Autolite spark plugs in the UAE

Autolite began in 1911 as Electric Autolite, and it did not begin with spark plugs at all: it made generators to power the lamps on early buggies, at a moment when electric lighting on a vehicle was still a novelty. In 1927 it bought the Prest-O-Lite Battery Company from Union Carbide, which pushed it further into vehicle electrics.

The plug business is a later decision and it has a date. The company resolved to enter spark plug manufacturing in 1935, and the first Autolite plug came off the line at Fostoria, Ohio in 1936. Almost every other thing on this page is about who has owned that name since. The plug itself has been made under it for ninety years.

In 1961 Ford Motor Company acquired the Autolite trade name and the assets that went with it. For just over a decade a major car manufacturer owned a spark plug brand outright. Then in 1972 the United States Supreme Court ruled against Ford in an antitrust case, Ford was forced to divest, and Bendix bought the business in 1973.

This is the single most misread fact about Autolite and it is worth being blunt about the difference. Ford owning the brand is a statement about a share register and a trademark. It is not a statement that any Ford ever left a factory with an Autolite plug in it, and it certainly says nothing about what a Ford built in 2026 is fitted with. The two claims sound alike and only one of them is sourced.

The corporate line kept moving after Bendix. Electric Autolite had already merged with Mergenthaler Linotype in 1963 to form Eltra. AlliedSignal acquired Eltra in 1980. Honeywell acquired AlliedSignal in 1999. In 2011 Honeywell sold its automotive consumer products group to Rank Group, forming FRAM Group, and the brand eventually passed to First Brands Group. Six owners in fifty years is not unusual for an aftermarket badge, and it is the reason the brand's own material is often out of step with its own paperwork.

This is the part of the page most likely to be new to a reader, and it is recent enough that it should be read with its dates attached.

In September 2025 First Brands Group filed for Chapter 11 protection in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas. On 26 January 2026 First Brands announced that it would wind down its Autolite, Brake Parts Inc. and Cardone subsidiaries, having been unable to secure funding or complete a sale for them. Days later, on 29 January 2026, the company's founders were indicted over an alleged multibillion-dollar fraud involving inflated receivables and liabilities hidden from lenders. We record that because it is the context in which the brand changed hands; it is not a comment on the plugs.

The brand did not disappear. In March 2026 First Brands agreed to sell twelve brands, Autolite among them, to PGI Northstar for 25 million dollars plus the assumption of certain liabilities, subject to bankruptcy court approval. In June 2026 Premium Guard Inc. announced it had completed a second phase of that acquisition, taking filter production lines at Albion, Illinois, manufacturing equipment from a legacy plant in Greenville, Ohio, a research centre, inventory and a 730,000 square foot distribution centre at Hebron, Kentucky, which it said would be the primary hub for several strategic brands including Autolite.

So the current answer to who owns Autolite is Premium Guard Inc., a filter manufacturer headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee with production across nine countries. That is a genuinely different kind of parent from a private equity holding company, and it is very new.

When we read autolite.com on 3 September 2026, the footer still said First Brands Group LLC, with a 2025 copyright. The company named in that line had by then announced it was winding the subsidiary down and had agreed to sell the brand to somebody else.

It is easy to file that as a website maintenance detail. It is more useful than that. A consumer site running a year behind its own ownership is a signal about how much of the brand's published material is current, and it is the reason the range table on this page carries a retrieval date rather than a claim of permanence. We read seven lines in the catalogue on that date: Copper, Platinum, Double Platinum, Iridium XP, Iridium Ultra, High Thread Pro and Racing. We are not going to promise you that all seven survive a change of owner and a consolidation of plants, because nobody has published that.

The same thought applies to stock. A market like this one holds inventory for a long time, and boxes reaching a UAE counter now may well have been packed before any of the 2026 events happened. That does not make them worse plugs. It does mean that the packaging, the printed contact details and any warranty language on the box may point at a company that no longer runs the brand.

The published range reads as a fairly conventional ignition ladder: a copper base plug, single and double platinum in the middle, two iridium lines above them, a thread-specific line and a race plug. The one non-obvious member is Double Platinum, which exists because of how waste-spark ignition works. In that system a single coil fires two plugs at once, one of them on the exhaust stroke, and the wear falls differently across the two electrodes than it does in a coil-per-plug engine. Platinum on both ends is a response to that, not a marketing step up from a single-platinum plug.

There is also a name collision worth knowing before you go looking for Autolite in this market. When we searched our own UAE stock records, the nearest match to the word was not Autolite at all but Solite, which appears on a number of shops here and is a battery brand. The spelling is close enough to mislead a search, an order form or a phone call, and the two products are not even in the same part of a workshop. If you ask for Autolite and are shown a battery, that is what has happened.

One last thing the brand publishes that is easy to overlook: Autolite makes ignition wire sets as well as plugs. There is no separate category for a wire set in the way most UAE counters organise their stock, so if you need one, ask for it explicitly rather than assuming it comes up in a plug lookup.

No car maker is named as fitting Autolite at the factory. The Ford chapter is history and is written as history; nothing current is published by anybody.

No country of manufacture is named, because the brand is between owners and between plants, and a country printed here in September would be a guess by December.

And there is no supply claim of any kind. We could not source a UAE presence for the brand, and none of the shops whose stock we hold records for lists it. That is a fact about our records and about the manufacturer's silence, not a measurement of what is available in Dubai or Sharjah. If you want Autolite specifically, the workable approach is to ring a counter with the part number in hand and ask whether they can source it, rather than to assume from a page that they can or cannot.
