PPF warranties in the UAE: what 'registered' actually means

Every PPF shop in Dubai advertises a '10-year warranty'. Most customers never learn there are two completely different things behind those words: a manufacturer warranty registered in your name, and a shop's verbal promise. One survives the shop closing, the film failing, even selling the car. The other is worth exactly nothing. Here's how to tell which you're buying.

Key facts

  • A real PPF warranty is issued by the film manufacturer (XPEL, STEK, SunTek…) and registered in the car owner's name with the install date and roll batch.
  • A 'shop warranty' is only a promise from the installer β€” it dies if the shop closes, changes name or disputes the claim.
  • Manufacturer warranties cover yellowing, cracking, staining, delamination and bubbling β€” not stone-chip damage to the film itself (that's the film doing its job).
  • Registration is the fake-film test: grey-market and counterfeit rolls cannot be registered.
  • Premium films carry 10-year registered warranties; entry genuine films 5 years. Anything unwritten is zero.

Manufacturer warranty vs shop promise

The manufacturer warranty is a contract with the film maker: registered install, batch-traceable roll, defined coverage. If the film yellows in year four, the manufacturer supplies replacement film β€” whichever shop installs it.

The shop promise is 'don't worry habibi, ten years' β€” with nothing registered. When the film hazes, the shop blames your washing, offers a discount on redoing it, or has changed trade name. In Dubai's shop churn, that's not cynicism, it's Tuesday.

What a PPF warranty does NOT cover

Stone chips, scratches and punctures to the film aren't defects β€” the film absorbing damage is the product working. Warranties cover the film failing as a material: yellowing, hazing, cracking, adhesive staining, delamination and edge-lift from manufacturing defects.

Most warranties also require reasonable care: no pressure-washer lances at point-blank edge range, no harsh solvents. Ask for the care terms in writing at handover.

The three questions that expose a fake warranty

One: 'Register the manufacturer warranty in my name before I pay the balance β€” yes or no?' Two: 'Show me the roll's batch code you'll record on the registration.' Three: 'Email me the warranty certificate or portal confirmation.' A certified installer does all three routinely. A shop selling grey film can't do any of them β€” watch the answer become a story.

FAQs

What does a PPF warranty cover?
Film defects: yellowing, cracking, hazing, staining, delamination and bubbling. It does not cover stone chips or scratches to the film β€” absorbing those is the film's job, not a defect.
How do I check my PPF warranty is real?
Ask for the manufacturer registration in your name (certificate or portal entry) with the roll batch code. If it isn't registered with the manufacturer, you have a shop promise, not a warranty.
Does a PPF warranty transfer when I sell the car?
Registered manufacturer warranties usually transfer to the new owner, which genuinely helps resale. Shop promises don't transfer because they were never real coverage.
