What Solar Gard is and who makes it
Solar Gard is the automotive film brand of Saint-Gobain, the French materials group. The company describes itself as a division of Saint-Gobain High Performance Solutions and as the group's performance films business, drawing on a glass heritage it puts at over 350 years. Its offices are in San Diego, California.
It sells in two directions. On one side is solar control window film, running from basic dyed film through metallised film to nano-ceramic. On the other is protective film for paint and windscreens, sold under the Clearshield name. Solar Gard runs separate regional sites, including one for the Middle East, each with its own dealer locator.
The window film range explained
Solar Gard organises its window film into series rather than good/better/best packages, and the series differ by the technology inside the film, not just the shade. NR is dyed film. HP is metallised, which reflects solar heat. LX and the two ceramic series absorb rather than reflect, which is why Solar Gard publishes them as signal-friendly.
One number is worth understanding before you shop. Infrared rejection figures are always higher than total solar energy rejected, because infrared is only part of the sun's energy — XenithIR is published at up to 93% infrared rejection but up to 64% TSER. TSER is the figure that reflects how much total heat the film keeps out, so compare films on that.
| Series | Technology | Published heat figures | Shades | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NR (Non-Reflective) | Dyed film | Moderate heat control; no figure published | Not published | NR Smoke Plus: 5 years |
| HP (High Performance) | Metallised — reflects solar heat | No figure published | Not published | Limited lifetime |
| LX | Multi-layer construction (named Sol-Mox on the Middle East site) | TSER 54–65% by shade; SIRR 84–86% | 25, 40, 55, 70 | Limited lifetime |
| VortexIR Ceramic | Nano-ceramic, absorbing rather than reflecting | Up to 88% infrared; TSER up to 63% | Eight, from VortexIR 5 (8% VLT) to 70 (71% VLT) | Limited lifetime, transferable |
| XenithIR Ceramic | Next-generation ceramic | Up to 93% infrared; TSER up to 64%; SIRR 91–93% | 5, 15, 30, 35, 45, 55, 70, 80 | Limited lifetime, transferable |
Clearshield: paint and windscreen film
Clearshield is Solar Gard's protective film family, and it splits into paint protection film and a separate windscreen product. All the paint films are published with non-yellowing SPF 285+ UV protection; what separates them is the topcoat and the finish.
Clearshield WPF is a different product — a clear windscreen film meant to absorb rock strikes rather than protect paint. Solar Gard publishes it as blocking 99% of UV. Its warranty is far shorter than the paint films and is mileage-linked, which is worth knowing before you assume windscreen film carries the same cover.
| Clearshield film | Finish | What distinguishes it | Warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clearshield PRO ACTIV | Gloss | Self-healing, with a hydrophobic stain-resistant topcoat | 12 years |
| Clearshield PRO HYDRO | Gloss | StainX crosslinked hydrophobic topcoat | 10 years |
| Clearshield PRO MATTE | Satin matte | Stain and contaminant resistant, matte styling | 7 years |
| Clearshield PRO | Clear gloss | Highly stretchable TPU, the entry film in the family | 7 years |
| Clearshield WPF | Clear | Windscreen film — absorbs rock strikes and road debris | 1 year / 12,000 miles |
Warranty, honestly stated
Solar Gard publishes a warranty table by product, and the durations vary a great deal. The ceramic and high-performance window films — VortexIR, XenithIR, LX, HP Charcoal, HP Quantum, HP Smoke Plus, HP Supreme, Endeavor and Galaxie — carry a limited lifetime warranty. NR Smoke Plus and Solstice carry five years. The Clearshield paint films run from seven to twelve years depending on the line.
Two points are easy to miss. 'Limited lifetime' is a warranty on the film, not a promise the film lasts forever — the VortexIR and XenithIR pages describe cover for replacement product and labour, with colour stability listed on XenithIR. And Solar Gard publishes a warranty transfer form for automotive film, so cover can move to a new owner, but that is a process, not something automatic.
The published warranty table is Solar Gard's US listing. If you are buying in the UAE, ask your dealer for the warranty document that applies to your region and your specific film, in writing, before the car goes in.
What matters in Gulf heat
Two things matter more here than in a temperate market. The first is infrared load: the sun's heat, not its brightness, is what makes a parked car unbearable, and it is why the ceramic series exist. Compare films on TSER rather than the headline infrared number, and remember that a darker shade is not automatically a cooler one — a ceramic film at a light shade can outperform a dark dyed film.
The second is signal. Metallised film such as the HP series works by reflecting solar energy, and reflective metal layers can interfere with transmissions. Solar Gard publishes its ceramic and LX films as signal-friendly, stating they do not interfere with mobile phones, GPS navigation, satellite radio or other electronics. In a car full of sensors, toll tags and connected services, that matters.
Shade is also a legal question. UAE regulations limit how dark tint may be on a private car, so confirm the permitted level before choosing — a film you cannot legally run is one you will pay to remove.
How to check you are getting genuine Solar Gard
Solar Gard film is sold through authorised dealers rather than over the counter, and the company runs a dealer locator on its Middle East site. Using it is the check worth doing: it is the difference between genuine film and a lookalike sold under a similar name.
On the day, ask for the film's series name and shade written on the invoice, not just 'ceramic tint'. Ask which warranty document applies and take a copy. If you are having Clearshield paint film fitted, confirm which line — ACTIV, HYDRO, MATTE or PRO — because the gap between the top and bottom of that family is five years of cover.
Solar Gard — common questions
- Is Solar Gard the same company as Saint-Gobain?
- Solar Gard is a division of Saint-Gobain High Performance Solutions and describes itself as the group's performance films business. Its offices are in San Diego, California.
- Which Solar Gard film rejects the most heat?
- XenithIR is the highest published of the range, at up to 93% infrared rejection and total solar energy rejection of up to 64%. VortexIR is published at up to 88% infrared and up to 63% TSER, and the LX series at 54–65% TSER depending on shade. Compare on TSER — it accounts for total solar energy, not just the infrared portion.
- Will Solar Gard ceramic tint interfere with my phone or GPS?
- Solar Gard publishes both ceramic series and the LX series as signal-friendly, stating they do not interfere with mobile phones, GPS navigation, satellite radio or other electronic devices. The metallised HP series works by reflecting solar heat, which is the construction that has historically caused signal problems.
- What does Solar Gard's limited lifetime warranty actually cover?
- On VortexIR and XenithIR, Solar Gard describes it as limited lifetime and transferable, covering replacement product and labour through its dealer network, with colour stability listed on XenithIR. It is a warranty against the film failing, not a guarantee the film lasts forever. Ask for the warranty document that applies in your region before fitting.
- Does Solar Gard make paint protection film as well as tint?
- Yes. The Clearshield PRO family covers paint: ACTIV at 12 years, HYDRO at 10 years, and MATTE and PRO at 7 years, all published with non-yellowing SPF 285+ UV protection. Clearshield WPF is a separate windscreen film, warranted for 1 year or 12,000 miles.
- Where do I buy Solar Gard in the UAE?
- Through authorised dealers. Solar Gard runs a Middle East regional site with its own dealer locator; it does not sell direct to consumers. Check any shop claiming to fit Solar Gard against that locator before booking.
