravel of the Baja 1000. Its history page also records a Mercedes-Benz Monte Carlo Rally win on BILSTEIN dampers and three BILSTEIN-equipped teams on the podium at the 2012 Nurburgring twenty-four hour race. Take that as evidence the company competes seriously, which it is, and not as a specification of anything you can buy.

The B-numbers are not on this page, and this is why

Most people arriving at a Bilstein page are looking for one thing: what the difference is between B4, B6, B8, B12, B14 and B16. It is the ladder every forum thread, retailer listing and buying guide quotes, and it is genuinely how BILSTEIN organises its consumer catalogue.

It is not described on this page, and the reason is procedural rather than editorial. The two BILSTEIN pages that carry that ladder refused to load for us, returning an access error on every attempt. Bot protection on a manufacturer's own site is not something we work around. What that leaves is a set of descriptions that reached us as search-engine summaries of BILSTEIN's pages rather than as pages anybody read, and a summary of a page is not the same object as the page.

The rest of this segment holds a simple line: a claim goes on the page when someone has read it at the source. Publishing a six-rung damper ladder that nobody verified, on a page a reader would use to choose which damper to buy, would break that line at exactly the point where breaking it does the most damage. A wrong B-number is a wrong part, a wasted trip and a car that rides worse than it did before.

So the table on this page is BILSTEIN's five divisions, which we could read, and the B-ladder is a gap we are naming rather than filling. If you have been quoted a B-number, ask the shop which division it sits in and what vehicle it was catalogued against, and get the article number in writing. That answers the question properly, which a ladder printed from memory would not.

Nine sites in six countries, and what that does not tell you

BILSTEIN names nine locations. Three in Germany: Essen, Ennepetal and Mandern. Three in the United States: Hamilton in Ohio, Mooresville in North Carolina and Poway in California. One at Leicester in the United Kingdom, one at Sibiu in Romania, one at Shanghai in China and one at San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.

That is a fuller footprint than most brands in this programme publish, and it is worth having for one specific reason: it settles, without any argument, that a German company does not mean a German-built part. Three of the nine sites are American and three are on other continents again.

What the list does not do is map a site to an article number. BILSTEIN does not publish which location builds what, and it does not say which serves this part of the world. We are not going to work it out by reasoning from an address, which is guessing with a map open.

For a buyer here the consequence is small and clean. The country printed on a Bilstein carton is where that carton was filled. It is not a grade, it is not a warning sign, and it is not evidence about whether the damper inside is right for your car. The article number is.

No named customer, no named presence, and one thing we will still say

Two absences on this page are worth stating rather than leaving as gaps a reader has to notice.

BILSTEIN names no current original-equipment customer. What it publishes is a single sentence about its experience in original-equipment development and racing benefiting the aftermarket, which names nobody and promises nothing checkable. The 1957 Mercedes-Benz car is the only marque in its material and it is a historical first, not a relationship. If someone tells you a particular modern car leaves the factory on Bilstein, that may well be true and BILSTEIN has not said it, so ask them to show you where they read it.

BILSTEIN also names no UAE entity, no Gulf office and no regional distributor, and its published location list contains no Middle Eastern country. That is a fact about what the manufacturer publishes and not a claim about whether the brand reaches this market, which it plainly does.

The one thing we will say is a warning rather than a recommendation, and it is specific to this brand. Because two companies share the surname, an authorisation claim here is unusually easy to make and unusually hard to check. A shop that is an authorised distributor for one Bilstein is not thereby an authorised distributor for the other, and neither company publishes anything that lets you tell from outside. So the question to ask is not whether they are authorised. It is which Bilstein they are authorised by, and to see it in writing from that company.

Bilstein — common questions

Is Bilstein the same company as febi bilstein?
No. There are two separate automotive businesses carrying the Bilstein surname and both are based in Ennepetal in Germany. This page is about thyssenkrupp Bilstein, the damper manufacturer. febi bilstein is the brand of Ferdinand Bilstein, a different company, and it is not described here.
Who owns Bilstein?
thyssenkrupp. BILSTEIN's own history page says the business has been structured as a group since 1988 and has been a wholly owned thyssenkrupp subsidiary since 2005. You will find a 1998 acquisition date on third-party company-data sites; it does not match what the company publishes about itself.
When was Bilstein founded?
1873, in Altenvoerde, now part of Ennepetal, by August Bilstein. Its first product was window fittings rather than anything automotive. A 1954 founding date circulates on third-party sites and contradicts the company's own history page.
What is Bilstein actually famous for?
Turning the monotube gas pressure shock absorber into something that could be mass produced. In the 1950s its engineers in Ennepetal took Bourcier de Carbon's discovery that gas held in oil bonds under sustained pressure and developed a production process for it. The first monotube gas pressure damper reached a Mercedes-Benz series car in 1957.
What is the difference between B4, B6, B8, B12, B14 and B16?
This page will not tell you, and the reason is worth knowing. The BILSTEIN pages carrying that ladder refused to load for us, so everything available about it reached us as a summary of a page rather than a page anyone read. A wrong rung on that ladder is a wrong part on a car, so we are naming the gap instead of filling it from memory. Ask the shop which division the number sits in and get the article number in writing.
What are Bilstein's product divisions?
Five, and BILSTEIN publishes them on its own site: Performance, OE Replacement, Motorsport, Off-Road and Camper. They are not a good-better-best ladder. OE Replacement restores how the car was set up; Performance deliberately changes it; Off-Road, Camper and Motorsport answer different problems again.
Which Bilstein division suits a four-wheel drive used in the desert?
BILSTEIN separates Off-Road from Performance, which tells you it treats off-road duty as its own engineering problem rather than as a firmer road setting. Beyond that we are not going to recommend between the divisions on terrain we have no manufacturer testing for, and no Gulf-specific BILSTEIN data exists that we could find.
Does Bilstein supply car makers as original equipment?
It names none. All BILSTEIN publishes is that its experience in original-equipment development and racing benefits the aftermarket, which names no marque. The only manufacturer anywhere in its material is Mercedes-Benz, in 1957, as the first series car to get a monotube gas pressure damper. That is history, not a current contract.
Where are Bilstein dampers made?
BILSTEIN names nine locations in six countries: Essen, Ennepetal and Mandern in Germany, Hamilton, Mooresville and Poway in the United States, Leicester in the United Kingdom, Sibiu in Romania, Shanghai in China and San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. It does not say which site builds which article number, so a German name is not a promise of German manufacture.
Does Bilstein have a distributor in the UAE?
None that BILSTEIN names. Its published location list contains no Middle Eastern country and it names no Gulf office or regional distributor. Because two companies share the surname, an authorisation claim is unusually hard to check here, so the question to ask a shop is which Bilstein authorised them, and to see it from that company rather than from the shop.
Is Bilstein worth it over a standard replacement damper?
That depends on which question you are answering, and the divisions make it clearer than a price comparison does. If the car is standard and you want it to behave as it did when it was new, that is the OE Replacement question. If you want the car to behave differently, that is the Performance question and it is a choice about the car rather than about durability. Deciding between brands before deciding between those two is doing it in the wrong order.
What does a set of Bilstein dampers cost here?
This page carries no price. The figure swings on the vehicle, the division, whether the part is a strut or a separate damper, and which importer route it came in through, and a number written here would be quoted back long after it stopped being accurate. Tell us the vehicle and we will find out what is actually being asked.
